Prevalence of Allergic Rhinitis in Children in the Trabzon Province of the Black Sea Region of Turkey

Objective

We aimed to determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children aged 12-15 years who lived in the Trabzon Province, specify possible risk factors, and compare the data obtained with those of the other studies conducted in our country and in other countries.

Methods

First, 1372 students from nine primary schools determined according to the recommendations of Department of Public Health and approval of The Provincial Directorate of Health were screened in their schools with questionnaire forms. Second, students providing the response "yes" to the first and/or second questions in the questionnaire forms were considered as possible allergic rhinitis patients and invited to our clinic. Then, 246 students were subjected to a skin prick test. Data were collected with the evalution of questionnaire and skin prick test results together.

Results

The prevalance of allergic rhinitis in children between 12 and 15 years age was found to be 14.5% in Trabzon. Female gender was found to be a relative a risk factor for allergic rhinitis (p=0.015). The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children whose both parents were smoking was significantly higher than that in children whose only one parent was smoking or both parents were nonsmokers (p=0.0024). In addition, living in an apartment flat (p=0.015) and owing pets (p=0.04) were detected to be other risk factors for allergic rhinitis.

Conclusion

According to our investigations, this is the first prevalence study in Trabzon, which is the largest settlement in the Eastern Black Sea Region. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children was found to be 14.5%. Female gender, smoking habits of the parents, owing pets, and living in an apartment flat are risk factors for allergic rhinitis.

Association between asthma and dental caries in the primary dentition of Mexican children

BACKGROUND

Asthma has been associated with a great number of negative health outcomes. This study was undertaken to detect the association between asthma and dental caries in the primary dentition.

METHODS

Data were obtained from a cohort of 1160 Mexican children aged 4-5 years. We used the questionnaire of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies Diseases in Childhood. Asthma was classified according to parents' reports. Caries indexes were measured as the number of decayed (d), missing (m), and filled (f), teeth (t) (dmft) or surfaces (dmfs). Decayed teeth included initial caries in this study. Adjusted odds ratios (adjusted ORs) were determined for asthma using logistic regression model. Gender, sugary products consumption, and oral hygiene habits were utilized as covariates.

RESULTS

The prevalence of dental caries was 17.9% in the 1160 children. Approximately 226 (19.5%) children were identified with asthma. Among them, 166 (73.5%) presented with symptoms during the day and 60 (26.5%) during the day and night. The prevalence of caries in children with asthma was 19.9%; it was higher in children with nocturnal asthma symptoms than in those with asthma symptoms only during the day. Logistic regression model showed that asthma (adjusted OR=1.24; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]=0.84-1.81) was not associated with caries. A significant association was found between nocturnal asthma symptoms (adjusted OR=1.85; 95% CI=1.00-3.44) and dental caries.

CONCLUSIONS

Asthma is not associated with dental caries. Nocturnal asthma symptoms appear to be associated with dental caries in the primary dentition.

[Allergic mediators in tear from children with seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis]

PURPOSE

To evaluate the concentration of allergic mediators in tears of children with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) and perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC) compared with controls.

METHODS

Twenty children with allergic conjunctivitis (17 SAC, and 3 PAC) and sixteen healthy children were included in this study. Tear samples were collected using a Merocel sponge (Oasis, 0525), and immediately eluted by incubation in elution buffer and subsequent centrifugation at 20,000 rpm for 30 min at 4°C. Concentrations of histamine (HIS), tryptase (TPS), eosinophil chemotactic factor (ECF), major basic protein (MBP), eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), IgE and E-selectin were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Data were compared with the Mann-Whitney U test (P<.05), and multivariate analyses were also performed.

RESULTS

Tear levels of TPS (P=.014), MBP (P=.032), ECP (P=.0041), IgE (P=.014) and EDN (P=.00077) showed significant differences in children with SAC and PAC compared to controls.

CONCLUSION

The simultaneous analyses of allergic mediators in the tears of children with SAC and PAC showed a significant elevated concentration in EDN, ECP and MBP in allergic group and decreased levels in IgE and TPS. Statistical analyses showed a diagnostic accuracy of 94.4% using the eight molecules panel.
