Mediating and moderating effects of loneliness between social support and life satisfaction among empty nesters in China

Mediating effect of social support and resilience between loneliness and depression in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analytic structural equation modeling

BACKGROUND

Loneliness is a powerful stressor for depression in older adults, and resilience and social support may mediate this relationship, while the evidence is limited. Hence, our study aims to explore the mediating role of social support and resilience between loneliness and depression and to test possible moderators.

METHODS

We searched 12 databases without language and publish time restrictions and obtained the correlation coefficients. This review constructed two-stage meta-analytical structural equality modeling (MASEA) to test the mediating effect of social support and resilience. Additionally, use one-stage MASEA to test the moderator effect of women proportion, published year, and country of study.

RESULTS

This study included 53 studies and 40, 929 older adults. Loneliness directly affected depression (β = 0.28, 95 % CI: 0.20, 0.36). Social support (β = 0.06, 95 % CI: 0.02, 0.09) and resilience (β = 0.15, 95 % CI: 0.12, 0.18) mediated the relationship. The proportion of women in the sample was moderator (χ2(5) = 11.10, p = 0.05). When the proportion exceeded 60 %, the path coefficient of loneliness and social support (β = -0.45, SE = 0.055) was larger than that of the subgroup below 60 % (β = -0.32, SE = 0.041).

LIMITATIONS

It was indefinite whether the evidence would be supported in longitudinal designs. Influenced by the original research data, it is impossible to calculate the model parameters of gender discrepancy.

CONCLUSIONS

Health aging policy-makers adopting social support and resilience intervention will help strengthen the coping skills of older adults confronting loneliness and reduce the risk of depression.

The effects of health insurance and physical exercise participation on life satisfaction of older people in China-Based on CHNS panel data from 2006 to 2015

Background

In China, the problem of aging population has become more and more serious. The factors influencing life satisfaction of older people are becoming a significant issue. This study explores the effects of health insurance and physical exercise on life satisfaction of older people in China.

Method

This study used an unbalanced panel dataset (n = 6,393, T = 4) of older adults aged 60-80 years from the 2006 to 2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). A panel ordered logistic regression model was developed to examine the effects of health insurance and physical exercise on older people' life satisfaction. Mediation tests were used to examine the mediating role of physical exercise in the effect of health insurance on life satisfaction of older people.

Result

Life satisfaction of older people was positively associated with participation in health insurance (OR = 1.439) and physical exercise (OR = 1.033). Participation in government health insurance, urban employee health insurance (UEBMI), new rural cooperative health insurance (NRCMI), and other commercial health insurance all have positive effects on life satisfaction of older people. Physical exercise plays a masking role in the effect of health insurance on life satisfaction of older people.

Conclusion

Participation in health insurance and physical exercise are important means to promote life satisfaction among older people. Physical exercise affects the impact of health insurance on older people's life satisfaction.

How Chinese children's filial piety beliefs affect their parents' life satisfaction and loneliness

Filial piety (or xiao) is a unique Chinese culture that affects older adults' life satisfaction and loneliness. Guided by the dual filial piety model and socioemotional selectivity theory, this study explores how adult children's filial piety beliefs affect their parent's life satisfaction and loneliness. A total of 350 pairs of parent-child data were collected through a parent-child pair design. Results show that emotional support provided by adult children and emotional support perceived by parents (i.e., the transmission of emotional support) fully mediated the relationship between children's reciprocal filial piety belief and parents' life satisfaction and loneliness, and partially mediated the relationship between children's authoritarian filial piety belief and parents' life satisfaction and loneliness. However, instrumental support provided by adult children and instrumental support perceived by parents (i.e., the transmission of instrumental support) had no such mediating roles in the relationship between adult children's filial piety beliefs and parents' life satisfaction and loneliness. This finding suggests that to improve parental well-being, adult Chinese children should cultivate their filial piety and pay close attention to their parents' emotional needs.

The Importance of Age-Friendly City on Older People's Continuity and Life Satisfaction

According to continuity theory, successful aging is promoted when older people are able to continue familiar activities as a way to maintain self-identity. The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of both external resources provided by Taipei city and older adults’ internal resources in internal and external continuity and life satisfaction. The data were from the 2019 Taipei City Senior Citizen Condition Survey acquired through face-to-face interviews. Only the community-based sample without disability was included in the analysis (n = 1494). Structural equation modeling was used for the analysis. Both internal and external resources significantly promoted internal continuity (physical activity, Internet use, and lifelong learning) and external continuity (work, social connectedness, and social participation), and the effects of personal resources were larger. External continuity was positively related to life satisfaction. The effects of external resources on continuity and life satisfaction were stronger in older women than in older men. Age-friendly cities may provide support for activity continuity and promote well-being for older people. Policy suggestions are discussed.
