Cyberloafing behaviors among university students: Their relationships with positive and negative affect

Determination of cyberloafing level of speech and Language Therapy Department students

Cyberloafing is the use of (e.g. smartphones, tablets, laptops, and the Internet) for purposes other than work related reasons during work hours. Although cyberloafing in the workplace has been widely investigated, there is relatively a small number of studies on cyberloafing behaviors in educational settings, which refer to students' tendencies to use technology for non-class-related purposes during lectures. The goal of the current study is to determine how frequently and for what purposes speech and language therapy (SLT) students at Biruni University engage in cyberloafing during lectures. In this quantitative study, The Cyberloafing Scale was administered to 264 undergraduate students (235 female; 27 male; 2 preferred not to disclose). The results revealed that SLT students' cyberloafing behavior was very high. However, there is no statistically significant difference between the gender variable and the overall mean score for cyberloafing. There is a statistically significant difference between genders in gaming/gambling subscale favoring males and in shopping subscale favoring females. Further studies should be conducted to analyze cyberloafing behavior in health education.

Challenge-obstacle stressors and cyberloafing among higher vocational education students: the moderating role of smartphone addiction and Maladaptive

The start of higher vocational education and training is a new stage for students with a challenge between theoretical classes and the new expectations and demands of companies during the internship period. To understand some of the implications of stress on cyberloafing, we can distinguish between stress perceived as an obstacle that can be overcome - challenge stress - or as a threat that can block work performance - obstacle stress - and stress perceived as an obstacle that can be overcome - challenge stress - or as a threat that can block work performance - obstacle stress-. The aim of this research is to find out the relationships between challenge-obstacle stress in Cyberloafing, as well as the moderating effect of Smartphone Addiction and Maladaptive. In this study, the Challenge-Hindrance Stressors, Smartphone addiction scale-short version (SAS-SV) instrument, the Maladaptive subscale of the Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) and Cyberloafing were applied to 403 upper-level vocational training students from different secondary schools in all provinces of the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain, distributed throughout the provinces that make up this autonomous community. The findings show that students' challenge stressors do not increase Cyberloafing, enabling them to cope with the academic demands and work challenges during the theory and internship period. On the contrary, obstacle stressors generate stressful situations that undermine the acquisition of objectives and development of academic competences. In our research we observe that challenge-obstacle stressors have a disparate influence on cyberloafing. Challenge stressors are negatively related to Maladaptive. The same is not true for obstacle stressors.

Values and physical activity among sports science students in France and China: a transcultural analysis

Objective

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between values and physical activity in France (a Western European individualistic country) and in China (an East Asian collectivist country).

Method

Six hundred and twenty-seven sport science students in France (N = 308, Mage = 18.99, SD = 1.64) and China (N = 319, Mage = 20.44, SD = 1.09) completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire long version and the Portrait Values Questionnaire.

Results

In both France and China, moderated regression analysis revealed that hedonism positively/negatively predicted physical activity, while security-societal, security-personal, and conformity-rules values negatively predicted physical activity. In contrast, stimulation and universalism-nature values positively predicted physical activity only in France. In China, benevolence and benevolence-care positively predicted physical activity, while power dominance negatively predicted physical activity. Additionally, we found evidence of measurement invariance of the value questionnaire.

Discussion and conclusion

Our findings add to the literature by showing that the value-behavior link is partly the same across countries and partly different. Further, our findings show that for certain populations, the previously established hierarchy of human values does not replicate.

Effects of Online Cooperative Learning on Students' Problem-Solving Ability and Learning Satisfaction

As technology changes, it is becoming more common in education for students to acquire knowledge from sources other than just their teachers. In the face of a diverse student background, teachers have to make adjustments in their instruction so that students do not simply listen. Student-based educational philosophy aims to combine instructional methods with cooperative learning to allow students to change from passive learning to active knowledge construction, reinduce students' learning motivation and passion, and enhance students' self-learning effectiveness. Focusing on college students in Fujian Province as the research sample, 360 copies of a questionnaire were distributed for this study. After deducting invalid and incomplete ones, 298 copies remained, with a retrieval rate 83%. The research results showed significantly positive correlations between online cooperative learning and problem-solving ability, problem-solving ability and learning satisfaction, and online cooperative learning and learning satisfaction. According to the results, it is expected, in the digital era, to integrate information technology into the teaching environment and focus on learning objectives to create teaching software with a user-friendly interface, simple operation, learning process recording, and an interactive learning community in the teaching-learning process to develop the characteristics and effectiveness of digital teaching and learning.
