Turning Waste into Beneficial Resource: Implication of Ageratum conyzoides L. in Sustainable Agriculture, Environment and Biopharma Sectors

Seasonal and circadian evaluation of Ageratum conyzoides essential oil and its nematicidal activity against Caenorhabditis elegans

The aim of this study was to evaluate the circadian and seasonal variation of Ageratum conyzoides essential oil (EO) and its nematicidal effect on the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model for parasitic helminths. For the seasonal study, the plants were collected from January to December 2022, at 6 a.m., and to assess the circadian rhythm, the plants were collected in April (rainy season) and October (dry season), at 6, 9, 12 a.m. and 3 and 6 p.m. The fresh plants were then subjected to hydrodistillation, and their chemical composition was analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The motility test with C. elegans was carried out. The primary constituent of the oils was precocene I (65.97 to 78.42 %, respectively), followed by E-caryophyllene (6.04 to 12.16 %), comprising an average of 79.87 % of the composition throughout the year. The average yields of EOs were slightly higher in the rainy season, at 0.68 %, compared to the dry season, at 0.62 %. High light hours in the rainy season (12 a.m., 0.96 %) and in the dry season (9 a.m., 0.88 %) seem to contribute to higher daily oil yields. It was observed that the variation between the main constituents of A. conyzoides occurs in inverse proportion when analyzing the main classes of compounds present in the oils: chromenes (CH) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (SH). And that the month of March had the highest content of E-caryophyllene (12.16 %) when compared to the other months of the year. On the other hand, January and December had the lowest levels of precocene I (65.97 and 66.85 %). The IC50 of the EO of A. conyzoides varied according to the month and time of collection. The EO obtained in January was the most effective against C. elegans, with an IC50 of 0.01 mg/mL. Thus, A. conyzoides EO could be an alternative for nematode control, exhibiting greater efficacy if extracted during specific seasonal periods.

Ecology, Biology, Environmental Impacts, and Management of an Agro-Environmental Weed Ageratum conyzoides

Ageratum conyzoides L. (Billy goat weed; Asteraceae) is an annual herbaceous plant of American origin with a pantropical distribution. The plant has unique biological attributes and a raft of miscellaneous chemical compounds that render it a pharmacologically important herb. Despite its high medicinal value, the constant spread of the weed is noticeable and alarming. In many countries, the weed has severely invaded the natural, urban, and agroecosystems, thus presenting management challenges to natural resource professionals and farmers. Its interference with agricultural crops, grassland forbs, forest ground flora, and its ability to replace native plant species are of serious concern. Therefore, it is pertinent to monitor its continuous spread, its entry into new geographic regions, the extent of its impact, and the associated evolutionary changes. While management strategies should be improvised to control its spread and reduce its adverse impacts, the possible utilization of this noxious weed for pharmacological and agronomic purposes should also be explored. The objective of this review is to provide a detailed account of the global distribution, biological activities, ecological and environmental impacts, and strategies for the management of the agro-environmental weed A. conyzoides.

Essential oil Ageratum conyzoides chemotypes and anti-tick activities

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus represents a significant obstacle to animal productivity in tropical and subtropical areas, leading to considerable economic losses for the dairy and meat production industries. Essential oils (EO) extracted from Ageratum conyzoides are known to cause death and induce morphogenetic abnormalities in several insect species. This plant, however, presents morphological flower variations, which range from white to purple, associated to different chemotypes. In this context, this study aimed to conduct a novel assessment on the effects of EO extracted from two A. conyzoides chemotypes in the control of the bovine tick R. microplus. The primary constituents of the oil obtained from white flower samples (WFs) were precocene I (80.4 %) and (E)-caryophyllene (14.8 %), while purple flower oil samples (PFs) contained predominantly β-acoradiene (12.9 %), γ-amorphene (12.3 %), α-pinene (9.9 %), bicyclogermacrene (8.9 %), α-santalene (8.7 %), and andro encecalinol (5.6 %). Interestingly, only the EO chemotype from A. conyzoides PFs displayed acaricidal activity towards R. microplus larvae, with an LC₅₀ of 1.49 mg/mL.

HPLC-DAD Analysis, Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Properties of Aromatic Herb Melissa officinalis L., Aerial Parts Extracts

In order to enhance natural products value, Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) aerial part (leaves) has been studied in this work. Hence, the objective of this study is to determine the chemical composition of the studied plant polyphenols extracts using HPLC/DAD, as well as evaluate their flavonoid extracts' antioxidant and antimicrobial activities using DPPH• and disk diffusion methods, respectively. The results of phenols chemical composition showed the existence of two phenolic acids, five flavonic aglycones and six heterosides, while the biologic results of the plant flavonoid extracts exhibited the existence of a good antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

Therapeutic effects of aqueous extract of bioactive active component of Ageratum conyzoides on the ovarian-uterine and hypophysis-gonadal axis in rat with polycystic ovary syndrome: Histomorphometric evaluation and biochemical assessment

Background

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder, affecting women of reproductive age. Ageratum conyzoïdes (AGC) is used traditionally in the treatment of fever, rheumatism, and ulcer. This study investigates the effects of AGC on ovarian-uterine in PCOS rats.

Methods

Female rats were randomized into four groups (n = 6). Group A control received 2 ml distilled water. Group B received a single dose of 4 mg/kg body weight (bwt) i.p estradiol valerate (EV). Group C received 500 mg/kg bwt AGC and group D received a single dose of 4 mg/kg bwt i.p EV followed by 500 mg/kg bwt AGC orally for 30 days. Parameters tested include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-18 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- α, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), total protein (TP), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and ovary and uterus histomorphometric.

Results

Ageratum conyzoides decrease insulin resistance, obesity indices, TC, TG, LDL, MDA, T, LH, FSH, CRP, IL-6, IL-18, and TNF- α in PCOS rats. And increase HDL, E2, P, TP, CAT, and SOD in PCOS rats. AGC improved ovary and uterus histo-architecture, tertiary, and Graafian follicles, corpus luteum and endometrial thickness increased,and cystic and atretic follicles decreased.

Conclusion

Ageratum conyzoides improved insulin sensitivity, antioxidant activities, hormonal imbalance, inflammatory makers, and histological changes in PCOS rats. Therefore AGC can be used as a potential adjuvant agent in the treatment of PCOS.

The response regularity of biohydrogen production by anthracite H2-producing bacteria consortium to six conventional veterinary antibiotics

The impact of antibiotics on H₂-producing bacteria must be considered in the industrialization of biological H₂ production using livestock manure as raw resources. However, whether antibiotics that may be contained in excreta will threaten the safety of biohydrogen production needs to be researched. This study explored the impact characteristics and mechanism of six single antibiotics and three groups of compound antibiotics on H₂ production. Experiments confirmed that most antibiotics have different degrees of H₂ production inhibition, while some antibiotics, which like Penicillin G, Streptomycin Sulfate, and their compound antibiotics, could promote the growth of Ethanoligenens sp. and improve H₂ yield on the contrary. Comprehensive analysis shows that the main inhibitory mechanisms were: (1) board-spectrum inhibition, (2) partial inhibition, (3) H₂ consumption enhancement; and the enhancement mechanisms were: (1) enhance the growth of H₂-producing bacteria, (2) enhanced starch hydrolysis, (3) inhibitory H₂ consumption or release of acid inhibition. Meanwhile, experiment found that the effect of antibiotics on H₂ producing was not only related to type, but also to dosage. Even one kind of antibiotic may have completely opposite effects on H₂-producing bacteria under different dosage conditions. Inhibition of H₂ yield was highest with Levofloxacin at 6.15 mg/L, gas production was reduced by 88.77%; and enhancement of H₂ yield was highest with Penicillin G at 7.20 mg/L, the gas production increased by 72.90%. In the selection of raw material, the type and content of antibiotics demand a detailed investigation and analysis to ensure that the sustainability of H₂ yield.
