Abstract
Anaerobic digestion has emerged as the most appealing waste management strategy in biorefineries. Particularly, recent studies have highlighted the energy advantages of waste co-digestion in industrial biorefineries and the use of two-stage systems. However, there are some concerns about moving the system from laboratory testing to industrial scale. One of them is the high level of investment that is required. Therefore, this study carried out a techno-economic analysis (scale-up and energy production, economic and risk analysis, and factorial design) to assess the feasibility of single- and two-stage systems in the treatment of cheese whey and glycerin for the production of hydrogen and methane. Scenarios (S1 to S9) considered thermophilic and mesophilic single and two-stage systems with different applied organic loading rates (OLRA). The analyses of scale-up and energy production revealed that S3 (a thermophilic single-stage system operated at high OLRA 17.3 kg-COD.m-3.d-1) and S9 (a thermophilic-mesophilic two-stage system operated at high OLRA 134.8 kg-COD.m-3.d-1 and 20.5 kg-COD.m-3.d-1, respectively) were more compact and required lower initial investment compared to other scenarios. The risk analysis performed by a Monte Carlo simulation showed low investment risks (10 and 11%) for S3 and S9, respectively, being the electricity sales price, the key determining factor to define whether the project in the baseline scenario will result in profit or loss. Lastly, the factorial design revealed that while the net present value (NPV) is positively impacted by rising inflation and electricity sales price, it is negatively impacted by rising capitalization rate. Such assessments assist in making decisions regarding which system can be fully implemented, the best market circumstances for the investment, and how market changes may favorably or unfavorably affect the NPV and the internal rate of return (IRR).

Abstract
Dark fermentative biohydrogen production (DFBHP) has potential for utilization of rice starch wastewater (RSWW) as substrate. The hydrogen production of Enterobacter aerogenes MTCC 2822 and Clostridium acetobutylicum MTCC 11274, in pure culture and co-culture modes, was evaluated. The experiments were performed in a 2 L bioreactor, for a batch time of 120 h. The co-culture system resulted in highest cumulative hydrogen (1.13 L H2/L media) and highest yield (1.67 mol H2/mol glucose). Two parameters were optimized through response surface methodology (RSM)-substrate concentration (3.0-5.0 g/L) and initial pH (5.5-7.5), in a three-level factorial design. A total of 11 runs were performed in duplicate, which revealed that 4.0 g/L substrate concentration and 6.5 initial pH were optimal in producing hydrogen. The metabolites produced were acetic, butyric, propionic, lactic and isobutyric acids. The volumetric H2 productions, without and with pH adjustments, were 1.24 L H2/L media and 1.45 L H2/L media, respectively.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to develop a sustainable process for hydrogen production by implementing nanotechnology in combination with consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) approach from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB). Peroxidase mimicking CeFe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs, 4.0 g/L) were applied for degradation of lignin from raw corn cob (CC) biomass for generation of cellulose-hemicellulose fractions amenable towards Clostridium cellulovorans during fermentation process. NP-treated biomass exhibited 43.26 % lignin removal from raw CC which was further employed for hydrogen fermentation by C. cellulovorans through CBP method. The strain yielded maximum 78.45 mL of cumulative hydrogen with hydrogen production rate of 1.55 mL/h using NP-treated CC. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on enhanced hydrogen production using NP-treated CC biomass in single pot fermentation which can prove to be a simpler, easier, and more economical process.

Abstract
The goal of this research was to study the role of excess charges in regulating biohydrogen production from Paulownia. The excess charges were generated through charge compensation in SnO2 nanocatalysts by Zn doping. The maximum hydrogen yield of 335 mL was observed at 8%Zn doping with a concentration of 150 mg/L, 47% higher as compared to standard sample. It was observed that the hydrogen production rate increased with Zn doping and the highest value (77 mL/h) was observed for 8%Zn at 24 h. The decrease in the total amount of byproducts (2.52 g/L from 4.28 g/L) at 8% Zn indicates an increase in bacterial metabolism. The lowest value of oxidation-reduction potential (-525 mV) at 24 h for 8%Zn confirms that Zn doping provides excessive electrons to the fermentative medium which helps the bacteria to transfer electrons faster during the redox reaction, hence, enhancing the enzymatic process and eventually hydrogen production.

Abstract
In the scenario of alarming increase in greenhouse and toxic gas emissions from the burning of conventional fuels, it is high time that the population drifts towards alternative fuel usage to obviate pollution. Hydrogen is an environment-friendly biofuel with high energy content. Several production methods exist to produce hydrogen, but the least energy intensive processes are the fermentative biohydrogen techniques. Dark fermentative biohydrogen production (DFBHP) is a value-added, less energy-consuming process to generate biohydrogen. In this process, biohydrogen can be produced from sugars as well as complex substrates that are generally considered as organic waste. Yet, the process is constrained by many factors such as low hydrogen yield, incomplete conversion of substrates, accumulation of volatile fatty acids which lead to the drop of the system pH resulting in hindered growth and hydrogen production by the bacteria. To circumvent these drawbacks, researchers have come up with several strategies that improve the yield of DFBHP process. These strategies can be classified as preliminary methodologies concerned with the process optimization and the latter that deals with pretreatment of substrate and seed sludge, bioaugmentation, co-culture of bacteria, supplementation of additives, bioreactor design considerations, metabolic engineering, nanotechnology, immobilization of bacteria, etc. This review sums up some of the improvement techniques that profoundly enhance the biohydrogen productivity in a DFBHP process.

Abstract
The present work describes the utilisation of cheese whey to produce biohydrogen by sequential dark-photo fermentation. In first stage, cheese whey was fermented by Enterobacter aerogenes 2822 cells in a 2 L double-walled cylindrical bioreactor to produce hydrogen/organic acids giving maximum biohydrogen yield and cumulative hydrogen of 2.43 ± 0.12 mol mol-1 lactose and 3270 ± 143.5 mL at cheese whey concentration of 105 mM lactose L-1. The soluble metabolites of dark fermentation when utilised as carbon source for photo fermentation by Rhodobacter sphaeroides O.U.001, the yield, and cumulative hydrogen was increased to 4.22 ± 0.20 mol mol-1 VFA and 3800 ± 170 mL, respectively. Meanwhile, an overall COD removal of about 38.08% was also achieved. The overall biohydrogen yield was increased from 2.43 (dark fermentation) to 6.65 ± 0.25 mol mol-1 lactose. Similarly, the modelling for biohydrogen production in bioreactor was done using modified Gompertz equation and Leudeking-Piret model, which gave adequate simulated fitting with the experimental values. The carbon material balance showed that acetic acid, lactic acid, and CO2 along with microbial biomass were the main by-products of dark fermentation and comprised more than 75% of carbon consumed.

Abstract
Marine alkaline protease (MAP) fermentation is a complex multivariable, multi-coupled, and nonlinear process. Some unmeasured parameters will affect the quality of protease. Aiming at the problem that some parameters are difficult to be detected online, a soft sensing modeling method based on improved Krill Herd algorithm RBF neural network (LKH-RBFNN) is proposed in this paper. Based on the multi-parameter RBFNN model, the adaptive RBF neural network algorithm and control law are used to approximate the unknown parameters. The adaptive Levy flight strategy is used to improve the traditional Krill Herd algorithm, improve the global search ability of the algorithm, and avoid falling into local optimization. At the same time, the location update formula of Krill Herd algorithm is improved by using the calculation methods of similarity and agglomeration degree, and the parameters of adaptive RBFNN are optimized to improve its over correction and large amount of calculation. Finally, the soft sensing prediction model of bacterial concentration and relative active enzyme in map process based on LKH-RBFNN is established. The root mean square error and maximum absolute error of this model are 0.938 and 0.569, respectively, which are less than KH-RBFNN and PSO-RBFNN prediction models. It proves that the prediction error of LKH-RBFNN model is smaller and can meet the needs of online prediction of key parameters of map fermentation.

Abstract
Concerns about fossil fuel depletion and the environmental effects of greenhouse gas emissions have led to widespread fermentation-based production of bioethanol from corn starch or sugarcane. However, competition for arable land with food production has led to the extensive investigation of lignocellulosic sources and waste products of the food industry as alternative sources of fermentable sugars. In particular, whey, a lactose-rich, inexpensive byproduct of dairy production, is available in stable, high quantities worldwide. This review summarizes strategies and specific factors essential for efficient lactose/whey fermentation to ethanol. In particular, we cover the most commonly used strains and approaches for developing high-performance strains that tolerate fermentation conditions. The relevant genes and regulatory systems controlling lactose utilization and sources of new genes are also discussed in detail. Moreover, this review covers the optimal conditions, various feedstocks that can be coupled with whey substrates, and enzyme supplements for increasing efficiency and yield. In addition to the historical advances in bioethanol production from whey, this review explores the future of yeast-based fermentation of lactose or whey products for beverage or fuel ethanol as a fertile research area for advanced, environmentally friendly uses of industrial waste products.

Abstract
The dairy industry generates excessive amounts of waste and by-products while it gives a wide range of dairy products. Alternative biotechnological uses of these wastes need to be determined to aerobic and anaerobic treatment systems due to their high chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels and rich nutrient (lactose, protein and fat) contents. This work presents a critical review on the fermentation-engineering aspects based on defining the effective use of dairy effluents in the production of various microbial products such as biofuel, enzyme, organic acid, polymer, biomass production, etc. In addition to microbial processes, techno-economic analyses to the integration of some microbial products into the biorefinery and feasibility of the related processes have been presented. Overall, the inclusion of dairy wastes into the designed microbial processes seems also promising for commercial approaches. Especially the digestion of dairy wastes with cow manure and/or different substrates will provide a positive net present value (NPV) and a payback period (PBP) less than 10 years to the plant in terms of biogas production.

Abstract
The kinetic properties of the hydrogen yield of photosynthetic bacteria were investigated using Han-Levenspiel and modified Gompertz models to determine the effects of different zinc salts on the growth and hydrogen production of the photosynthetic bacterium HAU-M1. Inorganic zinc salts (zinc standard solution and zinc sulfate) inhibited bacterial growth by 1-4-fold higher than organic zinc salts (zinc lactate and zinc gluconate). Among these four zinc salts, 5 mg/L zinc lactate displayed the weakest inhibition performance. This compound increased cumulative hydrogen production by approximately 57.81% (80.44 mL/g) and maximum hydrogen production rate by 58.27% (3.43 mL/[g·h]). The Han-Levenspiel model with parameters m > n > 0 indicated that the addition of zinc salts influenced the hydrogen production process of the bacterium in a noncompetitive manner. Compared with the inorganic zinc, the organic zinc salts were more suitable as exogenous zinc supplements to promote bacterial growth and its hydrogen production.
