Abstract
Our present knowledge about the efficacy of tea consumption in improving age-related cognitive disorders is incomplete since previous epidemiological studies provide inconsistent evidence. This unified systematic review and meta-analysis based on updated epidemiological cohort studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evidence aimed to overcome the limitations of previous reviews by examining the efficacy of distinct types of tea consumption. PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE were searched up to May 20, 2022, and 23 cohorts and 12 cross-sectional studies were included. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to obtain pooled RRs or mean differences with 95% CIs. The pooled RRs of the highest versus lowest tea consumption categories were 0.81 (95% CIs: 0.75-0.88) and 0.69 (95% CIs: 0.61-0.77), respectively. The pooled mean difference of four included RCTs revealed a beneficial effect of tea on cognitive dysfunction (MMSE ES: 1.03; 95% CI, 0.14-1.92). Subgroup analyses further demonstrated that green and black tea intake was associated with a lower risk of cognitive disorders in eastern countries, especially in women. The evidence quality was generally low to moderate. The present review provides insight into whether habitual tea consumption can be an effective approach against age-related neurodegenerative cognitive disorders and summarizes potential mechanisms based on currently published literature.

Abstract
Background Previous studies show that the consumption of tea is associated with several beneficial outcomes for brain health, but there is little data among the elderly in China. Objective The objective was to explore the longitudinal relationship between tea consumption and the risk of cognitive decline. Methods The current data was obtained from the China Longitudinal Aging Study (CLAS), and a total of 3,246 residents aged 60 years and above were recruited in this study. Some of them (N = 111) underwent a standard T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), from which the volumes of the corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampus were calculated, and detailed tea consumption information was obtained through a standardized questionnaire at baseline. The cognitive diagnosis of each participant was made by attending psychiatrists at baseline and follow-up. Their overall cognitive function was assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), while their associative learning ability was assessed by an associative learning test (ALT). Finally, 1,545 elderly with normal cognitive function completed the baseline and follow-up assessment and were included in the final study. Results After controlling gender, education, smoking, take exercise and hobbies, we found that the elderly with tea consumption habits had a lower incidence rate of cognitive decline (p = 0.002, OR = 0.604, 95%CI:0.437~0.836) and tea consumption was negatively correlated with the change scores of MoCA (r = -0.056, p = 0.029). What's more, the CC_posterior volume of tea drinkers was significantly smaller than that of non-tea drinkers, while the baseline ALT score of tea drinkers was significantly higher than that of non-tea drinkers. The results of correlation analysis showed that the CC_posterior volume was significantly correlated with ALT change score (r = -0.319, p = 0.010). Conclusions The habit of tea consumption is associated with less incidence of cognitive impairment among the Chinese elderly, and it may prevent a decline in memory and associative learning by affecting the volume of the posterior corpus callosum.

Abstract
Tea is one of the most popular and widely consumed beverages worldwide, and possesses numerous potential health benefits. Herbal teas are well-known to contain an abundance of polyphenol antioxidants and other ingredients, thereby implicating protection and treatment against various ailments, and maintaining overall health in humans, although their mechanisms of action have not yet been fully identified. Autophagy is a conserved mechanism present in organisms that maintains basal cellular homeostasis and is essential in mediating the pathogenesis of several diseases, including cancer, type II diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease. The increasing prevalence of these diseases, which could be attributed to the imbalance in the level of autophagy, presents a considerable challenge in the healthcare industry. Natural medicine stands as an effective, safe, and economical alternative in balancing autophagy and maintaining homeostasis. Tea is a part of the diet for many people, and it could mediate autophagy as well. Here, we aim to provide an updated overview of popular herbal teas’ health-promoting and disease healing properties and in-depth information on their relation to autophagy and its related signaling molecules. The present review sheds more light on the significance of herbal teas in regulating autophagy, thereby improving overall health.

Abstract
We examined the cross-sectional association between mushroom intake and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using data from 663 participants aged 60 and above from the Diet and Healthy Aging (DaHA) study in Singapore. Compared with participants who consumed mushrooms less than once per week, participants who consumed mushrooms >2 portions per week had reduced odds of having MCI (odds ratio = 0.43, 95% CI 0.23-0.78, p = 0.006) and this association was independent of age, gender, education, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, physical activities, and social activities. Our cross-sectional data support the potential role of mushrooms and their bioactive compounds in delaying neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Green tea intake is generally recognized as an effective supplement that promotes mental clarity and cognitive function. These health benefits of green tea have been attributed mainly to its effective component, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Because various catechin derivatives potently enhance these health benefits, we manipulated the extraction process with a high-temperature intervention. High-temperature-processed green tea extract (HTP-GTE) showed an elevated proportion of gallocatechin gallate (GCG) content. To investigate the preventive effects of HTP-GTE on cognitive decline, we found its neuroprotective effects against amyloid β (Aβ)-induced neurotoxicity in neurons and clarified that GCG significantly inhibited Aβ aggregation in vitro. Moreover, we showed that HTP-GTE intake attenuated several cognitive-decline phenotypes in a model mouse of Alzheimer's disease. These beneficial effects of HTP-GTE against cognitive decline were due to the distinctive composition of the extract and suggest the possibility that HTP-GTE supplementation could attenuate cognitive decline of Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
The majority of tea studies have relied on neuropsychological measures, and much fewer on neuroimaging measures, especially for interregional connections. To date, there has been no exploration of the effect of tea on system-level brain networks. We recruited healthy older participants to two groups according to their history of tea drinking frequency and investigated both functional and structural networks to reveal the role of tea drinking on brain organization. The results showed that tea drinking gave rise to the more efficient structural organization, but had no significant beneficial effect on the global functional organization. The suppression of hemispheric asymmetry in the structural connectivity network was observed as a result of tea drinking. We did not observe any significant effects of tea drinking on the hemispheric asymmetry of the functional connectivity network. In addition, functional connectivity strength within the default mode network (DMN) was greater for the tea-drinking group, and coexistence of increasing and decreasing connective strengths was observed in the structural connectivity of the DMN. Our study offers the first evidence of the positive contribution of tea drinking to brain structure and suggests a protective effect on age-related decline in brain organisation.

Abstract
In general, preparations of coffee, teas, and cocoa containing high levels of polyphenols, L-theanine and other bioactive compounds selectively enhance mood and cognition effects of caffeine. This review summarizes the bioactive components of commonly consumed natural caffeine sources (e.g. guayusa, mate and camellia teas, coffee and cocoa) and analyzes the psychopharmacology of constituent phytochemicals: methylxanthines, polyphenols, and L-theanine. Acute and chronic synergistic effects of these compounds on mood and cognition are compared and discussed. Specific sets of constituent compounds such as polyphenols, theobromine and L-theanine appear to enhance mood and cognition effects of caffeine and alleviate negative psychophysiological effects of caffeine. However, more research is needed to identify optimal combinations and ratios of caffeine and phytochemicals for enhancement of cognitive performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is a major public health problem worldwide. It is an important risk factor for other cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and atherosclerosis. PURPOSE There is strong evidence that excess ROS-derived NADPH oxidase (NOX) is an important agent in hypertension. It augments blood pressure in the presence of other pro-hypertensive factors such as angiotensin II (Ang II), an important and potent regulator of cardiovascular NADPH oxidase, activates NOX via AT1 receptors. NADPH oxidase, a multi-subunit complex enzyme, is considered as a key source of ROS production in the vasculature. The activation of this enzyme is needed for assembling Rac-1, p40phox, p47phox and p67phox subunits. Since, hypertensive patients need to control blood pressure for their entire life and because drugs and other chemicals often induce adverse effects, the use of natural phenolic compounds which are less toxic and potentially beneficial may be good avenues of addition research in our understand of the underlying mechanism involved in hypertension. This review focused on several natural phenolic compounds as berberine, thymoquinone, catechin, celastrol, apocynin, resveratrol, curcumin, hesperidine and G-hesperidine, and quercetin which are NOX inhibitors. In addition, structure activity relationship of these compounds eventually as the most inhibitors was discussed. METHODS This comprehensive review is based on pertinent papers by a selective search using relevant keywords that was collected using online search engines and databases such as ScienceDirect, Scopus and PubMed. The literature mainly focusing on natural products with therapeutic efficacies against hypertension via experimental models both in vitro and in vivo was identified. RESULTS It has been observed that these natural compounds prevent NADPH oxidase expression and ROS production while increasing NO bioavailability. It have been reported that they improve hypertension due to formation of a stable radical with ROS-derived NADPH oxidase and preventing the assembly of NOX subunites. CONCLUSION It is clear that natural phenolic compounds have some potential inhibitory effect on NADPH oxidase activity. In comparison to other phenolic plant compounds, the structural variability of the flavonoids should off different impacts on oxidative stress in hypertension including inhibition of nadph oxidase and direct scavenging of free radicals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between tea consumption and cognitive impairment (CoI). METHODS 4579 adults (≥60 years) from the Weitang Geratric Diseases Study were assessed for characteristics of tea consumption and cognitive function by administering questionnaires and the Abbreviated Mental Test (AMT), respectively. We divided the subjects into normal cognitive function group (AMT score ≥8) and CoI group (AMT score ≤7). The association between tea consumption and risk of CoI was determined by logistic regression models. RESULTS The least-squared means of the AMT scores for the subjects who seldom consumed tea were less favorable than those who habitually consumed tea. An inverse association was found between tea consumption (of any type) and prevalence of CoI (odds ratio = 0.74, 95% confidence interval = 0.57-0.98, P = 0.032). Interestingly, the protective correlation of tea was more obvious in never smokers (odds ratio = 0.63), but vanished in current/former smokers (odds ratio = 1.10). In never smokers, frequency of tea consumption was significantly associated with CoI (P for trend = 0.010). CONCLUSION Habitual tea consumption is suggested to be associated with a decreased risk of CoI among elders in Suzhou, and a higher frequency of tea consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of CoI among never smokers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of a combination of omega 3 essential fatty acids, green tea catechins, and ginsenosides on cognition and brain functioning in healthy older adults. DESIGN Double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design randomized controlled trial with 26-day intervention phases and a 30-day washout period. SETTING The Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. PARTICIPANTS Ten independently-living, cognitively-healthy older adults (mean age: 67.3 + 2.01 years). INTERVENTION Daily consumption of an investigational product (trade name "Cerbella TM") consisting of an emulsified liquid combination of standardized fish oil, panax ginseng extract, and green tea catechins in a flavored base of lecithin phospholipids optimized to maximize bioavailability of the active ingredients. MEASUREMENTS Before and after supplementation with the investigational product or placebo, participants completed cognitive tests including the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), Stroop test, Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Immediate and Delayed Recall tests, as well as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a standard cognitive task switching paradigm. RESULTS Performance on the MMSE, Stroop test, and DSST increased significantly over one month of supplementation with the investigational product (one-sample t tests, p<.05) although differences between these changes and corresponding changes during supplementation with placebo were not significant (two-sample t tests, p>.05). During supplementation with the investigational product, brain activation during task performance increased significantly more than during supplementation with placebo in brain regions known to be activated by this task (anterior and posterior cingulate cortex). Functional connectivity during task execution between task regions (middle frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate cortex) increased significantly during supplementation with the investigational product, relative to placebo. Functional connectivity during rest between task regions (precentral gyrus and middle frontal gyrus) and default mode network regions (medial frontal gyrus and precuneus) decreased during supplementation with the investigational product relative to placebo, suggesting greater segregation of task and rest related brain activity. CONCLUSION One-month supplementation with a combination of omega 3 essential fatty acids, green tea catechins, and ginsenosides was associated with suggestive changes in cognitive functioning as well as modification of brain activation and brain functional connectivity in cognitively healthy older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the effects of green tea extract on working memory in healthy younger (21 - 29 y) and older (50 - 63 y) women. DESIGN A single-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design was used. SETTING A university laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Twenty non-smoking Caucasian women were recruited in the younger (10) and older (10) age group. INTERVENTION Subjects received 5.4 g green tea extract (at least 45% epigallocatechin-3-gallate) or placebo (cornstarch) within a 24-hour period. MEASUREMENTS Working memory was measured by reading span and N-back task paradigm. Blood sample (20 mL) was collected and measured for plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TEAC) concentration. A 24-hour recall was conducted for each treatment period to ensure similar dietary patterns. RESULTS Green tea extract significantly improved reading span performance in older women, indicated by higher absolute and partial scores of reading span. No significant changes were observed in the younger group. N-back latencies and accuracies were not significantly different after green tea treatment in either age group. Plasma concentration of MDA and TEAC were not different after green tea extract in either group. CONCLUSION Acute supplementation of decaffeinated green tea extract may enhance working memory capacity of women between 50 to 63 years of age. This study provides preliminary evidence that consumption of green tea extract may enhance the cognitive performance in older adults and thus provide potential chemopreventive benefits in this group. The mechanism should be explored in future research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies found that tea consumption was related to a reduction in the risks of some chronic diseases, but limited data are available on bone health. This study aimed to examine the associations of tea consumption with hip bone strength in Chinese women. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING The participants were from the ongoing Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study. This was a cohort study started in 2008. The examination data conducted between June 2010 and December 2013 were used. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1,495 Chinese women aged more than 40 years were included. MEASUREMENTS Tea consumption, socio-demographic information and lifestyle habits were collected by a face-to-face questionnaire. Hip bone mineral density (BMD) and geometric parameters, i.e. cross-sectional area (CSA), section modulus (Z) and buckling ratio (BR), were generated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The associations of tea consumption with bone phenotypes were detected by analysis of covariance and multiple linear regression models after adjusting for age, body mass index, years since menopause, physical activity, dietary-protein intake, dietary-calcium intake, calcium tablet intake, drinking status and smoking status. RESULTS Tea drinkers (n = 732) had approximately 1.9% higher BMD (p < 0.05) and 3.6% lower BR (p < 0.05) than non-tea drinkers (n = 763). The dose-response relationships of BMD, BR or CSA with total tea consumption were identified (p-trend < 0.05). Tea drinking was found to be a significant and independent predictor of BMD (β = 0.068, p < 0.05) or BR (β = -0.079, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Tea consumption was associated with increased bone strength in middle-aged and elderly Chinese women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence supports the neuroprotective effects of bioactive compounds from tea leaves. There are limited data from black tea consumption populations. OBJECTIVE To determine whether black tea consumption is associated with cognitive decline among older men. METHODS We chose to study the association between black tea consumption and cognition using data from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) cohort, which collected information on tea consumption at baseline and has repeatedly assessed cognitive function in 3,844 men aged 65+ years (mean = 72.4 years). We defined tea drinkers as those who drank black tea at least once per week and further grouped them into weekly drinkers and daily drinkers. Cognitive function was assessed at baseline and approximately 7 years later using the Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MSE). Multivariable logistic regression and linear regression models were constructed to assess the association between black tea consumption and risk of fast cognitive decline as a binary variable and change in 3MSE scores as continuous variable. Fast cognitive decline was defined as decline in 3MSE >1.5 standard deviation of mean change score. Models were adjusted for age, education level, and baseline cognitive scores. RESULTS Weekly and daily black tea drinkers were 24.8% and 12.4% of the study cohort, respectively. Fast cognitive decline occurred in 243 (6.3%) participants. Tea consumption was not associated with risk of cognitive decline, nor was tea associated with cognitive decline measured by absolute change in 3MSE scores. CONCLUSIONS There was no association of black tea consumption and cognitive decline among older men in the US.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is prevalent among patients with late life neurocognitive disorders but its role as an independent risk factor is not established. We aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between depression and the incidence of mild neurocognitive disorders (NCD) in a Chinese population. METHODS We analyzed data from 889 community-living Chinese elderly in the Singapore Longitudinal Aging Study (SLAS) cohort. All subjects were cognitively normal at baseline based on their performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Depression was defined as total score of 5 or more on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Incident cases of mild NCD were ascertained at follow up after an average of 45 moths (range: 10-62). Odds ratios (OR) of associations were calculated in logistic regression models that adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS A total of 59 mild NCD cases were identified. Increased risk of mild NCD was observed for subjects who had depressive symptom at baseline (OR=2.56, 95%CI 1.17-5.60) after controlling for age, gender, education, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, APOE genotype and length of follow-up. The interaction between depression and APOE genotype was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION Depressive symptom was independently associated with increased risk of mild NCD among Chinese elderly. Effective management of late life depression may potentially reduce incident cases of NCD in the population.

Abstract
Catechins are polyphenolic phytochemicals with many important physiological activities that play a multifaceted health care function in the human body, especially in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. In this paper, various experimental and clinical studies have revealed the role of catechins in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disorders, and we review the preventive effects of catechins on cardiovascular disease from the following aspects: Regulating lipid metabolism, regulating blood lipid metabolism, vascular endothelial protection, and reducing blood pressure.
