Estimating the Severity of Oral Lesions Via Analysis of Cone Beam Computed Tomography Reports: A Proposed Deep Learning Model

OBJECTIVES

Several factors such as unavailability of specialists, dental phobia, and financial difficulties may lead to a delay between receiving an oral radiology report and consulting a dentist. The primary aim of this study was to distinguish between high-risk and low-risk oral lesions according to the radiologist's reports of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Such a facility may be employed by dentist or his/her assistant to make the patient aware of the severity and the grade of the oral lesion and referral for immediate treatment or other follow-up care.

METHODS

A total number of 1134 CBCT radiography reports owned by Shiraz University of Medical Sciences were collected. The severity level of each sample was specified by three experts, and an annotation was carried out accordingly. After preprocessing the data, a deep learning model, referred to as CNN-LSTM, was developed, which aims to detect the degree of severity of the problem based on analysis of the radiologist's report. Unlike traditional models which usually use a simple collection of words, the proposed deep model uses words embedded in dense vector representations, which empowers it to effectively capture semantic similarities.

RESULTS

The results indicated that the proposed model outperformed its counterparts in terms of precision, recall, and F1 criteria. This suggests its potential as a reliable tool for early estimation of the severity of oral lesions.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows the effectiveness of deep learning in the analysis of textual reports and accurately distinguishing between high-risk and low-risk lesions. Employing the proposed model which can Provide timely warnings about the need for follow-up and prompt treatment can shield the patient from the risks associated with delays.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Our collaboratively collected and expert-annotated dataset serves as a valuable resource for exploratory research. The results demonstrate the pivotal role of our deep learning model could play in assessing the severity of oral lesions in dental reports.

An enhanced approach for sentiment analysis based on meta-ensemble deep learning

Sentiment analysis, commonly known as “opinion mining,” aims to identify sentiment polarities in opinion texts. Recent years have seen a significant increase in the acceptance of sentiment analysis by academics, businesses, governments, and several other organizations. Numerous deep-learning efforts have been developed to effectively handle more challenging sentiment analysis problems. However, the main difficulty with deep learning approaches is that they require a lot of experience and hard work to tune the optimal hyperparameters, making it a tedious and time-consuming task. Several recent research efforts have attempted to solve this difficulty by combining the power of ensemble learning and deep learning. Many of these efforts have concentrated on simple ensemble techniques, which have some drawbacks. Therefore, this paper makes the following contributions: First, we propose a meta-ensemble deep learning approach to improve the performance of sentiment analysis. In this approach, we train and fuse baseline deep learning models using three levels of meta-learners. Second, we propose the benchmark dataset “Arabic-Egyptian Corpus 2” as an extension of a previous corpus. The corpus size has been increased by 10,000 annotated tweets written in colloquial Arabic on various topics. Third, we conduct several experiments on six benchmark datasets of sentiment analysis in different languages and dialects to evaluate the performance of the proposed meta-ensemble deep learning approach. The experimental results reveal that the meta-ensemble approach effectively outperforms the baseline deep learning models. Also, the experiments reveal that meta-learning improves performance further when the probability class distributions are used to train the meta-learners.

HAS: Hybrid Analysis of Sentiments for the perspective of customer review summarization

The reviews posted online by the end-users can help the business owners obtain a fair evaluation of their products/services and take the necessary steps. However, due to the large volume of online reviews being generated from time to time, it becomes challenging for business owners to track each review. The Customer Review Summarization (CRS) model that can present the summarized information and offer businesses with significant acumens to understand the reason behind customers' choices and behavior, would therefore be desirable. We propose the Hybrid Analysis of Sentiments (HAS) for the perspective of effective CRS in this paper. The HAS consists of steps like pre-processing, feature extraction, and review classification. The pre-processing phase removes the unwanted data from the text reviews using Natural Language Processing (NLP) based on different pre-processing functions. For efficient feature extraction, the hybrid mechanism consisting of aspect-related features and review-related features is proposed to build the unique feature vector for each customer review. Review classification is performed using different supervised classifiers like Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes, and Random Forest. The experimental results show that HAS efficiently performed the sentiment analysis and outperformed the existing state-of-the-art techniques with an F1 score of 92.2%.
