Abstract
Noble metal nanoclusters have attracted much attention due to their excellent optical properties. In the present work, a silver-doped gold-based bimetallic nanoclusters (Au/Ag NCs) were reasonably designed and prepared through a one-pot method by using 5-mercapto-1-tetrazolea-acetic acid sodium salt (MTAS) as a protector and capping agent. In comparison with the monometallic nanoclusters, Ag-doped metallic nanoclusters show better performance. The particle size of the MTAS-Au/Ag NCs is slightly larger than that of the undoped Au NCs by about 1.86 ± 0.5 nm, and the MTAS-Au/Ag NCs exhibit an emission peak at 635 nm with a quantum yield (QY) of 3.05%. The presence of cysteine (Cys) induces efficient quenching of the photoluminescence of the obtained Au/Ag NCs, achieving the sensitive detection of Cys with a detection limit of 16 nM. The fluorescence quenching rate of the nano fluorescent probe has a linear relationship with the cysteine concentration. Under the best detection conditions, the linear range for Cys detection with MTAS-Au/Ag NCs as a probe is 0.05-25.0 μM. Moreover, this probe has been successfully applied to the analysis of Cys in milk and apples, and a satisfactory recovery rate has been obtained, indicating the effectiveness and reliability of the sensor system for the detection of actual samples.

Abstract
Locust powder was converted into water-soluble fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with gram-scale yield through a self-exothermic reaction between nitric acid and diethylenetriamine (DETA) within 10 min. The morphology, elemental information, and optical properties of the N-CDs were characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. Spectroscopic investigation indicated that the fluorescence emission behaviour of N-CDs is excitation wavelength dependent, with the strongest emission peak at 470 nm using a 390 nm excitation wavelength. The strong absorption peak of sunset yellow (SY) at 482 nm overlaps substantially with the blue emission peak (470 nm) of N-CDs. This enables the fluorescence emission of N-CDs to be obviously quenched by SY through the inner filter effect. There was a good linear relationship between the fluorescence quenching degree and the concentrations of SY within the range 0.5-40 μM. The detection limit of developed fluorescence assay for SY is 28 nM, and the relative standard deviation is 2.3% (c = 10 μM). The N-CDs derived from locusts by the self-exothermic reaction are highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probes for SY, which were applied to the fluorescence sensing of SY in different food samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A fluorescent assay for the selective analysis of tartrazine was developed. Tartrazine is a health-threatening food additive commonly used as fake saffron. An optical nanosensor was fabricated based on molecular imprinting technique in which carbon dots (CDs) as fluorophores and tartrazine as a template molecule were embedded in molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) matrix. The synthesized CDs embedded in MIP (CDs-MIP) was characterized by various methods. The fluorescence intensity of (CDs-MIP) was selectively quenched in the presence of tartrazine in comparison with other similar food color additives. The correlation between the quenching of CD-MIP and the concentration of tartrazine was used as an optical sensing for rapid detection of tartrazine in the range of 3.3-20.0 nM (1.8-10.7 μg L-1) with detection limit of 1.3 nM (0.70 μg L-1). Eventually, the designed nanosensor was successfully applied for tartrazine detection in foodstuffs such as fake saffron, saffron tea and saffron ice cream samples.

Ratiometric fluorescence assay based on carbon dots and Cu 2+-catalyzed oxidation of O-phenylenediamine for the effective detection of deferasirox. RSC Adv 2021; 11:34525-34532. Abstract
The monitoring of deferasirox (DEF) has important clinical roles in patients who need iron excretion. However, analytical methods with practicability and simplicity are limited. Moreover, ratiometric fluorescence strategies based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from carbon dots (CDs) as a donor are rarely reported as a drug monitor. In this work, CDs with an appropriate emitting wavelength at 480 nm and excitation around 370 nm were prepared by hydrothermal approach and HCl post-treatment. O-Phenylenediamine (OPD) can be oxidized by Cu2+ to produce yellow fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD) in the system of Cu2+ and OPD (Cu–OPD). Correspondingly, a remarkable FRET from CDs to oxOPD in the system of CDs, Cu2+ and OPD (CDs–Cu–OPD) was fabricated with the quenching illustration of CDs, but emitting property of oxOPD. Attributed to the chelation ability of DEF on Cu2+, the inhibitory effects of DEF on the Cu2+-triggered oxidative capability reduced the FRET system by the decreased oxOPD. Thus, the recovered CDs at F480 and decreased oxOPD at F560 were found through a ratiometric mode by the addition of DEF in CDs–Cu–OPD for the DEF assay. The FRET behavior of CDs and oxOPD in CDs–Cu–OPD was proved clearly through the calculation of the association constant, binding constant, number of binding sites, and the distance between the donor and acceptor. Furthermore, this ratiometric method exhibited promising analytical performance for DEF with the application in real samples. The implementation of this work expands the application field of CDs and OPD oxidation in drug monitoring, and even other biological analyses through ratiometric strategy. CDs with appropriate emission property interacted with Cu2+-catalyzed oxidation of OPD to form a ratiometric fluorescence strategy for deferasirox (DEF) detection.![]()

Abstract
A simple and green approach for the synthesis of photoluminescent N,S-carbon dots (N,S-CDs) has been proposed using a single natural source precursor (bamboo leaf) as raw materials. The as-synthesized N,S-CDs exhibited a highly stable, excitation wavelength-dependent emission, excellent photobleaching, alkali, and salt tolerance. Here, the mechanism of N,S-CDs luminescence was studied via the UV-vis absorption spectrum and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Based on the quenching properties of nitrophenol compounds on the fluorescence of N,S-CDs, the interaction between N,S-CDs and nitrophenol compounds was investigated on detail in aqueous solution. More importantly, the study on photophysical properties of the N,S-CDs may provide the basis for the development of the N,S-CDs for the fluorescent probe of nitrophenol compounds.

Abstract
In the work, water-soluble bovine serum albumin-protected fluorescent nickel nanoclusters (BSA-NiNCs) are used as fluorescent probes to construct a label-free fluorescence quenching sensor for sensitive and selective detection of tartrazine. The fluorescent BSA-NiNCs are synthesized in one pot using BSA as both the template and reducing agent, and hydrogen peroxide as the additive. The as-prepared NiNCs are characterized by using various analytical techniques like transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The synthesized BSA-NiNCs have a quantum yield of ca. 8% by using quinine sulfate as a standard. The sensor for tartrazine detection shows a wide linear range of 0.01-3.5 μM, with a low detection limit of 4 nM. The fluorescence quenching very likely results from the combination of the intermolecular interactions and the secondary inner filter effect between BSA-NiNCs and tartrazine. Then, the proposed sensor is successfully employed for tartrazine detection in drink samples, and the results are comparable with those based on a reference HPLC method.

Abstract
Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are one of metal nanoclusters, which play a pivotal role in the recent advances in the research of fluorescent probes for their fluorescence effect. They are favored by most researchers due to their strong stability in fluorescence and adjustability in fluorescence wavelength when compared to traditional organic fluorescent dyes. In this review, we introduce various synthesis strategies of gold-nanocluster-based fluorescent probes and summarize their application for environmental analysis and biological sensing. The use of gold-nanocluster-based fluorescent probes for the analysis of heavy metals and inorganic and organic pollutants is covered in the environmental analysis while biological labeling, imaging, and detection are presented in biological sensing.
