Socially Assistive Robots for Parkinson's Disease: Needs, Attitudes and Specific Applications as Identified by Healthcare Professionals

To explore how socially assistive robots (SARs) may assist the specific needs of individuals with Parkinson's disease (IwPD), we conducted three focus groups with 12 clinicians who treat IwPD. We present a thematic analysis of their perceptions of the needs of the patients, and their own expectations, perceived advantages, disadvantages and concerns regarding the use of SARs for IwPD. Clinicians were positive towards using SARs for IwPD, if used in the patient's home, for motor, communication, emotional, and cognitive needs, especially for practice and for help with activities of daily living. They were concerned that a SAR might be used to replace clinicians’ work, and stressed it should only augment the clinicians’ work. They thought a SAR may relieve some of the burden experienced by informal caregivers, and identified specific applications for SARs for PD. We asked 18 stakeholders (nine IwPD, nine family members) to rate their level of agreement with the clinicians’ statements. The greatest divergence between their views and those of the clinicians was on the topic of using a SAR as a companion, or as a feeding assistant, to which they objected. This work may be used as a basis for future studies designing SARs for IwPD.

A Survey on Recent Advances in Social Robotics

Over decades, social robotics has evolved as a concept that presently covers different areas of application, and interacts with different domains in technology, education, medicine and others. Today, it is possible to envision social robots in tasks that were not expected years ago, and that is not only due to the evolution of social robots, but also to the evolution of the vision humans have for them. This survey addresses recent advances in social robotics from different perspectives. Different contexts and areas of application of social robots are addressed, as well as modalities of interaction with humans. Different robotic platforms used in social contexts are shown and discussed. Relationships of social robotics with advances in other technological areas are surveyed, and methods and metrics used for the human evaluation of the interaction with robots are presented. The future of social robotics is also envisioned based on surveyed works and from different points of view.

Assessing the Impact of an Original Soft Communicative Robot in a Nursing Home in Japan: Will Softness or Conversations Bring more Smiles to Older People?

It has been reported that robotics-aided care can contribute to enhancing older people's social participation and quality of life in nursing homes, while simultaneously reducing the burden on care professionals at nighttime. Due to increasing demand for social care and the relative workforce shortage, it is likely that a greater number and variety of robots will be introduced and implemented in the future. While the benefits of applying robots and assistive technologies are recognized, the current limitations and weaknesses have also been identified. One of these is the difficulty associated with a user-centered design, involving older adults with impaired cognitive and sensory abilities in nursing homes. In order to overcome this challenge, a project was carried out to develop a soft and compact bedside communication robot with an input/output device, connected to existing technologies (e.g. monitoring camera, biological sensor). Drawing on the principle of gemba (deference to frontline professionals' experience, expertise and skills), users' feedback was reflected in the iterative steps of robot development. The original soft and communicative robot was introduced and its effectiveness was tested by measuring older people's reactions and changes in their behaviors and engagement levels. The article reports the development process and results of a small-scale evaluation study, comparing the impact of this original soft-type robot with and without its communicative functions. The human-robot interactions were captured on video, and the analysis revealed that while communicative robots reduced the psychosocial burden on older adults, positive emotional, verbal, visual and behavioral engagement was generated with the help of the non-verbal plush toy.

IoT-Enabled Dual-Arm Motion Capture and Mapping for Telerobotics in Home Care

With the paradigm shift from hospital-centric healthcare to home-centric healthcare in Healthcare 4.0, healthcare robotics has become one of the fastest growing fields of robotics. The combination of robot capabilities with human intelligence, for example, telerobotics for home care, is gradually showing promising potentials. In this paper, the Home-TeleBot system, a generalized IoT-enabled telerobotic architecture designed to support home-centric healthcare system, is proposed. In particular, the implementation of it is realized by integrating human-motion-capture subsystem with robot-control subsystem. The dual-arm cooperative robot, YuMi, imitates human motion captured by a set of wearable inertial motion capture devices to complete tasks. The proposed approach using workspace mapping and path planning of robot manipulators, facilitates telerobot to execute tasks in a natural and human-like way. Based on the constant of proportionality calculated by comparing the human original workspace with the robot original workspace, the workspace mapping is achieved by making assumptions of the distance between end-effectors (human hands, robot's grippers) and shoulders. Additionally, robot manipulators' path is planned by setting virtual obstacles to constrain robot motion, which aims to improve the performance of robot's human-like motion. As a specific example of application, we apply the proposed architecture to a fetching task based on dual-arm motion capture and mapping for telerobotics in home care.

2D Rotation-Angle Measurement Utilizing Least Iterative Region Segmentation

When geometric moments are used to measure the rotation-angle of plane workpieces, the same rotation angle would be obtained with dissimilar poses. Such a case would be shown as an error in an automatic sorting system. Here, we present an improved rotation-angle measurement method based on geometric moments, which is suitable for automatic sorting systems. The method can overcome this limitation to obtain accurate results. The accuracy, speed, and generality of this method are analyzed in detail. In addition, a rotation-angle measurement error model is established to study the effect of camera pose on the rotation-angle measurement accuracy. We find that a rotation-angle measurement error will occur with a non-ideal camera pose. Thus, a correction method is proposed to increase accuracy and reduce the measurement error caused by camera pose. Finally, an automatic sorting system is developed, and experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of our methods. The experimental results show that the rotation angles are accurately obtained and workpieces could be correctly placed by this system.
