The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Suicide Trends in Pretoria, South Africa

ABSTRACT

Suicide is one of the worldwide leading causes of unnatural death. Pretoria is a capital city of South Africa and is the fourth most populated city in South Africa. Between 16 and 22 suicide cases are recorded daily in South Africa.Case files from the Pretoria Medico-Legal Laboratory were reviewed between 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2021, which spanned the COVID-19 pandemic. All cases of possible and probable suicides were included. One-way analysis of variance and Pearson chi2 tests were conducted to determine statistical significance in the observed trends.A total of 1820 possible and probable suicide cases were identified. The year following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic accounted for the largest number of suicides. White males were the most heavily represented population, followed by Black males. Hanging was the most common method for males, whereas poisoning via ingestion and/or overdose was more commonly used by females.Suicides in Pretoria have increased since previous studies from 9.74% and 10.2% to 13.32%. Methods used have changed among various population groups over the past two decades. This paper examined changes in suicide trends in Pretoria compared to previous studies and highlighted correlations between suicide trends and COVID-19 lockdown measures.

Psychological and socio-ecological correlates of 12-month suicide behavior among junior high school students in the greater Accra region of Ghana

AIM

In Ghana, we know little about the epidemiology of suicide ideation, plan and attempts among junior high school (JHS) students in Ghana including the years preceding high school. This study explores the onset, characteristics, and recent patterns of 12-month suicide behavior among Ghanaian junior high school (JHS) students.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Paper-based surveys were administered to a sample (n = 800) of junior high school students in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Self-reported measures on suicide ideation, plan and attempt as well as several psychological and psychosocial factors related to mental health, substance use, poverty, sexual behavior, interpersonal relationships, and family structure were employed. Bi-variate, multivariate and logistic regression analyses were performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 25).

RESULTS

This study found that 1 out of 5 adolescents have experienced suicide ideation in the last 12 months. Girls had significantly higher 12-month (χ2 = 3.5, p < 0.05) suicide ideation rates than boys. More importantly, the study found stress significantly increasing the odds of suicide behaviors in the last 12 months (β = 1.14; CI = 1.05-1.24, p < 0.05) and parental support significantly reducing the odds of suicide behaviors in the last 12 months (β = 0.86; CI = 0.81-0.91, p < 0.05). Additionally, we found significant associations between sexual intercourse, dating, hunger, substance use, suicide stigma and suicide behaviors.

CONCLUSION

This finding highlights a potential emerging suicide crisis among preteens which warrants attention. Additional studies are needed to observe these increasing trends and identify risk, protective and precipitating factors to help prevent suicide among these children.

Analysis of Socio-Demographic Profiles of Suicidal Hanging Cases to Formulate a Preventive Strategy: An Autopsy-Based Study Conducted at a Tertiary Care Hospital in the North-East Region of India

Introduction Hanging is a common method of suicide in India and worldwide. Analyzing the socio-demographic characteristics to formulate a preventive strategy to reduce the incidence of suicide by hanging is often considered a low-cost but effective intervention for developing countries like India. The present study reports on preventive measures based on socio-demographic data of suicidal hanging cases brought for autopsy in a city in Northeast India. There is no scientific literature originating from the Northeast region of India that stresses on the preventive aspect of suicidal hanging cases to date.  Methods This is an observational study based on retrospective data. Data related to socio-demographic characteristics were collected from all the suicidal hanging cases reported for medicolegal autopsy at a tertiary care hospital in Dibrugarh, a city in Northeast India, from June 2012 to June 2013.  Results A total of 1241 cases were brought for autopsy, out of which 70 (5.64%) cases were determined to be death due to suicidal hanging. Male victims accounted for the majority of the cases, and most victims were in their third decade of life. Additionally, various other factors, such as marital status, occupational status, place of occurrence, psychiatric history, pregnancy status, and selection of suspension point, were studied. Conclusion Socio-demographic data generated from various research studies can play a crucial role in the early identification of vulnerable individuals and enable the prompt delivery of mental health services and other measures of interventions. Implementing policy-based strategies, such as restricting access to means and materials used in hanging, can have a positive impact on overall outcomes. Additionally, involving electronic or print media to de-popularize hanging as a clean and painless method proves to be another effective intervention.
