A Study on Dispersion and Antibacterial Activity of Functionalizing Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes with Mixed Surfactant

Small organic molecules act as a trigger in an "unzippering" mechanism to facilitate carbon nanotube dispersion

In binary dispersing agents system, the contribution and roles of different sized molecules to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersion remain unclear, which hinders the understanding of the environmental behaviour and risks of CNTs. This study compared the dispersion of CNTs by m-nitrobenzoic acid (NBA), trans-cinnamic acid (TCA), tannic acid (TA), and their mixtures. The dispersion efficiency of CNTs significantly reduced with the increased solid-phase concentration (Q_e) of TA due to the adsorption of TA on newly exposed CNTs surfaces. However, the CNTs dispersion efficiency by NBA or TCA was independent of Q_e because the dispersed CNTs surface was completely occupied by NBA or TCA without new exposed sites available for subsequent adsorption. The mixture of NBA or TCA with TA significantly enhanced the dispersion efficiency of CNTs, indicating a synergistic effect of CNTs dispersion. The addition of NBA or TCA decreased the hydrodynamic diameter of CNTs dispersed by TA, which indicated that NBA or TCA facilitated TA wedging into CNTs bundles for more complete separation of CNTs. This study highlighted the triggering effect of small molecules in the "unzippering" mechanism for improving the dispersing efficiency of CNTs by large molecules.

Multi-omics analyses reveal molecular mechanisms for the antagonistic toxicity of carbon nanotubes and ciprofloxacin to Escherichia coli

With the increasing production and application, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are being discharged into the environment, where they can interact with co-existing contaminants, causing complicated joint toxicity to organisms that needs to be studied. The case study of ENMs-contaminant joint toxicity and the understanding of relative mechanisms are very insufficient, particularly the mechanisms of molecular interactions and governing processes. Herein, a typical ENMs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 0-60 mg/L), and a common antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP, 0-900 mg/L), were selected as the analytes. Their joint toxicity to a model microbe Escherichia coli was specifically investigated via biochemical, transcriptomics, and metabolomics approaches. The result revealed an antagonistic effect on growth inhibition between CNTs and CIP. Mitigations in cell membrane disruption and oxidative stress were involved in the antagonistic action. CIP (48.8-244 mg/L) decreased the bioaccumulation of CNTs (7.2 mg/L) via reducing cell-surface hydrophobicity and hindering the bio-nano interaction, which could attenuate the toxicity of CNTs to bacteria. CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) alleviated the disturbance of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) to gene expressions especially related to nitrogen compound metabolism, oxidoreductase activity, and iron-sulfur protein maturation, probably through relieving the CIP-induced inhibition of DNA gyrase activity. Further, CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) offset the impact of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) on bacterial metabolome via the regulation of biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and metabolisms of some amino acids and glutathione. The findings shed new light on the molecular mechanisms by which ENMs present joint effect on contaminant toxicity, and provide important information for risk assessments of CNTs and fluoroquinolones in the environment.

The mechanisms and environmental implications of engineered nanoparticles dispersion

Dispersion of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has drawn special research attentions because the environmental behavior, risks, and applications of ENPs are greatly dependent on their dispersing status. This review summarizes the latest research progress of dispersion mechanisms, environmental applications in contaminants adsorption, and toxicity of ENPs dispersed in liquid and in solid matrix (3D-ENPs). Dispersion mechanisms of ENPs, including steric hindrance, electrostatic repulsion and "micelle wrapping" are well understood in single dispersing agent, however, the prediction of ENPs dispersion in real environments is not straightforward because of the diversity of structures, components, and properties of natural organic molecule mixtures. The adsorption characteristics, depending on the exposed surface areas in liquid, are significantly different between dispersed and aggregated ENPs. Comparing with the aggregated ENPs, the toxicity of dispersed ENPs is generally enhanced due to the increased uptake, released metal ions, carried contaminants, and induced ROS. 3D-ENPs not only inherit the excellent adsorption performance of ENPs dispersed in liquid, but also are beneficial to the separation and recycle from aqueous solutions due to their 3D rigid structures. However, the adsorption mechanisms as affected by environmental conditions are still unclear. Additionally, the potential risks of 3D-ENPs should be paid more attentions, with an emphasis on free radicals and stability of 3D structure.

Antibacterial activity of chitosan nano-composites and carbon nanotubes: A review

Bacteriological contamination of water sources is a major challenge that has a detrimental impact on both the environment and human health. This imposes the search for the most efficient disinfectant. Despite their antibacterial efficiency, traditional methods can often form disinfection byproducts through their reaction with organic and inorganic compounds. Substitutes for conventional bacterial inactivation methods should not produce harmful byproducts and must also be cost effective. Nanotechnology is an attractive option that is suited for surface reactions as nanostructures offer large surface to volume ratios. Technologies using chitosan-modified nanocomposites and carbon nanotubes have proven to offer promising alternatives for bacterial inactivation. To enhance their antibacterial efficiency, such technologies have been modified chemically and physically and have as well been associated with other treatment techniques. However, despite their high bacterial disinfection efficacy and lack of treatment byproducts, the vagueness in bacterial inactivation mechanisms and complexity in materials preparation have often obscured their wide scale application. The aim of this manuscript is to review the recent advances in bacterial disinfection using nanomaterials, in the form of chitosan and carbon nanotubes. The rapid rate of research and the notable progress in this area dictate the frequent compilation and dissemination of recent introductions to this field. Existing gaps in the literature are thus also highlighted and reported discrepancies are pinpointed so that roadmaps for future studies may be figured.
