Sorption of Cu2+ and Zn2+ by Natural Biomaterial: Duck Feather

Oxidized Biomass and Its Usage as Adsorbent for Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Nowadays, very coarse wool fibers are considered waste biomass and are discarded at random or burned. Therefore, it is of actual interest to valorize coarse wool fibers as utile products. In this sense, we report herein an environmentally-friendly process for the preparation of a new material based on oxidized wool fibers and designed for efficient adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater. The morphology and the structure of the obtained product were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with an X-ray energy-dispersive module (EDX) and by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Likewise, the performances of the oxidized wool fibers for the adsorption of heavy metal cations (Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺) from aqueous solutions were tested. The adsorption kinetics data were analyzed by applying the pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic models. The equilibrium of the adsorption process was investigated by using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. According to the Langmuir isotherms registered at 300 K, the maximum adsorption capacities of the oxidized wool were found to increase from Cu²⁺ (9.41 mg/g) and Cd²⁺ (10.42 mg/g) to Pb²⁺ (30.71 mg/g). Consequently, the removal efficiency of metal ions was found to vary in the range of 96.8–99.7%. The thermodynamic parameters (e.g., enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy) were calculated and discussed.

Polyurethane-Keratin Membranes: Structural Changes by Isocyanate and pH, and the Repercussion on Cr(VI) Removal

Keratin has the capacity to interact with metal ions. In order to take advantage of this potential, a novel membrane with polyurethane and keratin has been developed and studied for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. Physicochemical and morphological properties of these hybrid membranes were studied, varying synthesis parameters such as the type of isocyanate and pH in keratin solution. The effects of using diphenyl-methane-diisocyanate or toluene-diisocyanate and modifying the pH in keratin solutions were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and dynamical mechanical analysis. Results show that pH has a strong influence on morphology and on Cr(VI) removal efficiency. When pH in keratin solution is low (2.5), the protein separates from water, and a more closed cell in the membrane is obtained affecting its mechanical properties. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was also assessed at different pH values of chromium solutions. These results show that when pH of the Cr solution is acidic (at 1.5), the Cr(VI) removal percentages increase significantly, reaching up to a 58%. Thus this paper demonstrates the successful combination of synthetic and natural polymers depending on the process parameters to be applied in the critical purpose of remediation of Cr(VI) contamination.

Evaluation of native and chemically modified Sargassum glaucescens for continuous biosorption of Co(II)

In the present study, biosorption of stable cobalt was studied in an up-flow fixed-bed column using the brown alga Sargassum glaucescens treated with formaldehyde (FA) or MgCl2. Notable increase in cobalt removal was observed for FA-treated biosorbent with 2.7 and 1.4 times higher dynamic capacity (DC) and uptake capacity (UC) than native alga, respectively. Consequently, FA-treated S. glaucescens was selected for further investigations. In particle size experiments, the DCs of 0.5-1 and 1-2 mm particles were both equal to 27.6 mg/g, and corresponding UCs were 34 and 38 mg/g, respectively. The maximum DC was obtained at residence time of 2.5 min. Studying the effect of additional ions indicated partial effect of Na+ and K+ ions on DC and UC, Mg2+ reduced highly the DC and slightly the UC while heavy metal ions (Ni2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+) caused decrease in both DC and UC about 1.5-4.7 and 1.8-3.2 times, respectively. Moreover, the column regeneration studies were carried out for four sorption-desorption cycles. The DC and the UC highly decreased in the second cycle, partially decreased or remained constant in the third and in the fourth one.
