A Six-Membered Ring Molecular Sieve Achieved by a Reconstruction Route

Zeolite molecular sieves with at least eight-membered rings are widely applied in industrial applications, while zeolite crystals with six-membered rings are normally regarded as useless products due to the occupancy of the organic templates and/or inorganic cation in the micropores that could not be removed. Herein, we showed that a novel six-membered ring molecular sieve (ZJM-9) with fully open micropores could be achieved by a reconstruction route. The mixed gas breakthrough experiments such as CH₃OH/H₂O, CH₄/H₂O, CO₂/H₂O, and CO/H₂O at 25 °C showed that this molecular sieve was efficient for selective dehydration. Particularly, a lower desorption temperature (95 °C) of ZJM-9 than that (250 °C) of the commercial 3A molecular sieve might offer an opportunity for saving more energy in dehydration processes.

Adsorption and photocatalytic conversion of ethyl mercaptan to diethyl disulfide on Fe2O3-loaded HNbMoO6 nanosheet

Ethyl mercaptans which commonly exist in natural gas need to be removed due to their toxic, odorous, and corrosive properties. Herein, a novel Fe₂O₃-modified HNbMoO₆ nanosheet catalyst (Fe₂O₃@e-HNbMoO₆) was prepared by an exfoliation-impregnation method for the ethyl mercaptans removal. In the heterojunction catalyst, e-HNbMoO₆ can be excited by visible light to generate the photogenic charge and has certain adsorption property for ethyl mercaptan with hydrogen bonding (Nb-OH or Mo-OH as the hydrogen bonding donor); Fe₂O₃ plays the role of accelerating photogenerated electrons and holes, and enhancing the adsorption of ethyl mercaptan with another hydrogen bonding (Fe-OH as the hydrogen bonding donor and receptor). Results showed that the adsorption capacity of Fe₂O₃@e-HNbMoO₆ is 69.9 μmol/g for ethyl mercaptan. In addition, the photocatalytic conversion efficiency of ethyl mercaptan to diethyl disulfide is nearly 100% and it is higher than that of the other Nb-Mo based photocatalysts, such as LiNbMoO₆, Fe_1/3NbMoO₆, Ce_1/3NbMoO₆, TiO₂-HNbMoO₆, e-HNbMoO₆, CeO₂@e-HNbMoO₆, and Ag₂O@e-HNbMoO₆. Under the experimental conditions, the photocatalytic conversion efficiency is greater than the adsorption efficiency over Fe₂O₃@e-HNbMoO₆, and there is no ethyl mercaptan output in the process of adsorption and photocatalytic conversion. Fe₂O₃@e-HNbMoO₆ heterojunction catalyst has practical value and reference significance for purifying methane gas and enhancing photocatalytic conversion of ethyl mercaptan.

Adsorption isotherm models: A comprehensive and systematic review (2010-2020)

Among numerous methods developed in purification and separation industries, the adsorption process has received considerable attention due to its inexpensive, facile, and eco-friendly nature. The importance of the adsorption process causes extraordinary endeavors for modeling the adsorption isotherms during the years; thus, myriads of research have been conducted and many reviews have been published. In this paper, we have attempted to gather the most widely used adsorption isotherms and their related definitions, along with examples of correlated work of the recent decade. In the present review, 37 adsorption isotherms with about 400 references have been collected from the research published in the period of 2010-2020. The adsorption isotherms utilized are alphabetically organized for ease of access. The parameters of each isotherm, as well as the applicable definitions, are presented in the table, in addition to being discussed in the text. Another table is provided for the practical use of researchers, featuring the usage of the related isotherms in peer-reviewed studies.

Performance of molecular dynamics simulation for predicting of solvation free energy of neutral solutes in methanol

In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was applied for calculating solvation free energy of 16 solute molecules in methanol solvent. The thermodynamic integration method was used because it was possible to calculate the difference in free energy in any thermodynamic path. After comparing results for solvation free energy in different force fields, COMPASS force field was selected since it had the lowest error compared to experimental result. Group-based summation method was used to compute electrostatic and van der Waals forces at 298.15 K and 1 atm. The results of solvation free energy were obtained from molecular dynamics simulation and were compared to the results from Solvation Model Density (SMD) and Universal Continuum Solvation Model (denoted as SM8), which were obtained from other research works. Average square-root-error for molecular dynamics simulation, SMD and SM8 models were 0.096091, 0.595798, and 0.70649. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R 2) for molecular dynamics simulation was 0.9618, which shows higher accuracy of MD simulation for calculating solvation free energy comparing to two other models.

Prediction of methane diffusion coefficient in water using molecular dynamics simulation

Diffusion coefficient is one the most effective factors in mass transfer calculation, which plays an important role in study at the molecular scale. In this study, Material Studio software was used to simulate the diffusion coefficient of methane in water through molecular dynamics. COMPASS force field was also used for optimization of atomic structures of methane and water, and Group-Based method was applied to model to calculate both van der Waals and electrostatic forces. In addition, Universal force field was used to optimize of amorphous cell, while Ewald and Atom-Based methods were applied for modeling and calculation of van der Waals and electrostatic potential energy at constant temperatures. The simulation duration for equilibrium of amorphous cell in both state of NVT and NVE was assumed 5ps. The impact of temperature as well as concentration on diffusion coefficient were investigated and results showed that the diffusion coefficient had linear relationship with temperature and third-degree polynomial relationship with concentration. As a result, of the simulation, the diffusion coefficient function versus temperature and concentration was developed.
