A Neuropsychological Perspective on Abstract Word Representation: From Theory to Treatment of Acquired Language Disorders

Social semantics: the organization and grounding of abstract concepts

concepts, like justice and friendship, are central features of our daily lives. Traditionally, abstract concepts are distinguished from other concepts in that they cannot be directly experienced through the senses. As such, they pose a challenge for strongly embodied models of semantic representation that assume a central role for sensorimotor information. There is growing recognition, however, that it is possible for meaning to be 'grounded' via cognitive systems, including those involved in processing language and emotion. In this article, we focus on the specific proposal that social significance is a key feature in the representation of some concepts. We begin by reviewing recent evidence in favour of this proposal from the fields of psycholinguistics and neuroimaging. We then discuss the limited extent to which there is consensus about the definition of 'socialness' and propose essential next steps for research in this domain. Taking one such step, we describe preliminary data from an unprecedented large-scale rating study that can help determine how socialness is distinct from other facets of word meaning. We provide a backdrop of contemporary theories regarding semantic representation and social cognition and highlight important predictions for both brain and behaviour. Adaptation of the Aphasia Impact Questionnaire-21 into Greek: A Reliability and Validity Study

The impact of aphasia on the everyday life of Greek-speaking people with aphasia (PWA) is often underestimated by rehabilitation clinicians. This study explores the adaptation and psychometric properties of the Greek (GR) version of The Aphasia Impact Questionnaire-21 (AIQ-21-GR) to address this issue. The aim of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of the Greek version of the AIQ-21. The AIQ-21-GR was administered to 69 stroke survivors, 47 with aphasia and 22 without aphasia. The data were analyzed to determine reliability and validity. Content validity was based on the Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments guidelines. The AIQ-21-GR shows high levels of reliability and validity. The results confirmed high scores of internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.91) and indicated good known—groups validity (Mann–Whitney U = 202, p < 001). Content validity achieved high scores with an overall median score of 4 [Q25 = 4, Q75 = 5]. The psychometric properties of the AIQ-21-GR support the reliability and validity of the tool for investigating the impact of aphasia on the quality of life of Greek-speaking PWA. The AIQ-21-GR can be used for setting functional goals in collaboration with PWA and as a patient reported outcome measure for functional communication training.

Investigating the influence of semantic factors on word retrieval: Reservations, results and recommendations

There is consensus that word retrieval starts with activation of semantic representations. However, in adults without language impairment, relatively little attention has been paid to the effects of the semantic attributes of to-be-retrieved words. This paper, therefore, addresses the question of which item-inherent semantic factors influence word retrieval. Specifically, it reviews the literature on a selection of these factors: imageability, concreteness, number of semantic features, typicality, intercorrelational density, featural distinctiveness, concept distinctiveness, animacy, semantic neighbourhood density, semantic similarity, operativity, valence, and arousal. It highlights several methodological challenges in this field, and has a focus on the insights from studies with people with aphasia where the effects of these variables are more prevalent. The paper concludes that further research simultaneously examining the effects of different semantic factors that are likely to affect lexical co-activation, and the interaction of these variables, would be fruitful, as would suitably scaled computational modelling of these effects in unimpaired language processing and in language impairment. Such research would enable the refinement of theories of semantic processing and word production, and potentially have implications for diagnosis and treatment of semantic and lexical impairments.

Representation of associative and affective semantic similarity of abstract words in the lateral temporal perisylvian language regions

The examination of semantic cognition has traditionally identified word concreteness as well as valence as two of the principal dimensions in the representation of conceptual knowledge. More recently, corpus-based vector space models as well as graph-theoretical analysis of large-scale task-related behavioural responses have revolutionized our insight into how the meaning of words is structured. In this fMRI study, we apply representational similarity analysis to investigate the conceptual representation of abstract words. Brain activity patterns were related to a cued-association based graph as well as to a vector-based co-occurrence model of word meaning. Twenty-six subjects (19 females and 7 males) performed an overt repetition task during fMRI. First, we performed a searchlight classification procedure to identify regions where activity is discriminable between abstract and concrete words. These regions were left inferior frontal gyrus, the upper and lower bank of the superior temporal sulcus bilaterally, posterior middle temporal gyrus and left fusiform gyrus. Representational Similarity Analysis demonstrated that for abstract words, the similarity of activity patterns in the cortex surrounding the superior temporal sulcus bilaterally and in the left anterior superior temporal gyrus reflects the similarity in word meaning. These effects were strongest for semantic similarity derived from the cued association-based graph and for affective similarity derived from either of the two models. The latter effect was mainly driven by positive valence words. This research highlights the close neurobiological link between the information structure of abstract and affective word content and the similarity in activity pattern in the lateral and anterior temporal language system.
