Fabricating modified carbon sesame straw for adsorption of acetaminophen and ibuprofen from aqueous media: isotherm and kinetic models

As acetaminophen (ACT) and ibuprofen (IBP) have serious environmental impacts, despite their widespread use in many countries, the present research examined the effectiveness of activated carbon made from straw and sesame stubble in removing ACT and IBP from water. To that end, the as-synthesized adsorbent was functionalized using zinc chloride. The maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 51.7 mg g-1 for ACT and 63.7 mg g-1 for IBP. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results showed that the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics and Langmuir isotherm fit the data obtained from this study better than the other experimental models do. Also, the adsorption reached equilibrium within 120 min, and the optimal adsorbent dose and temperature were obtained as 1.0 mg and 25 °C, respectively. The mechanisms involved in the adsorption process would include acid-base, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic forces, and π-π interaction. Reusability studies revealed that the adsorbent still preserved about 89% and 82% of the adsorption performance for ACT and IBP, respectively, after seven repeated adsorption cycles. As the findings indicated, CSS/Zn could be accepted as a hopeful adsorbent to be used in pharmaceutical treatment.

Synthesis of nanomagnetite/copper oxide/potassium carrageenan nanocomposite for the adsorption and Photo-Fenton degradation of Safranin-O: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

In the current study, a novel nanomaterial called nanomagnetite/copper oxide/potassium carrageenan nanocomposite (MKCO) was fabricated to include Fenton (nanomagnetite, NM) and Fenton-like reagent (copper oxide nanoparticles, NCO) in a matrix of potassium carrageenan biopolymer. The prepared solid materials were characterized by different physicochemical techniques, such as TGA, N2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, TEM, XRD, DRS, pHPZC, and FTIR. The prepared MKCO showed unique properties like higher specific surface area of 652.50 m2/g, pore radius of 1.19 nm, pHPZC equals 7.80, and the presence of different surface chemical functional groups. Under various application conditions, comparative experiments between Safranin-O dye (SO) adsorption and Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation were conducted. After 24 h, MKCO had a maximum adsorption capacity of 384.61 mg/g at 42 °C, while the Photo-Fenton oxidation process took only 10 min to totally decompose 93% of SO at 21 °C. Based on the higher values of correlation coefficients, Langmuir’s adsorption model is the best-fitted adsorption model for SO onto all the prepared solid materials. Studies on SO adsorption’s kinetics and thermodynamics show that it is physisorption and that it operates according to endothermic, spontaneous, and PFO model processes. While, PFO, endothermic, and non-spontaneous processes are satisfied by the catalytic decomposition of SO. After five application cycles, MKCO demonstrated good catalyst reusability with a 3.4% decrease in degrading efficiency. For lower contaminant concentrations and shorter application times, Photo-Fenton catalytic degradation of organic pollutants is more effective than adsorption.

Optimization of the raw materials of biochars for the adsorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution

In this paper, the material types were preferentially selected for different kinds of heavy metals, the effect of calcination temperatures on metal adsorption was investigated, and the adsorption mechanism was explored and summarized. The results show that the pseudo-first-order kinetic was better to fit the adsorption of heavy metals. The biomass type and pyrolysis temperature had an effect on the rate at which heavy metals were absorbed. Based on their adsorbed capacity, 350 °C pyrolyzed corn stalk char, 550 °C pyrolyzed peanut shell char, 450 °C pyrolyzed peanut shell char, 450 °C pyrolyzed peanut shell char, and 500 °C pyrolyzed wheat stalk char were shown to be the best adsorbents for Cr₂O₇^2-, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺, respectively. The largest adsorption rate were in the order of Cr⁶⁺ (Cr₂O₇^2-, 0.5380 /min) > Pb²⁺ (0.2276 /min) > Cd²⁺ (0.1354 /min) > Cu²⁺ (0.1273 /min) > Zn²⁺ (0.1000 /min), which might be positively related to the ion radius. Meanwhile, the yield of biomass decreased from 43.9% to 29.0% with the increase of pyrolysis temperature from 350 °C to 550 °C. In addition, the specific surface area and functional groups of the biochar, as well as the ionic radius and initial concentration of heavy metals affect the adsorption rate.
