Behavior of Anionic Surfactants and Short Chain Alcohols Mixtures in the Monolayer at the Water–Air Interface

Adsorption of PFAAs in the Vadose Zone and Implications for Long-Term Groundwater Contamination

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are persistent environmental contaminants that sorb to air-water and solid interfaces throughout the vadose zone. These sorption processes lead to decadal leaching of PFAS from the source zones to groundwater systems. While these processes are increasingly well understood, critical gaps exist in describing the vertically variable adsorption in the presence of vadose zone heterogeneity and methods for efficiently upscaling the laboratory observations to predict field-scale PFAA transport and retardation. In this work, we build upon fundamental theories and scalable relationships to define a semi-analytical framework for synthesizing and upscaling PFAA adsorption in heterogeneous vadose zone systems. Solid-phase and air-water interfacial adsorption are quantified mechanistically for several PFAAs and then applied to a contaminated site in Northern Wisconsin. The results highlight the dominance of air-water and organic carbon solid-phase adsorption processes in the vadose zone. Strong sorption heterogeneity─driven by depth-dependent adsorption mechanisms─produces complex spatially variable retardation profiles. We develop vadose zone retardation potentials to quantify this field-scale heterogeneity and propose vertical integration methods to upscale spatially resolved information for transport modeling. This work highlights the importance of accounting for multiscale and multiprocess heterogeneity for accurately describing and predicting the long-term fate and transport of PFAAs in the subsurface.

Physicochemical Studies on the Interaction between Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Methylene Blue in Methanol-Water Mixed Solvent Media

The surface activity and the process of micellization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with methylene blue (MB) in a methanol-water mixed solvent system were investigated by tensiometry and conductometry at 298.15 K. The measurements of surface tension and conductivity of SDS-MB complex were carried up to 0.3 volume fractions of methanol because the resulting complex appeared turbid above 0.3 volume fractions of methanol. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the SDS was determined from both tensiometry and conductometry. The CMC of SDS increased with the increasing volume fraction of methanol due to the inclusion of methanol in the micelles and decreased in the presence of methylene blue due to the reduction of electrostatic repulsion within the anionic moiety of SDS by the positive charge of the added dye. Different properties like surface excess concentration $\left({\mathrm{\Gamma }}_{\max }\right)$ , minimum surface area $\left(A_{\text{min}}\right)$ , Gibbs free energy of micellization $\left(\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^o\right)$ , surface pressure ( ${\pi }_{\text{CMC}}$ ), efficiency of a surfactant ( $\text{p}{C}_{20}$ ), packing parameter $\left(P\right)$ , and standard free energy interfacial adsorption $\left(\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\text{ads}}^o\right)$ of SDS in the absence/presence of MB were calculated. On the basis of $\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^o$ values, it was noticed that the increasing volume fraction of methanol disfavors the micellization of SDS, while the presence of MB increased the efficiency of SDS making the micellization process more spontaneous.

Modification of adsorption, aggregation and wetting properties of surfactants by short chain alcohols

The adsorption of methanol, ethanol and propan-1-ol at the solution-air and solid-solution interfaces, their aggregation in the aqueous media as well as wetting properties regarding their applications as additives or co-surfactants in the surfactants aqueous solution were discussed based on the literature data. Mutual influence of alcohols and surfactants on the solution-air and solid-solution interface tension was considered. For this purpose there were used different methods allowing to describe or predict changes of water surface tension as a function of alcohols concentration. These, in turn, as a function of alcohol and/or surfactant concentration were also analyzed by means of the methods applied for prediction of surface tension of aqueous solution of the classical surfactants mixture. The same considerations related to the behaviour of alcohol and surfactant at the solid-solution and solution-air interfaces were made. To explain the behaviour of alcohols and surfactants mixture at the solution-air and solid-solution interfaces the components and parameters of water, alcohols, surfactants and solids surface tension as well as the Gibbs free energy changes during the adsorption process were taken into account. It was proved that wettability of some solids can be predicted based on alcohol and surfactants adsorption as well as surface tension components and parameters. As follows the mutual influence of alcohol and surfactant on their adsorption at the solution-air and solid-solution interfaces as well as on the wetting properties at the alcohol concentration from zero to its critical aggregation concentration (CAC) is different from that at its concentration higher than CAC.

Thermodynamic properties of adsorption and micellization of n-oktyl-β-D-glucopiranoside

Measurements of the surface tension, density and viscosity of aqueous solutions of n-oktyl-β-D-glucopiranoside (OGP) were made at 293 K. From the obtained results the Gibbs surface excess concentration of OGP at the water-air interface and its critical micelle concentration were determined. The Gibbs surface excess concentration of OGP used in the Gu and Zhu isotherm equation allowed us to determine the Gibbs standard free energy of OGP adsorption at the water-air interface. The Gibbs standard free energy of OGP adsorption was also determined on the basis of the Langmuir, Szyszkowski, Gamboa and Olea equations as well the surface tension of "hydrophobic" part of OGP and "hydrophobic" part-water interface tension. It appeared that there is an agreement between the values of Gibbs standard free energy of OGP adsorption at the water-air interface determined by using all the above mentioned methods. It also proved that standard free energy of OGP micellization determined from CMC is consistent with that obtained on the basis of the free energy of the interactions between the "hydrophobic" part of the OPG through the water phase.

Effect of anionic surfactant and short-chain alcohol mixtures on adsorption at quartz/water and water/air interfaces and the wettability of quartz

Measurements of the advancing contact angles for aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDDS) or sodium hexadecyl sulfonate (SHS) in mixtures with methanol, ethanol, or propanol on a quartz surface were carried out. On the basis of the obtained results and Young and Gibbs equations the critical surface tension of quartz wetting, the composition of the surface layer at the quartz-water interface, and the activity coefficients of the anionic surfactants and alcohols in this layer as well as the work of adhesion of aqueous solutions of anionic surfactant and alcohol mixtures to the quartz surface were determined. The analysis of the contact angle data showed that the wettability of quartz changed visibly only in the range of alcohol and anionic surfactant concentration at which these surface-active agents were present in the solution in the monomeric form. The analysis also showed that there was a linear dependence between the adhesion and the surface tension of aqueous solutions of anionic surfactant and alcohol mixtures. This dependence can be described by linear equations for which the constants depend on the anionic surfactant and alcohol concentrations. The slope of all linear dependence between adhesion and surface tension was positive. The critical surface tension of quartz wetting determined from this dependence by extrapolating the adhesion tension to the value equal to the surface tension (for contact angle equal zero) depends on the assumption whether the concentration of anionic surfactant or alcohol was constant. Its average value is equal to 29.95mN/m and it is considerably lower than the quartz surface tension. The positive slope of the adhesion-surface tension curves was explained by the possibility of the presence of liquid vapor film beyond the solution drop which settled on the quartz surface and the adsorption of surface-active agents at the quartz/monolayer water film-water interface. This conclusion was confirmed by the work of adhesion of aqueous solutions of anionic surfactants and short-chain alcohol mixtures to the quartz surface determined on the basis of the contact angle data and molar fraction of anionic surfactants and alcohols and their activity coefficient in the surface layer.
