Demystifying the life domain in work-life balance: A Malaysian perspective

The psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Demoralization Scale (DS-II) in women with breast cancer

Background

Demoralization is a syndrome of existential distress and despair in patients with cancer and other severe medical illnesses. The Demoralization Scale (DS-II) is self-administered and contains 16 items, and it has two factors: meaning and purpose and distress and coping ability.

Materials and Methods

Women with breast cancer (240) completed the scales DS-II, positive and negative affect, state hope, patient health, and quality of life. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and divergent and convergent validity were used to measure the construct validity of DS-II. CFA was chosen to check the fit of the two-factor model. Divergent and convergent validity were investigated using Pearson's correlation test. The reliability of DS-II was evaluated by the internal consistency method. Cronbach's alpha was used to calculate the internal consistency of the DS-II.

Results

The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the subscales of meaning and purpose, distress and coping ability, and the total score was obtained: 0.67, 0.72, and 0.81, respectively, indicated this scale's good reliability. Furthermore, the Pearson correlation coefficient results showed the appropriate convergent validity and good divergent validity of the DS-II.

Conclusion

The DS-II has sound psychometric properties and can be recommended as a reliable tool for assessing demoralization in women with breast cancer.

Prevalence and severity of anxiety symptoms among family members of nyaope users in Tshwane, South Africa

Background

Nyaope is a strongly addictive novel psychoactive substance that is commonly used in predominantly black townships in South Africa. The undesired behaviours of the users result in family members developing mental health challenges. Nyaope users often commit petty crimes, including stealing from families and neighbours.

Aim

The aim of this study was to quantify anxiety symptoms among family members of nyaope users in Tshwane, South Africa.

Setting

Data were collected from nine townships within Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.

Methods

The quantitative cross-sectional survey used the General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) tool to quantify anxiety symptoms, and a questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data from a sample of 390 participants.

Results

The ages of the participants ranged from 18 years to 87 years, with a mean of 47 years. The mothers to the nyaope users were the biggest group at 35% (n = 138). The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 73% (n = 286) of the total sample and ranged from mild (41.8, n = 163), moderate (14.62, n = 57) and severe (16.92%, n = 66). The Pearson chi-square test identified significant associations between anxiety symptoms and the gender of the participant (p = 0.001), the age of the nyaope user and the period of nyaope use (p = 0.008). Multivariate regression model indicated gender and place of residence as a significant variable in the development of anxiety symptoms (p = 0.01).

Conclusion

Nyaope use is a risk factor for the development of anxiety for family members of nyaope users with the highest proportion reporting mild symptoms.

Contribution

There is a need to develop interventions for mental health support for families of nyaope users.

"They see me as mentally ill": the stigmatization experiences of Chinese menopausal women in the family

BACKGROUND

Menopausal women are regarded as "abnormal people" in China and are often discriminated against and ostracized, especially in the privacy of their homes. However, research on the stigmatization of menopausal women in China is limited. The aim of this study is to explore and describe the stigmatization experiences of Chinese menopausal women in the family and their feelings about these experiences.

METHODS

A phenomenological qualitative research design involving in-depth semi-structured interviews was selected. Our data analysis adopted Colaizzi's methodology.

RESULTS

Fourteen menopausal women participated in this study. Four themes and 12 subthemes emerged: (1) violent treatment (verbal and physical violence); (2) lack of attention and companionship (lack of understanding of physical and psychological suffering, neglect of the value of labour and difficulty finding someone to talk to and accompany them); (3) coping struggles (keeping quiet, fighting back, changing inappropriate perceptions and developing a menopausal transition management plan); and (4) despair (deep-rooted perceptions, restrictions on travel and consumption, and unknown "healing" times).

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that Chinese menopausal women suffer physically and mentally within their families. The stigma of menopause is both a symptom of the broad societal lack of knowledge regarding menopause and a reflection of the patriarchal oppression of women in a specific cultural context. Accordingly, this study can help menopausal women and society in general better understand the former's stigmatization experiences and amplify their inner voices. Moreover, it can serve as a reference for the formulation of menopause-related health policies in China and for advocating and promoting humanistic care for menopausal women.

DEVELOPMENT, RELIABILITY, AND VALIDITY OF NURSES' WORK-LIFE BALANCE SCALE IN REGIONAL THAI HOSPITALS

Background and Purpose: Factors influencing work-life balance of regional hospital nurses are different from other professions. This study aimed to develop an instrument to measure work-life balance, and examine its psychometric properties. Methods: Psychometric properties were tested with content validity, construct validity using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and reliability with 598 professional nurses recruited using multi-stage sampling. Results: The Nurses' Work-life Balance Scale (NWLBS) had 38 items and seven components, explaining 64.46% of total variance. Content Validity Index was 0.94. CFA results indicated good fit with empirical data. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.53 to 0.94 for the seven subscales in 30 professional nurses. Conclusions: NWLBS demonstrated good content validity, construct validity, and reliability for assessing nurses' work-life balance.

The Relationship between Job Insecurity and Psychological Well-Being among Malaysian Precarious Workers: Work-Life Balance as a Mediator

The emergence of coronavirus disease has impacted human lives, one of which is economic disruption. Many Malaysian organisations have devised various crisis-response techniques, such as downsizing, laying off, retrenching, and combining. As a result, the number of Malaysians working in precarious jobs, which are defined by unpredictable and uncertain situations, has indirectly increased, hence increasing job insecurity. Therefore, maintaining psychological health is essential to safeguarding the mental health of employees. In the current working landscape, job security and work-life balance have commonly been deemed necessary in contributing to well-being among employees. As a result, the purpose of this study was to examine how work-life balance influences the relationship between job insecurity and psychological well-being among Malaysian precarious workers. It also fills a gap in the research by explaining the causal association between job insecurity and psychological well-being among precarious workers, as previous well-being studies have largely focused on employees with secure jobs. There were 442 responders collected using purposive and snowball sampling methods, and they were requested to complete the Job Insecurity Scale (JIS), Work-Life Balance, and Well-Being Index Scale (WHO-5). Job instability was negatively connected with work-life balance and psychological well-being. On the other hand, work-life balance was found to be positively related to psychological well-being. This supports the notion that work-life balance is a significant mediator in the relationship between job insecurity and psychological well-being. These findings emphasise that Malaysian precarious workers with job security could enhance their psychological well-being by achieving work-life balance.

Understanding Social Media Usage at Work from the Perspective of Social Capital Theory

With the pervasive use of social media (SM) in organizations, it is regarded as a relevant driver that can influence an employee’s job performance. This study fills in the gap that extends the job performance concept by discovering the role of SM in innovative performance in introducing new ideas beyond standard specifications to produce novel and valuable organizational outcomes. By adopting the social capital theory (SCT), the present study investigates the roles of social media use at work in predicting social capital (network ties, shared vision, and trust) that might promote work engagement and subsequently affect employees’ innovative job performance. The data was collected through an online survey, and 291 Malaysian employees participated. The partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique was applied in data analysis for the measurement model and structural model used in this study. Findings show that SM use at work significantly predicts network ties, shared vision, and trust. Besides, network ties and trust positively promoted work engagement except for shared vision. Subsequently, work engagement was associated with innovative job performance. This study provides theoretical and practical implications for extending knowledge, as well as mitigating plans and efforts to resolve employees’ performance concerning the issues of SM use at work.
