Anthropometric Analysis of Indian Faces: A Systematic Review

Objective

Facial anthropometric data vary significantly within the Indian population due to the racial, ethnic and geographic diversity. The anthropometric data of a given ethnic community may not match the other due to diverse ethnic variations, and hence, this study is intended to review the facial anthropometric data pertaining to the diverse Indian populace through a systematic literature survey.

Materials and Method

An electronic search done on Medline, Embase and Central databases was utilized to conduct a systematic review of literature. The available data were analyzed based on the various esthetic subunits of the face. The following inclusion criteria were considered: (1) studies depicting the anthropometric data of any ethnic group identified as belonging to India, (2) studies originating from Indian subcontinent, (3) studies which included data of male and female subjects separately and (4) articles in English language only. The following exclusion criteria were considered: (1) atudies conducted on participants with severe malocclusion, developmental craniofacial anomalies, post-traumatic facial deformities or with a history of previous craniofacial or cosmetic surgery, (2) studies which did not specify the anthropometric landmarks used to obtain the measurements, (3) studies in which the statistical analysis was not provided, or if data were grouped across genders and (4) editorials, commentaries, case reports, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and articles not available in English language.

Results

Twenty-one articles met the inclusion criteria. Majority of the Indians, particularly men, seem to have a mesoproscopic facial phenotype. The vertical and horizontal facial dimensions of the Indian male are comparably larger than the Indian female. There is sexual dimorphism among the Indian population with regard to the upper and lower thirds of the face, with little or no gender difference as regards the middle third of the face. It was observed that the nasal dimensions of the Indian race were not compatible with that of the occidental, oriental or the western race. The overall facial structure and the upper half of the face were critical in determining facial attractiveness in Indian males while the lower half of the face and the mandibular contour were critical in determining facial attractiveness in females.

Conclusion

It is observed that there is a paucity of facial anthropometric data for the Indian population considering the ethnic, racial and geographic diversity. Since the prevalence of craniofacial anomalies and dentofacial deformities in India is high and thus the scope for corrective surgery, it is important to compile baseline facial anthropometric data based on the ethnic diversity of the Indian population.

Acquisition of Precision and Reliability of Modalities for Facial Reconstruction and Aesthetic Surgery: A Systematic Review

The foundation of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery is a confluence of advanced technologies, plethora of procedures, inventive modifications, and planned strategies. In surgical planning, the most crucial steps for treating a patient are evaluating the facial morphometry and recognizing the deviations from the baseline values of facial parameters. Various imaging and non-imaging modalities and sub-modalities contribute to diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care. These techniques are an important milestone of pre-, peri-, and postoperative care in facial reconstruction. The current research aims to comprehensively explain imaging and non-imaging technologies encompassing both innovative and traditional approaches in facial reconstruction. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from 1990 to 2022, and systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA recommendations. Undoubtedly, various factors impact the selection of facial analysis acquisition approaches and their prospective. The surgical team must understand such modalities' potential for diagnosis and treatment. The evolution of three-dimensional imaging has been fueled because of the need for devices with high speed, small size, and several functions. Automation with more efficiency and precision is the way of the future for three-dimensional imaging. Stereophotogrammetry can clearly quantify the field of facial analysis. All the publications under consideration came to the same conclusion: Canfield's Vectra three-dimensional imaging devices can provide accurate, repeatable stereophotogrammetric pictures. Although a few minor mistakes were recorded, most examined devices are deemed reliable and accurate tools for Plastic surgeons.

Analysis of Imperative Facial Angles for Rhinoplasty: An Endowment to the Surgeon

To study the nasal framework of patients in relation to CT scan and observe the Nasofrontal angle and Nasofacial angle in patients. This study is a prospective observational study. It was done from January 2020 to December 2020. It involved selection of patients with nasal complaints and external nasal deformity followed by their CT scan evaluation. It included a 3D analysis of the CT scan using a computer software. Preoperative photographic evaluation of the patient was done in frontal, lateral and basal view for a better understanding and correlation. Thirty patients were evaluated and their 3D reconstructed CT scans were observed. The mean Nasofrontal angle was 116.69°. The mean was 110.43° in males and 126.08° in females. The mean Nasofacial Angle was 37.68. The mean was 43.05° in males and 29.62° in females. There was a significant statistical difference seen. The demand for rhinoplasty in India is on rise. The studies done in the past have evaluated patients using plain 2D CT films. In this study, 3D reconstruction of CT scan has been done. There are meagre studies which describe the aesthetics of Indian population. It aids in preoperative evaluation and plan of surgery, enables a good doctor-patient communication. Also, it can be used for clinical learning of resident doctors.

Rhinogrid™: Precision Instrument in Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgery where the result depends on precision in assessment, shaping and placing grafts. The grafts should be accurately measured with the help of precise measuring instruments. There is a need of instruments which allow precise slicing, measuring and re-sizing of the grafts. Other than depending on multiple instruments for slicing and measuring, we need a single instrument with multiple functions. We have developed a simple tool for measurements in Rhinoplasty incorporating both measurement grid and costal cartilage slicer into one device.
