Abstract
In this study, the detection rates of four enteric viruses, Human Astrovirus (HAstVs), Aichivirus (AiVs), Human Adenovirus (HAdVs), and Sapovirus (SaVs) are carried out to assess the virological quality of the treated wastewater. A total of 140 samples was collected from wastewater treatment plant WWTP of Tunis-City. Real-time RT-PCR and conventional RT-PCR results showed high frequencies of detection of the four enteric viruses investigated at the entry and exit of the biological activated sludge procedure and a significant reduction in viral titers after tertiary treatment with UV-C254 irradiation. These results revealed the ineffectiveness of the biological activated sludge treatment in removing viruses and the poor quality of the treated wastewater intended for recycling, agricultural reuse, and safe discharge into the natural environment. The UV-C254 irradiation, selected while considering the non-release of known disinfection by-products because of eventual reactions with the large organic and mineral load commonly present in the wastewater.

Abstract
High pressure processing (HPP) is a powerful non-thermal method for inactivating pathogens. Human norovirus and genetically-related caliciviruses are moderately sensitive to temperatures above 0 °C with >400 MPa (MPa) or higher required to inactivate multiple logs of virus. Sensitivity of murine norovirus (MNV) and Tulane virus (TV) to ice phase transitions was evaluated using ultra low temperature HPP. Identical samples containing MNV or TV were either equilibrated to +1.5 °C (thawed) or -40 °C (frozen) 24 h prior to pressurization. All samples (thawed and frozen) were then placed in a pre-chilled chamber which was then rapidly filled with -40 °C chamber fluid. Samples were immediately pressurized for 5 min at 200, 250 or 300 MPa. Controls were not pressurized. For samples that were thawed and then pressurized in 40 °C chamber fluid, the MNV average log reduction at 200 MPa was 4.4, while >6.1 log reduction (non-detectable) was achieved at 250 and 300 MPa. TV samples averaged 2.3, 5 and 4.3 log reduction at 200, 250, and 300 MPa respectively. For samples that were frozen and then pressurized in 40 °C chamber fluid, the MNV average log reductions were 2.3, 3.2 and 4.2 at 200 MPa, 250 MPa and 300 MPa, respectively, while TV samples averaged 0.81, 2.3 and 1.7 log reductions at 200, 250, and 300 MPa, respectively. Inactivation of TV within oysters at these pressures was also demonstrated. Overall, results indicate that in addition to enhancing inactivation of norovirus surrogates compared to higher temperatures, ultra-cold HPP performed on thawed samples especially enhances inactivation.

Abstract
The European Commission requested EFSA to assess if different thermal processes achieve a 5 log10 reduction in Enterococcus faecalis or Salmonella Senftenberg (775W) and (if relevant) a 3 log10 reduction in thermoresistant viruses (e.g. Parvovirus) as well as if different chemical processes achieve a 3 log10 reduction of eggs of Ascaris sp., in eight groups of Category 2 and 3 derived products and animal by-products (ABP). These included (1) ash derived from incineration, co-incineration and combustion; (2) glycerine derived from the production of biodiesel and renewable fuels; (3) other materials derived from the production of biodiesel and renewable fuels; (4) hides and skins; (5) wool and hair; (6) feathers and down; (7) pig bristles; and (8) horns, horn products, hooves and hoof products. Data on the presence of viral hazards and on thermal and chemical inactivation of the targeted indicator microorganisms and biological hazards under relevant processing conditions were extracted via extensive literature searches. The evidence was assessed via expert knowledge elicitation. The certainty that the required log10 reductions in the most resistant indicator microorganisms or biological hazards will be achieved for each of the eight groups of materials mentioned above by the thermal and/or chemical processes was (1) 99-100% for the two processes assessed; (2) 98-100% in Category 2 ABP, at least 90-99% in Category 3 ABP; (3) 90-99% in Category 2 ABP; at least 66-90% in Category 3 ABP; (4) 10-66% and 33-66%; (5) 1-33% and 10-50%; (6) 66-90%; (7) 33-66% and 50-95%; (8) 66-95%, respectively. Data generation on the occurrence and reduction of biological hazards by thermal and/or chemical methods in these materials and on the characterisation of the usage pathways of ABP as organic fertilisers/soil improvers is recommended.

Abstract
Porcine kobuviruses are widely distributed in swine, but the clinical significance of these viruses remains unclear, since they have been associated with both diarrheic and healthy pigs. In addition, there is a paucity of data on Kobuvirus prevalence in Canadian pig herds. In this study, a total of 181 diarrheic and healthy piglets were monitored and sampled on four occasions, intended to represent the different stages of production. The piglets were sampled at the nursing farms (birth to weaning stage), at the nursery farms (post-weaning stage), and at finishing farms (at the beginning and the end of the fattening stage). Fecal and environmental samples were collected during each life stage. Following viral extraction, Kobuvirus detection by RT-PCR was conducted, and positive samples were sequenced. During the late-nursing stage (6-21 days old), piglets with diarrhea shed more Kobuvirus than healthy individuals. Piglets shed more Kobuvirus during the post-weaning stage (nursery farms) than during any of the other life stages. This was evidenced in individual samples as well as in environmental samples. Over 97% of the sampled piglets shed Kobuvirus at least once in their lifetime. All piglets shedding a Kobuvirus strain or mix of strains at the nursing stage did not appear to shed another porcine kobuvirus strain at a later life stage. Overall, our findings throw light on Kobuvirus shedding dynamics and their potential role in neonatal diarrhea at the nursing stage, which appears to be the point of entry for kobuviruses into swine production systems.

Abstract
Enteric viruses are released in important quantities into the environment where they can persist for a very long time. At very low doses, they can cause human gastroenteritis, and are responsible for a substantial number of waterborne diseases. The aims of this study were multiple: firstly, to study the circulation of Aichi viruses (AiV) in wastewater sampled at the scale of a pilot wastewater treatment plant; secondly, to evaluate the performance of two wastewater treatment procedures, as natural oxidizing lagoons and rotating Biodisks, concerning the AiV removal; and finally, to determine the different type of AiV genotype found during this study. Hence, the pilot wastewater treatment plant is principally irrigated by the wastewater of three neighbouring clinics. Wastewater samples were collected during 2011 from the two lines of biological treatment procedures. AiV detection in wastewater were achieved using the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) technique, and the identification of AiV genotype was realized by the direct sequencing of PCR products. The result revealed that AiV strains were identified in 50% (n = 51) of the wastewater samples. A significant increase of the AiV detection frequency was registered from upstream to downstream of the five ponds constituting the natural oxidizing lagoon process, and at the exit of the rotating Biodisks procedure. All detected AiV strains showed the highest nucleotide sequence identity to genotype B that has been recently observed in patients in Asia. This finding represented the first Tunisian survey that revealed and mentioned the first detection of AiV genotype B in sewage and by the same argued for a noticeable resistance or survival of this type of virus in the two lines of treatment considered.

Abstract
Rotavirus (RV) is the major etiological agent of acute gastroenteritis in infants worldwide. Although high-pressure processing (HPP) is a popular method to inactivate enteric pathogens in food, the sensitivity of different virus strains within same species and serotype to HPP is variable. This study aimed to compare the barosensitivities of seven RV strains derived from four serotypes (serotype G1, strains Wa, Ku, and K8; serotype G2, strain S2; serotype G3, strains SA-11 and YO; and serotype G4, strain ST3) following high-pressure treatment. RV strains showed various responses to HPP based on the initial temperature and had different inactivation profiles. Ku, K8, S2, SA-11, YO, and ST3 showed enhanced inactivation at 4°C compared to 20°C. In contrast, strain Wa was not significantly impacted by the initial treatment temperature. Within serotype G1, strain Wa was significantly (P < 0.05) more resistant to HPP than strains Ku and K8. Overall, the resistance of the human RV strains to HPP at 4°C can be ranked as Wa > Ku = K8 > S2 > YO > ST3, and in terms of serotype the ranking is G1 > G2 > G3 > G4. In addition, pressure treatment of 400 MPa for 2 min was sufficient to eliminate the Wa strain, the most pressure-resistant RV, from oyster tissues. HPP disrupted virion structure but did not degrade viral protein or RNA, providing insight into the mechanism of viral inactivation by HPP. In conclusion, HPP is capable of inactivating RV at commercially acceptable pressures, and the efficacy of inactivation is strain dependent.

Abstract
Aichi virus 1 (AiV-1), belonging to the genus Kobuvirus in the family Picornaviridae, has been proposed as a causative agent of human gastroenteritis potentially transmitted by fecal-oral routes through contaminated food or water. AiV-1 is globally distributed and has been detected in various types of environmental samples, such as sewage, river water, groundwater, and shellfish. Recent environmental studies revealed that this virus could be detected in higher frequency and greater abundance than other human enteric viruses. These findings suggest that AiV-1 could potentially be an appropriate indicator of viral contamination in the environment because of its high prevalence in water environments as well as structural and genetic similarity with some of the other important enteric viruses. Further studies on the occurrence and fate of AiV-1 in environments, even in combination with clinical studies of many regions, are needed for a better understanding of their epidemiology, temporal and geographical distribution, environmental stability, and potential health risks to humans.

Abstract
Bivalve shellfish readily bioconcentrate pathogenic microbes and substance, such as algal and dinoflagulate toxins, fecal viruses and bacteria, and naturally present vibrio bacteria. High pressure processing (HPP) is currently used as an intervention for Vibrio vulnificus bacteria within molluscan shellfish and its potential to inactivate food-borne viruses and bacteria are discussed. Mechanisms of action of high pressure against bacteria and viruses, as well as how time of pressure application, pressure levels, and pre-pressurization temperature influence inactivation are described. Matrix influences such as ionic strength are noted as important additional considerations. The potential of HPP to influence spoilage and enhance shelf-life of shucked shellfish is also discussed.
