The Mediating Role of Needs Satisfaction for Prosocial Behavior and Autonomy Support

The effect of prosocial behaviours on Chinese undergraduate nursing students' subjective well-being: The mediating role of psychological resilience and coping styles

This study aimed to explore the effect of prosocial behaviours on Chinese undergraduate nursing students' subjective well-being (SWB) and examine the roles of psychological resilience and coping styles. The sample for this study included 683 nursing students from two undergraduate universities in Henan Province, China. SWB, prosocial behaviours, psychological resilience, and coping styles were assessed by the Index of Well-Being, the Prosocial Behavioural Tendency Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, respectively. We adopted Pearson's correlation analysis and the PROCESS Macro Model 81 in regression analysis to explore the relationships among prosocial behaviours, psychological resilience, coping styles, and SWB. Prosocial behaviours of undergraduate nursing students had a positive predictive effect on SWB; psychological resilience and coping styles both were the mediating variable between prosocial behaviours and undergraduate nursing students' SWB; psychological resilience and coping styles played a chain mediating role between the prosocial behaviours and SWB of undergraduate nursing students. The results indicated that prosocial behaviours not only directly affected the SWB of undergraduate nursing students but also affected the SWB of undergraduate nursing students via psychological resilience and coping styles. These results offer certain theoretical support and guidance for the research and improvement of undergraduate nursing students' SWB and emphasize the importance of interventions to increase prosocial behaviours, improve psychological resilience, promote positive coping styles, and address negative coping styles.

Conceptualization social influence from the need to belong perspective on psychological needs' satisfaction to share knowledge

Purpose

Aiming to comprehend the function of social influence as an extrinsic motive influencing individuals' psychological needs satisfaction to share knowledge in higher educational institutions, the study will profile prior literature on how social influence affects knowledge sharing and conceptualize a suggested framework.

Design/methodology/approach

The research thoroughly examined the literature for the previous ten years using a comprehensive evaluation, mapping and analyzes research networks of the literature on relational social influence factors through bibliometric analysis. It offers a conceptual framework that explains extrinsic social factors and their effects on the psychological needs satisfaction to share knowledge among people from the viewpoint of a need to belong.

Findings

The study concluded a unique a conceptual framework that provides a solid understanding for the relational social influence phenomenon in the perspective of the need to belong, which satisfy the psychological needs to share knowledge. This will contribute to further investigations in the research area.

Research limitations

The study is a qualitative study and is limited in its generalizability as it needs further investigations to overcome the bias on the part of the researcher.

Practical implications

Adopting the proposed conceptual framework serves as a diagnostic tool for researchers to address the social influence that is likely to boost individuals' satisfaction to share knowledge.

Originality/value

This research presents a novel understanding of social influence as an extrinsic motivator arising from a sense of belonging that affects individuals' needs satisfaction to share knowledge.

Social implications

Increasing the awareness of how social influence is likely to motivate individuals to connect with one another, interact socially, and work together collaboratively to fulfil their satisfaction of psychological needs to share knowledge.

The Relationship between Inclusion Climate and Voice Behaviors beyond Social Exchange Obligation: The Role of Psychological Needs Satisfaction

Several studies have identified a work environment that promotes inclusiveness as a significant predictor of affiliative organizational citizenship behavior or OCB (such as helping), whereas not much research has focused on inclusion and challenging OCB (i.e., voice). Moreover, no previous studies have explored the above-mentioned relationship in the light of self-determination theory (SDT), given that social exchange theory has traditionally been used as the main explanatory mechanism. Therefore, the aim of the present research was to test the mediating role of basic psychological needs satisfaction in the relationship between inclusion climate, promotive voice and prohibitive voice. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires administered to 246 employees of an international company operating in the service industry. Structural equation modelling was used to analyze the data utilizing R software. Results showed that satisfaction of the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness partially mediated the relationship between inclusion climate and promotive and prohibitive voice, therefore supporting the idea that social exchange might not be the only determinant for employees to engage in voice behavior. Most importantly, those findings underline how a truly inclusive workplace needs to fulfil its employees’ basic needs of behaving volitionally, feeling effective and connecting meaningfully; this would motivate the workers to voice their suggestions and concerns.

Escala de Necesidades Psicológicas Básicas: adaptación al ámbito educativo en una muestra de adolescentes argentinos

La Teoría de la Autodeterminación refiere a tres necesidades psicológicas básicas, presentes en el transcurso de la vida de un individuo: autonomía, competencia y relación. El objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar las propiedades psicométricas de la adaptación al contexto educativo de la Escala de Necesidades Psicológicas Básicas de Deci y Ryan (2000) en población adolescente Argentina. La adaptación cobra relevancia debido a que no existe hasta el momento en Argentina una versión de la escala que permita evaluar dichas necesidades en estudiantes de nivel secundario. Para medir la validez de constructo de la nueva versión se realizó un Análisis Factorial Confirmatorio evaluando la presencia de las dimensiones propuestas por los autores originales. Se utilizó el método de máxima verosimilitud, teniendo en cuenta el valor chi cuadrado, chi/gl, los índices CFI, GFI, AGFI, RMR y RMSEA. Para estudiar la validez convergente se realizó un análisis de correlación con la Utrecht-Work Compromiso Scale en su versión para estudiantes y con el rendimiento académico de los alumnos. Para evaluar la consistencia interna del instrumento se utilizó el coeficiente Omega. La muestra estuvo conformada por 313 estudiantes de nivel secundario, con edades comprendidas entre los 12 y los 16 años (M = 13.46; DT = 1.05). Los resultados del presente estudio aportan evidencias empíricas que avalan buenos niveles de validez y confiabilidad de la Escala de Necesidades Psicológicas Básicas en el contexto educacional y en la población adolescente. De este modo, las propiedades psicométricas de la versión adaptada del instrumento son aceptables.
