Abstract
BACKGROUND Infertility affects one couple out of six worldwide. Male infertilty can result from congenital or acquired factors, of which pathogens that reach the genital tract through sexual contact or blood dissemination. The impact of major viral, bacterial and parasitic infections on the male genital tract and fertility has been summarized. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS A systematic review of articles published in the Google Scholar and PubMed databases was conducted. It turns out that viruses, as well as bacteria and parasites are major inducers of male genital tract infections and ensuing infertility through damage to the organs and subsequent loss of function and/or through direct damage to the sperm cells. Moreover, not only male infertility results from such infections but these can also be transmitted to women and even to the offspring, thus highlighting the need to efficiently detect, treat and prevent them.

Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii is a common parasite that infects warm-blooded animals and influences host physiology. T. gondii is known to target the host's central nervous system, affecting circulating levels of steroid hormones, fear-related behaviors, and health, although these effects appear to vary among host taxa. Here, we investigated the relationship between T. gondii infection and levels of plasma testosterone and cortisol within a wild population of spotted hyenas (Crocutacrocuta, n = 109). In our analyses, we accounted for age and sex via stratified regression analyses. We detected a negative association between circulating plasma testosterone and T. gondii infection among female cubs and subadults as well as adult male hyenas. We found no associations between T. gondii infection and cortisol in any age class or sex group of hyenas. Our work adds to a growing body of literature by characterizing the relationship between T. gondii infection and physiology in a novel host in its natural habitat. In a broader context, our findings indicate that responses to infection vary with characteristics of the host and point to a clear need for additional studies and priorities for future work that include diverse taxa and ecological settings. Toxoplasma gondii infects diverse hosts and leads to differences in hormone levels. The relationship between T. gondii infection and host hormone response is mixed. We assessed if wild spotted hyena hormones differed by T. gondii infection. Testosterone was lower in infected female cub/subadult and adult males hyenas. Our results parallel laboratory findings but provide added realism of a wild animal.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to estimate the molecular prevalence of T. gondii along various segments of the genital tract of confirmed chronically infected ewes. Genital tracts were collected from 42 ewes; meat samples from the same ewes were previously confirmed positive for T. gondii DNA. The whole DNA was extracted from 4 parts of the genital tract (ovary, horns, body of the uterus and vagina). PCR was used to amplify a 114 base-pairs of T. gondii B1 gene. For all studied samples, 95.2 % had at least one infected genital part. Toxoplasma gondii infection was confirmed by sequencing 20 amplicons randomly chosen. The majority of infected animals has 4 T. gondii-infected genital anatomical parts. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed a cluster of adult animals (>24 months) with positive PCR in the ovaries and the vagina and another cluster of Barbarine animals having positive PCR in the horns and body of the uterus. General linear model confirmed PCA results and showed a significant higher prevalence of T. gondii in the ovaries and vagina of older animals (p = 0.001 and p = 0.02, respectively) and a higher prevalence of T. gondii in the horns of the uterus of Barbarine animals (p = 0.03). Toxoplasma gondii seems to highly persist along the various segments of the ewe's genital tract but further investigations are necessary to link such prevalence with the pathological implications.

Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii, as an obligate protozoan parasite, can infect a wide variety of animals as well as human. As some studies have shown, toxoplasmosis decreases the fertility potency in different hosts, so there is a necessity for studies to determine the effects of T. gondii on reproductive system. Therefore, this project was aimed to investigate the effect of toxoplasmosis on the male reproductive system and sperm DNA integrity. In this experimental study, 80 Wistar male rats were divided into two groups as follows: infected group (inoculated by T.gondii tachyzoites) and control group [injected by Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)]. Afterward, data were collected in every 10 days interval. The detailed description of the sperm parameters were recorded, and then, chromatin integrity of the epididymal sperm was analyzed using Aniline blue (AB), Acridine orange (AO), Chromomycin A3 (CMA3), and Toluidine blue (TB) staining. Sperm parameters (motility, viability, count, and normal sperm) significantly decreased in the infected rats. Sperm stained by AO staining showed a higher percentage in the infected rats compared to the control group on day 70 (P = 0.03). The mean percentages of AB stained sperm on days 30 (P = 0.01) and 50 (P = 0.02) were higher than the healthy group. Also, the significant rising of the stained sperm was observed in the infected group on day 20 (P = 0.01). Sperm stained with TB in the infected group has significantly increased on days 30 to 60 [day 30 (P = 0.001), 40 (P < 0.001), 50 (P = 0.014), and 60 (P = 0.001)]. T. gondii infection leads to the diminished fertility parameters as well as the damaged DNA sperm. The parasite could temporarily interfere with the male reproductive system.

Abstract
Numerous recent studies show that vitamin D deficiency potentiates various chronic physical and psychiatric disorders and diseases. It has been shown that a similar range of disorders is also associated with latent infection with Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908). For instance, among cancer, diabetes and schizophrenia patients, we find a higher prevalence of both toxoplasmosis and vitamin D deficiency. Theoretically, therefore, vitamin D deficiency could be the missing link between toxoplasmosis and these disorders. We tested this hypothesis by searching for decreased vitamin D levels in the serum of subjects infected with T. gondii (furthermore called Toxoplasma-infected subjects) in two cross-sectional and one case-control study. Results of the first cross-sectional study (N = 72) suggest that Toxoplasma-infected neurasthenic patients have non-significantly lower levels of calcidiol than Toxoplasma-free patients (study A: P = 0.26 in women, P = 0.68 in men). However, two other studies (study B: N = 400; study C: N = 191) showed a non-significantly higher concentration of vitamin D in Toxoplasma-infected subjects than in Toxoplasma-free subjects both in men (study B: P = 0.70, study C: P = 0.55) and in women (study B: P = 0.64, study C: P = 0.12). Taken together, our preliminary results thus do not support the hypothesis that toxoplasmosis could be associated with vitamin D decrease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND About a third of people in the world are infected with Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite has been found in the reproductive organs and semen of males of many animal species as well as humans. The effects of toxoplasmosis on sperm count, motility and morphology were confirmed in rats. A higher prevalence of toxoplasmosis has been observed in infertile men. On the other hand, no significant effect of infection on semen parameters in men was found in one already published study. OBJECTIVES To compare the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in men with and without semen pathology and to examine in detail the possible impact of infection on semen volume, sperm count, motility and morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS The pre-registered cross-sectional study included 669 men who visited the Centre for Assisted Reproduction in Prague from June 2016 until June 2018. RESULTS The incidence of fertility problems was significantly higher in the 163 Toxoplasma-infected men (48.47%) than in the 506 Toxoplasma-free men (42.29%), τ = 0.049, P = 0.029. After correction for multiple tests, we found significantly lower sperm concentration, concentration of progressively motile sperm, and concentration of non-progressively motile sperm in Toxoplasma-positive men than in Toxoplasma-negative men using partial Kendall correlation with age controlled. In addition, toxoplasmosis correlated with sperm quality in smokers but not in non-smokers. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Our results suggest that latent toxoplasmosis affects certain semen parameters (sperm count and motility), but does not seem to affect sperm morphology and semen volume. Impairment of semen parameters may be either a side effect of the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in male reproductive organs or a product of manipulation activity of the parasite aimed to increase the efficiency of the sexual route of its transmission. Tobacco smoking also appears to exacerbate the negative impact of toxoplasmosis on semen parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some researchers have reported that Toxoplasma gondii can cause serious reproductive impairment in male animals. Specifically, T. gondii destroy the quality of sperm in the epididymis, which affects their sexual ability. However, among such studies, none have investigated the male reproductive transcriptome. Therefore, to investigate the relationship between T. gondii and sperm maturation, we infected mice with T. gondii prugniaud (PRU) strain and performed transcriptome sequencing of the epididymis. RESULTS Compared with the control group, 431 upregulated and 229 downregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found (P-value < 0.05, false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05 and |log2 (fold change)| ≥ 1). According to results of a bioinformatics analysis, Gene Ontology (GO) function is divided into three categories: cellular component, molecular function and biological process. Upon performing GO analysis, we found that some DEGs correlated with an integral part of membrane, protein complex, cell surface, ATP binding, immune system process, signal transduction and metabolic process which are responsible for the epididymal injury. DEGs were mapped to 101 unique KEGG pathways. Pathways such as cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and apoptosis are closely related to sperm quality. Moreover, Tnfsf10 and spata18 can damage the mitochondria in sperm, which decreases sperm motility and morphology. CONCLUSIONS We sequenced the reproductive system of male mice chronically infected with T. gondii, which provides a new direction for research into male sterility caused by Toxoplasma infection. This work provides valuable information and a comprehensive database for future studies of the interaction between T. gondii infection and the male reproductive system.

Abstract
Background Congenital toxoplasmosis has a wide range of presentation at birth varying from severe neurological features such as hydrocephalus and chorioretinitis to a well appearing baby, who may develop complications late in infancy. While neuroendocrine abnormalities associated with congenital toxoplasmosis are uncommon, isolated central diabetes insipidus is extremely rare. Case presentation Here, we report on a female infant who presented with fever, convulsions, and polyuria. Examination revealed weight and length below the 3rd centile along with signs of severe dehydration. Fundal examination showed bilateral chorioretinitis. This infant developed hypernatremia together with increased serum osmolality and decreased both urine osmolality and specific gravity consistent with central diabetes insipidus. Serology for toxoplasma specific immunoglobulin M was high for both the mother and the baby and polymerase chain reaction for toxoplasma deoxyribonucleic acid was positive in the infant confirming congenital toxoplasmosis. Brain computerized tomography scans demonstrated ventriculomegaly associated with cerebral and cortical calcifications. Fluid and electrolyte abnormalities responded to nasal vasopressin therapy. Conclusion This report highlights central diabetes inspidus as a rare presentation of congenital toxoplasmosis.
