On the position of La, Lu, Ac and Lr in the periodic table: a perspective

Ligand-free supermolecules: [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4- as multiple-bonded Zintl-ion clusters based on Pd@Ge9 and Pd@Sn9 assembled units

Understanding intercluster bonding interactions is important in the rational synthesis of building blocks for molecular materials. Such characteristics have been developed for coinage metal clusters resembling single-, double-, and triple-bonded species, coined as supermolecules. Herein, we extend such an approach for understanding main-group clusters, thus evaluating [Pd2@E18]4- clusters (E = Ge, Sn) involving the fusion of parent spherical aromatic [Pd@E12]2- building units. Our results indicate intercluster bonding provided by contribution from 2P and 1G shells centered at each building motif, leading to an overall bond order of 2.70 and 2.31 for [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4-, respectively. In addition, 119Sn-NMR patterns were evaluated to complement the experimental characterization of a single peak owing to the insolution fluxional behavior of [Pd2@Sn18]4- as three peaks owing to the three sets of unique Sn atoms within the structure. Magnetic response properties revealed that spherical aromatic characteristics from parent [Pd@E12]2- building units are retained in the overall [Pd2@E18]4- oblate cluster as two spherical aromatic units. Hence, the notion of superatomic molecules is extended to Zintl-ion clusters, favoring further rationalization for the fabrication of cluster-assembled solids.

Theoretical study on structural evolution, photoelectron and vibrational spectra, and thermochemistry properties of neutral, anionic and di-anionic titanium-doped tin (TiSnn0/-/2- (n = 4-17)) nanoalloy clusters

The structural evolution, chemical stability, electronic and vibrational properties, as well as charge transfer and bonding character of TiSnn0/-/2- (n = 4-17) clusters have been performed with density functional theory calculations using ABCluster search technique. Structurally, it is found that the growth patterns prefer three kinds of absorbed stages from polygonal bipyramidal configuration for n = 4-6, to absorbing additional Sn on the adjacent surfaces of pentagonal bipyramid unit from n = 7-12, and finally to the TiSn130/-/2- cluster as the first foundational architectures, of which the encapsulated cage structure is formed when n = 11. The simulated PES spectra agree with available experiments. More interestingly, the neutral TiSn16 cluster not only possesses the high thermodynamic and relative stability but also preferable photochemical reactivity, that can be further explained by superatom features and delocalized multi-center bonds (AdNDP), while the strong p-d hybridization between Ti atom and Sn unit plays an important role in the stabilities of clusters, making it as the most suitable building units. In addition, the UV-Vis absorption spectra of TiSn16 are discussed, and the main transitions of crucial excited states are analyzed in detail. The Infrared and Raman vibrational characteristic peaks of all these neutral and charged species are properly assigned, of which the TiSnn0/-/2- (n = 10-17) clusters possess degenerating deformation mode of Ti atom wagging in Sn cage framework (Infrared active) and breathing mode of Sn cage framework (Raman active). All these findings will provide a further understanding for the nanoalloy cluster as the most suitable building block with further development as a potential optoelectronic material.

Actinium coordination chemistry: A density functional theory study with monodentate and bidentate ligands

In the current study, the coordination chemistry of nine-coordinate Ac(III) complexes with 35 monodentate and bidentate ligands was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) in terms of their geometries, charges, reaction energies, and bonding interactions. The energy decomposition analysis with naturals orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) were employed as analysis methods. Trivalent Ac exhibits the highest affinities toward hard acids (such as charged oxophilic donors, fluoride), so its classification as a hard acid is justified. Natural population analysis quantified the involvement of 5f orbitals on Ac to be about 30% of total valence electron natural configuration indicating that Ac is a member of the actinide series. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to study the pairwise correlations among the bond lengths, ΔG reaction energies, charges on Ac and donor atoms, and data from EDA-NOCV and QTAIM. Strong correlations and anticorrelations were found between Voronoi charges on donor atoms with ΔG, EDA-NOCV interaction energies and QTAIM bond critical point densities.

Assessment of the Second-Ionization Potential of Lawrencium: Investigating the End of the Actinide Series with a One-Atom-at-a-Time Gas-Phase Ion Chemistry Technique

Experiments were performed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88-Inch Cyclotron facility to investigate the electron-transfer reduction reaction of dipositive Lr (Z = 103) with O₂ gas. Ions of ²⁵⁵Lr were produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction ²⁰⁹Bi(⁴⁸Ca,2n) ²⁵⁵Lr and were studied with a novel gas-phase ion chemistry technique. The produced ²⁵⁵Lr²⁺ ions were trapped and O₂ gas was introduced, such that the charge-exchange reaction to reduce ²⁵⁵Lr²⁺ to ²⁵⁵Lr¹⁺ was observed and the reaction rate constant was determined to be k = 1.5(7) × 10^-10 cm³/mol/s. The observation that this reaction proceeds establishes the lower limit on the second ionization potential of Lr to be 13.3(3) eV. This gives further support that the actinide series terminates with Lr. Additionally, this result can be used to better interpret the situation concerning the placement of Lu and Lr on the periodic table within the current framework of the actinide hypothesis. The success of this experimental approach now identifies unique opportunities for future gas-phase reaction studies on actinide and super heavy elements.

Understanding Periodic and Non-periodic Chemistry in Periodic Tables

The chemical elements are the "conserved principles" or "kernels" of chemistry that are retained when substances are altered. Comprehensive overviews of the chemistry of the elements and their compounds are needed in chemical science. To this end, a graphical display of the chemical properties of the elements, in the form of a Periodic Table, is the helpful tool. Such tables have been designed with the aim of either classifying real chemical substances or emphasizing formal and aesthetic concepts. Simplified, artistic, or economic tables are relevant to educational and cultural fields, while practicing chemists profit more from "chemical tables of chemical elements." Such tables should incorporate four aspects: (i) typical valence electron configurations of bonded atoms in chemical compounds (instead of the common but chemically atypical ground states of free atoms in physical vacuum); (ii) at least three basic chemical properties (valence number, size, and energy of the valence shells), their joint variation across the elements showing principal and secondary periodicity; (iii) elements in which the (sp)8, (d)10, and (f)14 valence shells become closed and inert under ambient chemical conditions, thereby determining the "fix-points" of chemical periodicity; (iv) peculiar elements at the top and at the bottom of the Periodic Table. While it is essential that Periodic Tables display important trends in element chemistry we need to keep our eyes open for unexpected chemical behavior in ambient, near ambient, or unusual conditions. The combination of experimental data and theoretical insight supports a more nuanced understanding of complex periodic trends and non-periodic phenomena.
