Abstract
The effects of substituting electron withdrawing and electron donating functional groups on the electronic and optical properties of angular naphthodithiophene (aNDT) were studied. Substitutions were made to the aNDT molecule at position 2 and 7, respectively. The computed ionization parameters and reorganisation energies distinguished between the p-type and n-type semiconducting natures of the unsubstituted aNDT molecule and those with the -C2H5, -OCH3, -NO2, and -CN substituents. However, the aNDT molecule with C2H5 as a substitution showed p-type behaviour since it had the largest electron reorganisation energy of about 0.37 eV. The ambipolar semiconducting property of methoxy [-OCH3-] substituted aNDT molecule was revealed from the RMSD value of 0.03 Å for both positive and negative charges with respect to neutral geometry. The absorption spectra differ significantly from those of unsubstituted aNDT, which reveals the impact of functional group substitution that changes the energy level of the molecules. The maximum absorption (λmax) and oscillator strength (f) at the excited states in vacuum was investigated using time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The aNDT with electron withdrawing group [-NO2] substitution has a maximum absorption wavelength of 408 nm. Studying the intermolecular interactions between aNDT molecules was also accomplished with the help of Hirshfeld surface analysis. The current work provides insight into the development of novel organic semiconductors.

Abstract
This work reports on the density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TD-DFT) study of the structural, electronic, and charge transport properties of 2-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl) phenol (MODP) and some of its transition M2+ complexes (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pd, Pt). Reorganization energy, integral charge transfer, mobility, open circuit voltage, and electronic properties of these compounds have been calculated by employing the global hybrid functional PBE0 in conjunction with the Karlsruhe basis set def2-TZVP. Results show that MODP and its transition metal complexes are good electron donors for organic solar cells (OSC) owing to their relatively higher HOMO and LUMO energies compared to the prototypical (6, 6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Energy gaps ranging between 2.502 and 4.455 eV, energy driving forces (∆EL-L) ranging between 2.08 and 2.44 eV, and large open circuit voltages (
) ranging from 1.12 to 2.05 eV were obtained. The results also revealed that MODP and its Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes could serve as ambipolar charge transport materials owing to their very small reorganization energies, integral charge transfers, high rate charge transfers, and mobilities. All studied molecules showed OSC donor and hole/electron transport characteristics required by organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Based on these results, new ways for designing charge transport materials for OLEDs as well as donor materials in OSCs are proposed.

Theoretical investigations on charge transport properties of tetrabenzo[a,d,j,m]coronene derivatives using different density functional theory functionals (B3LYP, M06-2X, and wB97XD). Abstract
Charge transport rate is one of the key parameters determining the performance of organic electronic devices. Based on density functional theory, exchange-correlation functionals which adequately account for non-covalent interactions, such as M06-2X and wB97XD, should significantly improve the accuracy of charge transport rate calculations for large systems with non-covalent interactions. In this work, the B3LYP hybrid functional, the variant hybrid functional M06-2X, and the long-range-corrected wB97XD functional were used to perform geometry optimizations and charge transport rate calculations on 11 variants of tetrabenzo[ a,d,j,m]coronene, including tetrabenzo[ a,d,j,m]coronene itself and its tetra-substituted and octa-substituted derivatives. Our results indicate that the molecular geometries of these benzocoronene semiconductors are large quasi-planar conjugated π systems, and the incorporation of different substituents significantly affects their frontier molecular orbitals. The hole carrier mobility ( µ+) and electron carrier mobility ( µ−) of the methoxy-substituted derivatives (TBC(OCH3)4and TBC(OCH3)8) were relatively low. The results of the tetrabenzo[ a,d,j,m]coronene molecules studied were consistent with using the aforementioned M06-2X, wB97XD, and B3LYP methods. We found that the octa-substituted derivatives (TBCF8, TBCCl8, TBC(CH3)8, and TBC(CN)8) could be used as p-type organic semiconductor materials.
