Recent Advances in Preparation and Testing Methods of Engine-Based Nanolubricants: A State-of-the-Art Review

Reducing power losses in engines is considered a key parameter of their efficiency improvement. Nanotechnology, as an interface technology, is considered one of the most promising strategies for this purpose. As a consumable liquid, researchers have studied nanolubricants through the last decade as potential engine oil. Nanolubricants were shown to cause a considerable reduction in the engine frictional and thermal losses, and fuel consumption as well. Despite that, numerous drawbacks regarding the quality of the processed nanolubricants were discerned. This includes the dispersion stability of these fluids and the lack of actual engine experiments. It has been shown that the selection criteria of nanoparticles to be used as lubricant additives for internal combustion engines is considered a complex process. Many factors have to be considered to investigate and follow up with their characteristics. The selection methodology includes tribological and rheological behaviours, thermal stability, dispersion stability, as well as engine performance. Through the last decade, studies on nanolubricants related to internal combustion engines focused only on one to three of these factors, with little concern towards the other factors that would have a considerable effect on their final behaviour. In this review study, recent works concerning nanolubricants are discussed and summarized. A complete image of the designing parameters for this approach is presented, to afford an effective product as engine lubricant.

Evaluation of the nanofluid-assisted desalination through solar stills in the last decade

Remote areas and poor communities are occasionally deprived of access to freshwater. It is, therefore, critical to providing a cheap and efficient desalination system that encourages the development of those communities and benefiting society at large. Solar stills are an affordable, direct method of water desalination, but its productivity is the critical challenge hindering its application. To ease this, research has focused on the role of nanofluids to improve heat transfer. Other works have focused on improving the design in consort with utilizing the nanofluids. This review reports and discusses the substantial role of nanofluids to enhance the productivity and energy utilization efficiency of the solar stills. Specifically, the mechanism of energy transfer between the nanoparticles and the base fluid. This includes both plasmonic and thermal effects. It is evident that nanofluid utilization in small fraction enhanced the thermal conductivity compared to base fluid alone. Alumina was found to be the most suitable nanoparticle used as nanofluid inside the solar stills due to its availability and lower cost. Still, other competitors such as carbon nanostructures need to be investigated as it provides higher enhancement of thermal conductivity. Also, several aspects of energy utilization enhancement have been discussed, including innovative application techniques. The challenges of such integrated systems are addressed as well.

Efficient Stabilization of Mono and Hybrid Nanofluids

Currently; the transfer of new technologies makes it necessary to also control heat transfer in different industrial processes—both in practical and research—applications. Not so long ago water and ethylene glycol were the most frequently used media in heat transfer. However, due to their relatively low thermal conductivity, they cannot provide the fast and effective heat transfer necessary in modern equipment. To improve the heat transfer rate different additives to the base liquid are sought, e.g., nanoadditives that create mono and hybrid nanofluids with very high thermal conductivity. The number of scientific studies and publications concerning hybrid nanofluids is growing, although they still represent a small percentage of all papers on nanofluids (in 2013 it was only 0.6%, and in 2017—ca. 3%). The most important point of this paper is to discuss different ways of stabilizing nanofluids, which seems to be one of the most challenging tasks in nanofluid treatment. Other future challenges concerning mono and hybrid nanofluids are also thoroughly discussed. Moreover, a quality assessment of nanofluid preparation is also presented. Thermal conductivity models are specified as well and new representative mono and hybrid nanofluids are proposed.
