Targeting Underlying Inflammation in Carcinoma Is Essential for the Resolution of Depressiveness

In modern clinical practice and research on behavioral changes in patients with oncological problems, there are several one-sided approaches to these problems. Strategies for early detection of behavioral changes are considered, but they must take into account the specifics of the localization and phase in the course and treatment of somatic oncological disease. Behavioral changes, in particular, may correlate with systemic proinflammatory changes. In the up-to-date literature, there are a lot of useful pointers on the relationship between carcinoma and inflammation and between depression and inflammation. This review is intended to provide an overview of these similar underlying inflammatory disturbances in both oncological disease and depression. The specificities of acute and chronic inflammation are considered as a basis for causal current and future therapies. Modern therapeutic oncology protocols may also cause transient behavioral changes, so assessment of the quality, quantity, and duration of behavioral symptoms is necessary to prescribe adequate therapy. Conversely, antidepressant properties could be used to ameliorate inflammation. We will attempt to provide some impetus and present some unconventional potential treatment targets related to inflammation. It is certain that only an integrative oncology approach is justifiable in modern patient treatment.

Fear of cancer recurrence and coping attitudes of breast cancer survivors

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to determine the fear of cancer recurrence levels and coping orientation of breast cancer survivors.

METHODS

This descriptive exploratory study was conducted using a web-based online survey. This article is written using the STROBE checklist. The study was completed with 204 women participants. Data were collected using the 'Demographic and Clinical Information Form', 'Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI)' and 'Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory-Revised (COPE-R)'.

RESULTS

FCRI total score average within the scope of the study was calculated as 42.00 ± 18.88. Women's COPE-R total score average is 80.62 ± 13.20. There was a positive correlation between FCRI total score and COPE-R (r = 0.183, p = 0.009). According to the results of multiple linear regression analysis, age, education level, CAM usage, getting psychological support and COPE-R subscales (accommodation, avoidance, self-punishment) were associated with FCRI total score.

CONCLUSIONS

The fear of cancer recurrence experienced by breast cancer survivors was associated with their coping orientation. Determining the fear of cancer recurrence level and coping orientation of breast cancer survivors by healthcare professionals will guide the reduction of women's fear of cancer recurrence and further the development of adaptive coping orientation.

Using The Cancer Genome Atlas as a Tool to Improve Undergraduate Student Understanding of Cancer Genetics and the Hallmarks of Cancer Progression

Undergraduate students harbor a number of misconceptions about the complexity of cancer. Though educational interventions have been shown to promote student learning of various aspects of this ubiquitous disease, to date no studies have evaluated undergraduate student understanding of the Hallmarks of Cancer, a set of core properties that have emerged as the defining characteristics that drive cancer development and progression. This study documents poor baseline knowledge of many fundamental aspects of cancer biology and genetics by 2nd- and 3rd-year undergraduate students, and it evaluates the efficacy of a student-centered project as a pedagogical strategy for improving student understanding of both the hallmarks of cancer and the genetic influences that drive their acquisition by cancer cells. Using genomic and transcriptomic datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas, students investigated the most common genetic aberrations associated with specific cancer types of interest and then researched the functions of these altered genes in order to link their aberrations with specific hallmark properties of cancer. A pre-/post-project assessment of student understanding of topics related to the hallmarks of cancer demonstrated the efficacy of this approach as a means of educating undergraduate students about core cancer concepts.

Complementary and Integrative Medicine in Head and Neck Cancer

Complementary/integrative medicine (CIM) is an evolving area of collaboration between oncology, patient and their beliefs, and practitioners of complementary medicine. Evidence-informed decision-making is necessary to advise patients on which treatments may be incorporated into standard of care treatments for cancer. Patients use CIM for a variety of reasons and often have unrealistic expectations of cure or disease modifications; on the other hand, there is increasing evidence that symptoms, side effects, and dysfunction related to cancer and its treatment can be ameliorated by CIM approaches to improve patient satisfaction and quality of life. Open communication between patients and providers is paramount.

The Association between the Use of Dietary Supplement and Psychological Status of Cancer Survivors in Korea: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background

Dietary supplements (DS) use is known to be common among cancer survivors. However, detailed information on the factors influencing DS use seems insufficient, including cancer-related and psychological factors.

Methods

Study subjects were 1,852 Korean adult cancer survivors recruited from cancer survivor clinic of two university-affiliated hospitals. Data were collected retrospectively through review of medical records and self-administered questionnaires. Psychological factors were assessed using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory-Short Form. Factors associated the DS use were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis after adjusting for covariates.

Results

The prevalence of long-term DS use was 15.7% in overall (17.5% in female and 11.6% in male). Female survivors were 3.14 times (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.89–5.22) more likely to use DS than male. In male cancer survivors, ever-smoking and previous radiotherapy were positively associated with DS use. In females, breast cancer survivors were 0.32 times less likely to use DS compared with stomach cancer survivors, and survivors with family history of cancer were 1.39 times more likely to use DS than those without. After adjusting for sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors, survivors with anxiety (HADS ≥8) used DS 1.38 times (95% CI, 1.01–1.91) more frequently, compared with those without anxiety.

Conclusion

Diverse factors such as female sex, cancer treatment modality, smoking history, family history and anxiety status were associated with DS use in Korean cancer survivors. Targeted strategies with consideration of these factors are needed for counseling DS use for cancer survivors.
