Characterization of agro-industrial byproducts and wastes for sustainable industrial application

Characterization of pea processing by-product for possible food industry applications

Pea pods are by-products of the pea processing industries which are often disposed improperly but are rich reserves of nutrients. In this work, pea pod powder (PPP) was prepared and analysed for its nutritional, physical, functional and structural characteristics for food applications. Results showed that PPP contained 6.3% moisture, 5.2% ash, 3.5% crude fat, 13.3% crude protein, and 35.3% dietary fiber. Further, PPP exhibited 0.47 g/ml bulk density, 0.50 g/ml aerated bulk density, 0.62 g/ml tapped bulk density and had fair flowability as determined by Hausner's ratio and Carr's index. PPP also showed good functional characteristics with 3.24 g/g water absorption index, 7.9% water solubility index, 1.25 g/g oil absorption capacity, and 4.65% swelling power. Based on its excellent qualities, PPP was used to prepare cookies which were analyzed for its structural and spectral characteristics. The X-ray diffraction pattern of PPP and cookies revealed that the crystalline region in the latter remained intact. The FTIR spectra showed the presence of different functional groups in PPP and cookies. The study showed that PPP could be utilized as a beneficial ingredient in dietetic products such as baked goods due to its good water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity and dietary fiber content.

Ultrasensitive functionalized CeO2/ZnO nanocomposite sensor for determination of a prohibited narcotic in sports pethidine hydrochloride

The extraordinary features of cerium oxide (CeO₂) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures have encouraged substantial attention to those nanocomposites as probable electroactive complexes for sensing and biosensing purposes. In this study, an advanced novel factionalized CeO₂/ZnO nanocomposite-aluminum wire membrane sensor was designed to assess pethidine hydrochloride (PTD) in commercial injection samples. Pethidine-reineckate (PTD-RK) was formed by mixing pethidine hydrochloride and ammonium reineckate (ARK) in the presence of polymeric matrix (polyvinyl chloride) and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether as a fluidizing agent. The functionalized nanocomposite sensor displayed a fast dynamic response and wide linearity for the detection of PTD. It also revealed excellent selectivity and sensitivity, high accuracy, and precision for the determination and quantification of PTD when compared with the unmodified sensor PTD-RK. The guidelines of analytical methodology requirements were obeyed to improve the suitability and validity of the suggested potentiometric system according to several criteria. The developed potentiometric system was suitable for the determination of PTD in bulk powder and commercial products.

Novel Magnetic Nano Silica Synthesis Using Barley Husk Waste for Removing Petroleum from Polluted Water for Environmental Sustainability

Water contamination by petroleum and its byproducts presents a major challenge worldwide. It is critical that sustainable treatment methods be employed for the removal of such contaminants from polluted water. For this investigation, magnetic nano silica (M-NS) was synthesized using agricultural waste from barley husk using a two-step process that is environmentally friendly and uses green chemistry synthesis. The barley husk waste was used as a precursor for the synthesis of nano-silica following a low energy and sustainable method of acid reflux and heat treatment. Nano-silica was then used for the synthesis of M-NS, with the addition of a magnetic solution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The magnetic nano-silica particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Zeta potential analysis (ZETA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Magnetic nano-silica particles were observed to have an average diameter of 162 nm and appeared to be hydrophobic, with a large surface area of ~120 m2/gm. Due to these characteristics, magnetic nano-silica was used as an adsorbent for the removal of petrol contaminants from water. The experimental procedure showed that only 0.6 gm. of M-NS was used on 40 mg/L concentration of petroleum and the experiments recorded a high uptake efficiency of 85%. The sorption was shown to be an effective process since a high amount of petroleum was removed. The study further demonstrates that as the amount of sorbent is increased, the sorption capacity also increases until an equilibrium is reached. The results of this study establish that synthesis of M-NS, using environmentally sustainable processes, has the required characteristics to serve as sorbent for petroleum and its byproducts from contaminated water, thus enhancing environmental sustainability.

Agronomic potential of biochar prepared from brewery byproducts

This work investigated the effect of biochar produced from brewery byproducts, spent grain and surplus yeast on the physicochemical characteristics of a calcareous loam soil and plant growth of maize (Zea mays L.). Maize is a plant which needs high nitrogen fertilization, while the effect of acidic or neutral biochars on alkaline calcareous soils has only been assessed in a few studies. The effect of biochars on dry weight, as well as the level of macro- and micronutrients in soil, and above- and belowground plant tissues, were investigated, in a 30 day experiment after seedling emergence of maize (Zea mays L.), in the presence and absence of nitrogen fertilization. The results indicated that biochar from organic brewery by-products significantly increased the dry weight of the aboveground part of the plant by 59-186%, relative to the control, without the addition of inorganic N fertilization, and by 46-157% with the addition of inorganic N fertilization. The dry weight of the belowground plant tissues significantly increased by 83-92% and 46-106%, relative to the control, with or without the addition of inorganic N fertilization, respectively. Biochar addition, especially at 5% application rate individually or in a mixture, significantly increased the phosphorus content of plant tissues. The content of potassium in the plants was affected mainly by the addition of biochar derived from surplus yeast, while the concentration of calcium and magnesium in plant tissues was positively affected by spent grain biochar, in absence of inorganic nitrogen fertilization. Addition of biochars produced from brewery byproducts improved soil fertility parameters, particularly the contents of total organic carbon (by 133% and 118% with or without fertilization, respectively), total nitrogen (by 120% and 81% respectively) and available phosphorus in the studied loam calcareous soil. Overall, biochar from brewery wastes showed the potential to enhance plant growth and nutrient availability, thus it is a promising organic fertilizer for sustainable agriculture.
