Graphene-based nanomaterials as potential candidates for environmental mitigation of pesticides

Over the years, bioaccumulation of hazardous chemicals in the food chain has become a critical issue, resulting in numerous health risks. Environmental mitigation aims to clean up contaminated sites and eliminate hazardous materials from the air, water, or soil to restore the site to its original and safe condition. Pesticides constitute one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants which are generally used to increase crop production. Addressing the removal or treatment of pesticides has become pivotal in mitigating environmental threats. Diverse remediation methods are employed to protect the environment and public health. Graphene-based materials have emerged as promising candidates with exceptional properties, including excellent adsorption capacity due to their high surface area, strong hydrophilicity, and tunable properties. Owing to these properties, they have been attracting major research attention in the field of design and fabrication of materials for the mitigation of pesticides from the environment such as from contaminated food, water and other samples. Various physical, chemical and biological extraction techniques are adopted to remove pesticides. This review article provides an insight into the potential role of graphene-based materials in the environmental remediation of pesticides. We have focused on the removal of Organophosphates, Organochlorines, Carbamates and Pyrethroids present in water, fruit, vegetable and other samples, highlighting the urgent need for environmental remediation. While graphene-based materials hold potential for pesticide remediation, addressing challenges in scalable production, assessing long-term sustainability, and mitigating potential environmental impacts are critical steps for successful large-scale applications.

Porous chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework anchored graphene aerogel composite for synergically enhanced solid phase microextraction of polychlorinated naphthalene in environmental water

The residues of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) produced in multiple industrial production and life processes are continuously entering environmental waters through atmospheric deposition and land drainage, and the water pollution caused by PCNs is continuing public concern due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Herein, a new chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework anchored graphene aerogel (COF-GA) was synthesized by covalent modification technology and used as fiber coating of solid-phase microextraction for synergically enhanced extraction of PCNs in environmental water. The extraction efficiency of COF-GA coated fiber was superior to commercial fiber due to the multiple interactions (π-π, hydrophobic interaction, and halogen bonding interaction). The COF-GA coated fiber has good stability, can avoid water vapor interference at 80 °C for a long time (30 -50 min) to maintain adsorption equilibrium, and can be reused at least 96 times. Combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, a sensitive method for the high-efficient enrichment (enrichment factors were 501 -7453 folds) and ultra-sensitive detection (LODs were 0.001 -0.428 pg/mL) of PCNs in environmental water was established. The enrichment factor for PCNs is significantly higher than in previous studies. This proposed method provides new technical support for the daily monitoring and risk assessment of trace PCNs in environmental water.

Miniaturized centrifugation accelerated pipette-tip matrix solid-phase dispersion based on poly(deep eutectic solvents) surface imprinted graphene oxide composite adsorbent for rapid extraction of anti-adipogenesis markers from Solidago decurrens Lour

Overweight and obesity are the causes of many diseases and have become global "epidemics". Research on natural active components with anti-adipogenesis effects in plants has aroused the interest of researchers. One of the most critical problems is establishing sample preparation and analytical techniques for quickly and selectively extracting and determining the active anti-adipogenesis components in complex plant matrices for developing new anti-adipogenic drugs. In this study, a new poly(deep eutectic solvents) surface imprinted graphene oxide composite (PDESs-MIP/GO) with high selectivity for phenolic acids was prepared using deep eutectic solvents as monomers and crosslinkers. A miniaturized centrifugation-accelerated pipette-tip matrix solid-phase dispersion method (CPT-MSPD) with PDESs-MIP/GO as adsorbent, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography, was further developed for the rapid determination of anti-adipogenesis markers in Solidago decurrens Lour. (SDL). The established method was successfully used to determination anti-adipogenesis markers in SDL from different regions, with the advantages of accuracy (recoveries: 94.4 - 115.9 %, RSDs ≤ 9.8 %), speed (CPT-MSPD time: 11 min), selectivity (imprinting factor: ∼2.0), and economy (2 mg of adsorbent and 1 mL of solvents), which is in line with the current advanced principle of "3S+2A" in analytical chemistry.

Porous organic framework as coating for stir bar sorptive extraction of carbamate pesticides from corn and potato samples

Three porous organic frameworks (POFs) were synthesized by the reaction between phloroglucinol and 1,4-phthalaldehyde, 4,4'-biphenyldialdehyde or tris-(4-formylphenyl) amine; the products are named as POF-a, POF-b and POF-c, respectively. They were used to prepare POFs coated stir bars respectively for the extraction of four carbamate pesticides (CMPs). POF-c coated stir bar exhibited better adsorption performance than POF-a/b coated stir bar and commercial stir bars, probably due to the stronger conjugated structure and hydrophobicity of POF-c, and resultant hydrophobic, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions between them. The adsorption mechanism for target CMPs was verified by characterization techniques and molecular dynamics simulation. A method of POF-c coated stir bar sorptive extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-variable wavelength ultraviolet detector was developed for the analysis of four CMPs in corn and potato samples. Under the optimal conditions, LODs of the method were between 0.017 and 0.048 μg/L, and the linear range for four CMPs was 0.1/0.2-200 μg/L.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Carbamate Pesticides Using Magnetic Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived from Benzoate Ligands, Followed by Digital Image Colorimetric Screening and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Analysis

Magnetic sorbents based on iron-aluminum-mixed metal hydroxides composited with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were designed and synthesized using different benzoate ligands, including terephthalic acid, 2-aminoterephthalic acid, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid. The magnetic MOF derived from terephthalic acid ligand exhibited an excellent extraction efficiency, with adsorption capacities in the range of 2193-4196 mg kg^-1, and was applied for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of carbamate pesticides, that is, bendiocarb, carbosulfan, carbofuran, carbaryl, propoxur, isoprocarb, and promecarb. Simple digital image colorimetry based on the diazotization reaction and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were utilized for fast screening and quantification purposes, respectively. A good analytical performance for a simple screening approach using portable equipment was obtained with detection limits in the range of 1.0-18.0 μg L^-1. Under the optimized MSPE-HPLC conditions, the entire developed procedure provided a wide linear range between 0.015 and 1000 μg L^-1, low limits of detection, and limits of quantitation ranging from 0.005 to 0.090 and 0.015-0.300 μg L^-1, respectively. Enrichment factors up to 184 were achieved. The intra- and interday relative standard deviations were below 6.7 and 9.4%, respectively. The proposed MSPE-digital image colorimetry and MSPE-HPLC methods were successfully applied for screening and determining carbamate pesticides in fruits and vegetables. The recoveries were obtained in a satisfactory range of 71.5-122.8%. This discovery has led to the development of integration methods using newly synthesized sorbent materials for the enrichment of carbamate pesticides prior to their analysis in complicated samples. The developed MSPE coupled with digital image colorimetry was efficient for fast carbamate contamination screening, while MSPE-HPLC offered a sensitive analytical methodology for quantifying contaminated samples.

A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on the esterase extracted from kidney bean for high-sensitivity determination of organophosphorus pesticides

An electrochemical sensing platform using kidney bean esterase as a new detection enzyme was proposed for organophosphorus pesticide determination. The determination of trichlorfon can be easily achieved with a LOD as low as 3 ng L−1 (S/N = 3).
