Abstract
Phase separation and aggregation behaviour of triton X-100 (TX-100) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) mixture were investigated using cloud point and UV-visible spectroscopic techniques. The effects of various hydrotropes (HYTs) - namely, sodium salicylate (SS), sodium benzoate (SB), glycerol (Glyc), and 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) - on the cloud point (CP) of TX-100 + BSA were determined. The obtained CP values for the mixed system in the presence of HYTs followed the order: The measured critical micellization concentration (CMC) values of the TX-100 + BSA mixture were found to be significantly altered with varying amounts of BSA. The calculated free energy of clouding and micellization indicated the non-spontaneous nature of the phase transition and the spontaneous association of the TX-100 + BSA mixture. The non-spontaneity of phase separation decreased with increasing concentrations of HYTs. The enumerated values of ∆Hco and ∆Sco were consistently recorded as negative and positive magnitudes, respectively, in all aqueous HYTs media. The clouding process occurred due to a combination of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The binding constant of the mixed system was determined employing the UV-vis spectroscopic method using the Benesi-Hildebrand equation.

Abstract
Dual networks formed by entangled polymer chains and wormlike surfactant micelles have attracted increasing interest in their application as thickeners in various fields since they combine the advantages of both polymer- and surfactant-based fluids. In particular, such polymer-surfactant mixtures are of great interest as novel hydraulic fracturing fluids with enhanced properties. In this study, we demonstrated the effect of the chemical composition of an uncharged polymer poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and pH on the rheological properties and structure of its mixtures with a cationic surfactant erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride already exploited in fracturing operations. Using a combination of several complementary techniques (rheometry, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, small-angle neutron scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), we showed that a small number of residual acetate groups (2-12.7 mol%) in PVA could significantly reduce the viscosity of the mixed system. This result was attributed to the incorporation of acetate groups in the corona of the micellar aggregates, decreasing the molecular packing parameter and thereby inducing the shortening of worm-like micelles. When these groups are removed by hydrolysis at a pH higher than 7, viscosity increases by five orders of magnitude due to the growth of worm-like micelles in length. The findings of this study create pathways for the development of dual semi-interpenetrating polymer-micellar networks, which are highly desired by the petroleum industry.

Abstract
The formation of aggregates between carboxylated (PVCOOH) or neutral hydrolyzed (PVOH) poly(vinyl alcohol) and hexadecylpyridinium chloride (C16PyCl) was examined by conductimetry, turbidimetry, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) in the presence of different NaCl concentrations. The interaction between the polymers and C16PyCl in pure water showed a critical aggregation concentration (cac = 0.8 mmol L-1) only for the neutral polymer. PVCOOH interacted with the surfactant through electrostatic attraction, forming macroscopic aggregates. Integral enthalpy changes for aggregate formation (ΔHagg) obtained from ITC curves varied from -0.61 (for the PVOH system in pure water) to -4.14 kJ mol-1 (for PVOH in the presence of 10.0 mmol L-1 NaCl), indicating that the formation of the aggregates was enthalpically favored. However, hydrophobic interactions drove the process for low surfactant concentration for both polymers. Saturation concentrations (C2) obtained from conductimetry were smaller than those from ITC, revealing that the binding of C16PyCl on the chain of the polymers at higher surfactant concentrations shows the same electric properties as that of free micelles on the solution. Increase of the ionic strength favored the aggregation and decreased the complexity of the ITC curves, suggesting that the reorganization of the surfactant monomers on the polymeric chain with the increase in their concentration was suppressed.

Abstract
AbstractThe diffusion kinetics of a molecular probe—rhodamine B—in ternary aqueous solutions containing poly(vinyl alcohol), glycerol, and surfactants was investigated using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. We show that the diffusion characteristics of rhodamine B in such complex systems is determined by a synergistic effect of molecular crowding and intermolecular interactions between chemical species. The presence of glycerol has no noticeable impact on rhodamine B diffusion at low concentration, but significantly slows down the diffusion of rhodamine B above 3.9% (w/v) due to a dominating steric inhibition effect. Furthermore, introducing surfactants (cationic/nonionic/anionic) to the system results in a decreased diffusion coefficient of the molecular probe. In solutions containing nonionic surfactant, this can be explained by an increased crowding effect. For ternary poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions containing cationic or anionic surfactant, surfactant—polymer and surfactant—rhodamine B interactions alongside the crowding effect of the molecules slow down the overall diffusivity of rhodamine B. The results advance our insight of molecular migration in a broad range of industrial complex formulations that incorporate multiple compounds, and highlight the importance of selecting the appropriate additives and surfactants in formulated products.

Abstract
This article presents a study of the interfacial properties of oil-in-water emulsions containing sugar esters and polysaccharides. Sucrose fatty acid esters were synthesized using immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B. A yield of 53.4% was obtained using 2-methyl-2-butanol and 1:3 M ratio of sucrose:stearic acid. Equilibrium surface tension was 45 mN/m and low critical micellar concentration (CMC) value was obtained (ca. 10 mg/mL), characteristic of non-ionic surfactant. The interfacial properties of mixtures of sucrose esters and polysaccharides, at the oil-water interface were determined using a pendant drop tensiometer. Addition of polysaccharides increased the interfacial tension. Studies of interfacial viscoelasticity showed that the films were predominantly elastic. The presence of polysaccharides in emulsions resulted in flocculated droplets. All the emulsions presented great stability along 28 days with no creaming formation.

Abstract
Alkylimidazolium salts are an important class of ionic liquids (ILs) due to their self-assembly capacity when in solution and due to their potential applications in chemistry and materials science. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the physicochemical properties of this class of ILs and their mixtures with natural polymers is highly desired. This work describes the interactions between a homologous series of mono- (CnMIMBr) and dicationic imidazolium (Cn(MIM)2Br2) ILs with cellulose ethers in aqueous medium. The effects of the alkyl chain length (n = 10, 12, 14, and 16), type, and concentration range of ILs (below and above their cmc) on the binding to methylcellulose (MC) were evaluated. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the interactions are favored by the increase of the IL hydrocarbon chain length, and that the binding of monocationic ILs to MC is driven by entropy. The monocationic ILs bind more effectively on the methoxyl group of MC when compared to dicationic ILs, and this outcome may be rationalized by considering the structural difference between the conventional (CnMIMBr) and the bolaform (Cn(MIM)2Br2) surfactant ILs. The C16MIMBr interacts more strongly with hydroxypropylcellulose when compared to methylcellulose, indicating that the strength of the interaction also depends on the hydrophobicity of the cellulose ethers. Our findings highlight that several parameters should be taken into account when designing new complex formulations.

Abstract
Interactions between the polymers and amphiphiles in aqueous solutions have generated considerable interest among researchers because of the widespread applications, relatively complex behavior and improved physicochemical properties of the mixtures. Numerous studies on the surfactant-polymer systems have been carried out in recent years and the number of scientific reports has considerably increased. Various applications of polymers in different areas and many works concerning the amphiphiles are being published every year. Usually, the mixed systems containing polymers and amphiphiles show solution properties different from those of individual solutions due to interaction between the components. The present review article mainly focuses on the behaviour of polymers in aqueous solutions, in the absence or presence of amphiphiles, such as surfactants, drugs, etc. It also summarizes effect of the nature of amphiphiles on aggregation properties of polymers in aqueous solution, and interaction of conventional as well as gemini surfactants with polymers.
