Integrated biofertilization using yeast with cyanobacteria on growth and productivity of wheat

Background

The heavy use of conventional mineral fertilization considerably increased wheat growth and yield components. However, the excessive nitrogen fertilization accounts for large expenses on farmers’ budget and has negative environmental drawbacks to soil and water ecosystems. Recently, establishing wheat plants associations with a variety of N2-fixing cyanobacteria and/or growth promoting microorganisms in farming systems as nutrients source is seen as ecofriendly and economically feasible solution.

Results

In this work, the influence of different nitrogen (N) levels (100% N, 75% N, and 50% N as urea) and cyanobacteria (Cy) and/or yeast (Y) inoculation each alone or both in combination with different nitrogen levels were assessed on two different wheat (Triticumae stivum L.) genotypes (Sids-14 and Giza-171) through field experiments over two consecutive seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021). Although, the full recommended dose (FRD) (100% N) showed the highest chlorophyll (Chl) a, b content during tillering stage, grains quality (NPK-uptake, protein%), and wheat yield components in both genotypes. The integrated inoculation of cyanobacteria and yeast with 50% N, 75% N-fertilization enhanced wheat growth characteristic (Chl a,b) and upgraded soil microbial community (nitrogenase activity and CO2 evolution) in Sids-14 and Giza-171. Cy combined with Y and partial N-fertilization levels enhanced NPK-uptake Kg/fed and protein% in wheat grains in the two wheat genotypes. Moreover, this combination recorded a wheat yield components (plant height, number of spikes/m2, number of grains/spike, 1000 grains wt (gm) and grains yield (tonne/fed) insignificantly different from those obtained by FRD in wheat cultivation.

Conclusion

The integrated application of cyanobacteria with yeast and 50% N or 75% N-fertilization improved soil fertility index and promoted NPK- uptake, protein% and wheat yield components, showing comparable values to conventional chemical fertilization. Cyanobacteria combined with yeast inoculation had socio-economic benefits as  it can save about 25–50% of the required mineral nitrogen fertilizers for wheat crop production.

Distinct Microbial Community of Phyllosphere Associated with Five Tropical Plants on Yongxing Island, South China Sea

The surfaces of a leaf are unique and wide habitats for a microbial community. These microorganisms play a key role in plant growth and adaptation to adverse conditions, such as producing growth factors to promote plant growth and inhibiting pathogens to protect host plants. The composition of microbial communities very greatly amongst different plant species, yet there is little data on the composition of the microbiome of the host plants on the coral island in the South China Sea. In this study, we investigated the abundances and members of a major microbial community (fungi, bacteria, and diazotrophs) on the leaves of five dominant plant species (Ipomoea pes-caprae, Wedelia chinensis, Scaevola sericea, Cocos nucifera, and Sesuvium portulacastrum) on the island using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and high-throughput amplicon sequencing. Quantitative PCR results showed that fungi and bacteria were ubiquitous and variable among different host plants. Scaevola sericea showed the lowest absolute abundance and highest diversity of fungi and bacteria, while Cocos nucifera had the lowest abundance and the highest diversity of diazotrophs compare to the other four plants. There was a small proportion of shared microorganisms among the five different plants, while unique fungi, bacteria and diazotrophs were significantly enriched for different host plant species in this study (p < 0.05). Some of the most abundant organisms found in the communities of these different host plants are involved in important biogeochemical cycles that can benefit their host, including carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Biological activity of microalgae can be enhanced by manipulating the cultivation temperature and irradiance

The escalating levels of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria and the side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs in use forced the efforts of scientists to search for natural antimicrobial and anticancer substances with novel structures and unique mechanism of action. Focusing on bioproducts, recent trends in drug research have shown that microalgae (including the cyanobacteria) are promising organisms to furnish novel and safer biologically active compounds. Many microalgal metabolites have been found to possess potent antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer and antiinflammatory activities, as well as antioxidant, enzyme inhibiting and immunostimulating properties. In this paper, the studies on the biological activity of microalgae associated with potential medical and pharmaceutical applications are briefly presented. Attention is focused on the impact of cultivation temperature, irradiance and growth stage on the biomass accumulation, activity and pathways of cell metabolism and the possibilities of using these variable factors to increase the diversity and quantity of biologically active substances synthesized by microalgae.
