Augmenting Lagoon Process Using Reactivated Freeze-dried Biogranules

Development of a Statistical Model to Predict Methane Production from Waste Activated Sludge Co-Digested with Olive Mill Wastewater and Cattle Dung by Response Surface Methodology

Nowadays, population growth is likely to lead to a wide variety of biomass wastes generation from the diversified human, industrial, and agricultural activities. Anaerobic digestion is mostly applied to manage biomass wastes and mitigate a huge spectrum of environmental damages. This paper aims to enhance the anaerobic digestion efficiency of multicomponent substrates, using a mixture of waste activated sludge (WAS), olive mill wastewater (OMW), and cattle manure (CM). A Response Surface Methodology is employed in experimental design to determine individual and interactive effects on methane yield and chemical oxygen demand reduction. After numerical optimization using Design Expert®, the optimum values of the test factors in actual were as follows: initial pH = 8, COD/N ratio = 47, 42, CM/WAS-OMW ratio = 0.352, TS = 42.94 g/L. The obtained results indicate that anaerobic co-digestion performance could be achieved by optimising substrate composition to assure a larger microbial synergistic effect.

Changes in BNR Microbial Community in Response to Different Selection Pressure

This study investigated structural changes in microbial community of biological nutrient removal (BNR) in response to changes in substrate composition (ammonium and phosphate), redox condition, and morphological characteristics (flocs to granules), with a focus on nitrification and phosphate removal. Analyzing treatment performance and 16S rRNA phylogenetic gene sequencing data suggested that heterotrophic nitrification (HN) and autotrophic nitrification (AN) potentially happened in aerobic organic-rich (HN_AS) and aerobic organic-deficient (AN_AS) activated sludge batch reactors, respectively. However, phosphate release and uptake were not observed under alternating anaerobic/aerobic regime. Phosphate release could not be induced even when anaerobic phase was extended, although Accumulibacter existed in the inoculum (5.1% of total bacteria). Some potential HN (e.g., Thauera, Acinetobacter, Flavobacterium), AN (e.g., Nitrosomonas (3.2%) and Nitrospira), and unconventional phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) were identified. Putative HN bacteria (i.e., Thauera (29–36%) and Flavobacterium (18–25%)) were enriched in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) regardless of the granular reactor operation mode. Enrichment of HN organisms in the AGS was suspected to be mainly due to granulation, possibly due to the floc-forming ability of HN species. Thus, HN is likely to play a role in nitrogen removal in AGS reactors. This study is supposed to serve as a starting point for the investigation of the microbial communities of AS- and AGS-based BNR processes. It is recommended that the identified roles for the isolated bacteria are further investigated in future works.

Impact of Effluent from the Leachate Treatment Plant of Taman Beringin Solid Waste Transfer Station on the Quality of Jinjang River

Rapid population growth has contributed to increased solid waste generated in Malaysia. Most landfills that have reached the design capacity are now facing closure. Taman Beringin Landfill was officially closed, so the Taman Beringin Solid Waste Transfer Station was built to manage the relocation, consolidation, and transportation of solid waste to Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill. Leachates are generated as a consequence of rainwater percolation through waste and biochemical processes in waste cells. Leachate treatment is needed, as leachates cause environmental pollution and harm human health. This study investigates the impact of treated leachate discharge from a Leachate Treatment Plant (LTP) on the Jinjang River water quality. The performance of the LTP in Taman Beringin Solid Waste Transfer Station was also assessed. Leachate samples were taken at the LTP’s anoxic tank, aeration tank, secondary clarifier tank, and final discharge point, whereas river water samples were taken upstream and downstream of Jinjang River. The untreated leachate returned the following readings: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (697.50 ± 127.94 mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (2419.75 ± 1155.22 mg/L), total suspended solid (TSS) (2710.00 ± 334.79 mg/L), and ammonia (317.08 ± 35.45 mg/L). The LTP’s overall performance was satisfactory, as the final treated leachates were able to meet the standard requirements of the Environmental Quality (Control of Pollution from Solid Waste Transfer Station and Landfill) Regulation 2009. However, the LTP’s activated sludge system performance was not satisfactory, and the parameters did not meet the standard limits. The result shows a low functioning biological treatment method that could not efficiently treat the leachate. However, a subsequent step of combining the biological and chemical process (coagulation, flocculation, activated sludge system, and activated carbon adsorption) helped the treated leachate to meet the standard B requirement stipulated by the Department of Environment (DOE), i.e., to flow safely into the river. This study categorized Jinjang River as polluted, with the discharge of the LTP’s treated leachates, possibly contributing to the river pollution. However, other factors, such as the upstream sewage treatment plant and the ex-landfill downstream, may have also affected the river water quality. The LTP’s activated sludge system performance at the transfer station still requires improvement to reduce the cost of the chemical treatment.

Augmentation of Biogranules for Enhanced Performance of Full-Scale Lagoon-Based Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

This study investigated the treatment performance of lagoon-based municipal wastewater treatment plants (LWWTPs) inoculated by proprietary biogranules. Augmentation process included enhancing the microbial community of lagoon basins by weekly addition of biogranules over the treatment seasons (summer and fall). Effluent qualities before and after the augmentation process were compared, and the results were reported as "enhanced treatment efficiencies, E_E". Very low concentrations of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), total nitrogen (TN), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ammonium nitrogen (N-NH₄), and total phosphorus (TP) were detected at discharge points after the augmentation process, which corresponded to enhanced treatment efficiencies of 86, 74, 72, 92.7, and 71%, respectively. Significant reduction in total coliform and E. coli concentrations in the effluents (91 and 98%, respectively) demonstrated the capability of granule-based lagoons in destroying pathogens. Adding biogranules to lagoons was an efficient remedy for excess sludge buildup in short and long runs. Hence, inoculating lagoon plants using biogranules was suggested as an effective technique to augment rural wastewater treatment facilities.

Denitrification performance and microbial versatility in response to different selection pressures

This study investigated functional dynamics of microbial community in response to different selection pressures, with a focus on denitrification. Suspended-biomass experiments demonstrated limited aerobic and relatively higher anoxic nitrate and nitrite reduction capabilities; the highest NO₂-N and NO₃-N removal rates were 1.3 ± 0.1 and 0.74 ± 0.01 in aerobic and 1.4 ± 0.05 and 3.4 ± 0.1 mg/L.h in anoxic media, respectively. Key potential denitrifiers were identified as: (i) complete aerobic denitrifiers: Dokdonella, Flavobacterium, and Ca. Accumulibacter; (ii) complete anoxic denitrifiers: Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Arcobacter, and Comamonas; (iii) incomplete nitrite denitrifier: Diaphorobacter (aerobic/anoxic), (iv): incomplete nitrate denitrifiers: Thauera (aerobic/anoxic) and Zoogloea (strictly-aerobic). Granular biomass removed 72 mg/L NH₄-N with no NO_x^- accumulation. Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification were proposed as the principal nitrogen removal pathway in granular reactors, potentially performed by two key organisms Thuaera and Flavobacterium. Biodiversity analysis suggested that the selection pressure of nourishment condition was the decisive factor for microbial selection and nitrogen removal mechanism.
