Abstract
This paper introduces superpixels to enhance the detection of skin lesions and to discriminate between melanoma and nevi without false negatives, in dermoscopy images. An improved Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (iSLIC) superpixels algorithm for image segmentation in digital image processing is proposed. The local graph cut method to identify the region of interest (i.e., either the nevi or melanoma lesions) has been adopted. The iSLIC algorithm is then exploited to segment sSPs. iSLIC discards all the SPs belonging to image background based on assigned labels and preserves the segmented skin lesions. A shape and geometric feature extraction task is performed for each segmented SP. The extracted features are fed into six machine learning algorithms such as: random forest, support vector machines, AdaBoost, k-nearest neighbor, decision trees (DT), Gaussian Naïve Bayes and three neural networks. These include Pattern recognition neural network, Feed forward neural network, and 1D Convolutional Neural Network for classification. The method is evaluated on the 7-Point MED-NODE and PAD-UFES-20 datasets and the results have been compared to the state-of-art findings. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method outperforms the compared existing methods in terms of accuracy.

A Hybrid Stacked Restricted Boltzmann Machine with Sobel Directional Patterns for Melanoma Prediction in Colored Skin Images. Diagnostics (Basel) 2023; 13:diagnostics13061104. Abstract
Melanoma, a kind of skin cancer that is very risky, is distinguished by uncontrolled cell multiplication. Melanoma detection is of the utmost significance in clinical practice because of the atypical border structure and the numerous types of tissue it can involve. The identification of melanoma is still a challenging process for color images, despite the fact that numerous approaches have been proposed in the research that has been done. In this research, we present a comprehensive system for the efficient and precise classification of skin lesions. The framework includes preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification modules. Preprocessing with DullRazor eliminates skin-imaging hair artifacts. Next, Fully Connected Neural Network (FCNN) semantic segmentation extracts precise and obvious Regions of Interest (ROIs). We then extract relevant skin image features from ROIs using an enhanced Sobel Directional Pattern (SDP). For skin image analysis, Sobel Directional Pattern outperforms ABCD. Finally, a stacked Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) classifies skin ROIs. Stacked RBMs accurately classify skin melanoma. The experiments have been conducted on five datasets: Pedro Hispano Hospital (PH2), International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC 2016), ISIC 2017, Dermnet, and DermIS, and achieved an accuracy of 99.8%, 96.5%, 95.5%, 87.9%, and 97.6%, respectively. The results show that a stack of Restricted Boltzmann Machines is superior for categorizing skin cancer types using the proposed innovative SDP.

Abstract
The skin is the human body's largest organ and its cancer is considered among the most dangerous kinds of cancer. Various pathological variations in the human body can cause abnormal cell growth due to genetic disorders. These changes in human skin cells are very dangerous. Skin cancer slowly develops over further parts of the body and because of the high mortality rate of skin cancer, early diagnosis is essential. The visual checkup and the manual examination of the skin lesions are very tricky for the determination of skin cancer. Considering these concerns, numerous early recognition approaches have been proposed for skin cancer. With the fast progression in computer-aided diagnosis systems, a variety of deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision approaches were merged for the determination of medical samples and uncommon skin lesion samples. This research provides an extensive literature review of the methodologies, techniques, and approaches applied for the examination of skin lesions to date. This survey includes preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, selection, and classification approaches for skin cancer recognition. The results of these approaches are very impressive but still, some challenges occur in the analysis of skin lesions because of complex and rare features. Hence, the main objective is to examine the existing techniques utilized in the discovery of skin cancer by finding the obstacle that helps researchers contribute to future research.

Abstract
The high precedence of epidemiological examination of skin lesions necessitated the well-performing efficient classification and segmentation models. In the past two decades, various algorithms, especially machine/deep learning-based methods, replicated the classical visual examination to accomplish the above-mentioned tasks. These automated streams of models demand evident lesions with less background and noise affecting the region of interest. However, even after the proposal of these advanced techniques, there are gaps in achieving the efficacy of matter. Recently, many preprocessors proposed to enhance the contrast of lesions, which further aided the skin lesion segmentation and classification tasks. Metaheuristics are the methods used to support the search space optimisation problems. We propose a novel Hybrid Metaheuristic Differential Evolution-Bat Algorithm (DE-BA), which estimates parameters used in the brightness preserving contrast stretching transformation function. For extensive experimentation we tested our proposed algorithm on various publicly available databases like ISIC 2016, 2017, 2018 and PH2, and validated the proposed model with some state-of-the-art already existing segmentation models. The tabular and visual comparison of the results concluded that DE-BA as a preprocessor positively enhances the segmentation results.

Abstract
AbstractAgriculture plays a critical role in the economy of several countries, by providing the main sources of income, employment, and food to their rural population. However, in recent years, it has been observed that plants and fruits are widely damaged by different diseases which cause a huge loss to the farmers, although this loss can be minimized by detecting plants’ diseases at their earlier stages using pattern recognition (PR) and machine learning (ML) techniques. In this article, an automated system is proposed for the identification and recognition of fruit diseases. Our approach is distinctive in a way, it overcomes the challenges like convex edges, inconsistency between colors, irregularity, visibility, scale, and origin. The proposed approach incorporates five primary steps including preprocessing,Standard instruction requires city and country for affiliations. Hence, please check if the provided information for each affiliation with missing data is correct and amend if deemed necessary. disease identification through segmentation, feature extraction and fusion, feature selection, and classification. The infection regions are extracted using the proposed adaptive and quartile deviation-based segmentation approach and fused resultant binary images by employing the weighted coefficient of correlation (CoC). Then the most appropriate features are selected using a novel framework of entropy and rank-based correlation (EaRbC). Finally, selected features are classified using multi-class support vector machine (MC-SCM). A PlantVillage dataset is utilized for the evaluation of the proposed system to achieving an average segmentation and classification accuracy of 93.74% and 97.7%, respectively. From the set of statistical measure, we sincerely believe that our proposed method outperforms existing method with greater accuracy.

Abstract
Pulmonary nodule is one of the lung diseases and its early diagnosis and treatment are essential to cure the patient. This paper introduces a deep learning framework to support the automated detection of lung nodules in computed tomography (CT) images. The proposed framework employs VGG-SegNet supported nodule mining and pre-trained DL-based classification to support automated lung nodule detection. The classification of lung CT images is implemented using the attained deep features, and then these features are serially concatenated with the handcrafted features, such as the Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Local-Binary-Pattern (LBP) and Pyramid Histogram of Oriented Gradients (PHOG) to enhance the disease detection accuracy. The images used for experiments are collected from the LIDC-IDRI and Lung-PET-CT-Dx datasets. The experimental results attained show that the VGG19 architecture with concatenated deep and handcrafted features can achieve an accuracy of 97.83% with the SVM-RBF classifier.

Abstract
Manual diagnosis of skin cancer is time-consuming and expensive; therefore, it is essential to develop automated diagnostics methods with the ability to classify multiclass skin lesions with greater accuracy. We propose a fully automated approach for multiclass skin lesion segmentation and classification by using the most discriminant deep features. First, the input images are initially enhanced using local color-controlled histogram intensity values (LCcHIV). Next, saliency is estimated using a novel Deep Saliency Segmentation method, which uses a custom convolutional neural network (CNN) of ten layers. The generated heat map is converted into a binary image using a thresholding function. Next, the segmented color lesion images are used for feature extraction by a deep pre-trained CNN model. To avoid the curse of dimensionality, we implement an improved moth flame optimization (IMFO) algorithm to select the most discriminant features. The resultant features are fused using a multiset maximum correlation analysis (MMCA) and classified using the Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) classifier. The segmentation performance of the proposed methodology is analyzed on ISBI 2016, ISBI 2017, ISIC 2018, and PH2 datasets, achieving an accuracy of 95.38%, 95.79%, 92.69%, and 98.70%, respectively. The classification performance is evaluated on the HAM10000 dataset and achieved an accuracy of 90.67%. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed methods, we present a comparison with the state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract
Since the emergence of COVID-19, thousands of people undergo chest X-ray and computed tomography scan for its screening on everyday basis. This has increased the workload on radiologists, and a number of cases are in backlog. This is not only the case for COVID-19, but for the other abnormalities needing radiological diagnosis as well. In this work, we present an automated technique for rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 on computed tomography images. The proposed technique consists of four primary steps: (1) data collection and normalization, (2) extraction of the relevant features, (3) selection of the most optimal features and (4) feature classification. In the data collection step, we collect data for several patients from a public domain website, and perform preprocessing, which includes image resizing. In the successive step, we apply discrete wavelet transform and extended segmentation-based fractal texture analysis methods for extracting the relevant features. This is followed by application of an entropy controlled genetic algorithm for selection of the best features from each feature type, which are combined using a serial approach. In the final phase, the best features are subjected to various classifiers for the diagnosis. The proposed framework, when augmented with the Naive Bayes classifier, yields the best accuracy of 92.6%. The simulation results are supported by a detailed statistical analysis as a proof of concept.

Abstract
Recent facts and figures published in various studies in the US show that approximately
27,510 new cases of gastric infections are diagnosed. Furthermore, it has also been reported that
the mortality rate is quite high in diagnosed cases. The early detection of these infections can save
precious human lives. As the manual process of these infections is time-consuming and expensive,
therefore automated Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems are required which helps the endoscopy
specialists in their clinics. Generally, an automated method of gastric infection detections
using Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) is comprised of the following steps such as contrast preprocessing,
feature extraction, segmentation of infected regions, and classification into their relevant
categories. These steps consist of various challenges that reduce the detection and recognition
accuracy as well as increase the computation time. In this review, authors have focused on the importance
of WCE in medical imaging, the role of endoscopy for bleeding-related infections, and
the scope of endoscopy. Further, the general steps and highlighting the importance of each step
have been presented. A detailed discussion and future directions have been provided at the end.

Abstract
Abstract
Melanoma is considered to be one of the deadliest skin cancer types, whose occurring frequency elevated in the last few years; its earlier diagnosis, however, significantly increases the chances of patients’ survival. In the quest for the same, a few computer based methods, capable of diagnosing the skin lesion at initial stages, have been recently proposed. Despite some success, however, margin exists, due to which the machine learning community still considers this an outstanding research challenge. In this work, we come up with a novel framework for skin lesion classification, which integrates deep features information to generate most discriminant feature vector, with an advantage of preserving the original feature space. We utilize recent deep models for feature extraction, and by taking advantage of transfer learning. Initially, the dermoscopic images are segmented, and the lesion region is extracted, which is later subjected to retrain the selected deep models to generate fused feature vectors. In the second phase, a framework for most discriminant feature selection and dimensionality reduction is proposed, entropy-controlled neighborhood component analysis (ECNCA). This hierarchical framework optimizes fused features by selecting the principle components and extricating the redundant and irrelevant data. The effectiveness of our design is validated on four benchmark dermoscopic datasets; PH2, ISIC MSK, ISIC UDA, and ISBI-2017. To authenticate the proposed method, a fair comparison with the existing techniques is also provided. The simulation results clearly show that the proposed design is accurate enough to categorize the skin lesion with 98.8%, 99.2% and 97.1% and 95.9% accuracy with the selected classifiers on all four datasets, and by utilizing less than 3% features.

Abstract
Doctor utilizes various kinds of clinical technologies like MRI, endoscopy, CT scan, etc., to identify patient's deformity during the review time. Among set of clinical technologies, wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is an advanced procedures used for digestive track malformation. During this complete process, more than 57,000 frames are captured and doctors need to examine a complete video frame by frame which is a tedious task even for an experienced gastrologist. In this article, a novel computerized automated method is proposed for the classification of abdominal infections of gastrointestinal track from WCE images. Three core steps of the suggested system belong to the category of segmentation, deep features extraction and fusion followed by robust features selection. The ulcer abnormalities from WCE videos are initially extracted through a proposed color features based low level and high-level saliency (CFbLHS) estimation method. Later, DenseNet CNN model is utilized and through transfer learning (TL) features are computed prior to feature optimization using Kapur's entropy. A parallel fusion methodology is opted for the selection of maximum feature value (PMFV). For feature selection, Tsallis entropy is calculated later sorted into descending order. Finally, top 50% high ranked features are selected for classification using multilayered feedforward neural network classifier for recognition. Simulation is performed on collected WCE dataset and achieved maximum accuracy of 99.5% in 21.15 s.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in the last two decades. It is either diagnosed malignant or benign - depending upon the severity of the infection and the current stage. The conventional methods require a detailed physical inspection by an expert dermatologist, which is time-consuming and imprecise. Therefore, several computer vision methods are introduced lately, which are cost-effective and somewhat accurate. In this work, we propose a new automated approach for skin lesion detection and recognition using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). The proposed cascaded design incorporates three fundamental steps including; a) contrast enhancement through fast local Laplacian filtering (FlLpF) along HSV color transformation; b) lesion boundary extraction using color CNN approach by following XOR operation; c) in-depth features extraction by applying transfer learning using Inception V3 model prior to feature fusion using hamming distance (HD) approach. An entropy controlled feature selection method is also introduced for the selection of the most discriminant features. The proposed method is tested on PH2 and ISIC 2017 datasets, whereas the recognition phase is validated on PH2, ISBI 2016, and ISBI 2017 datasets. From the results, it is concluded that the proposed method outperforms several existing methods and attained accuracy 98.4% on PH2 dataset, 95.1% on ISBI dataset and 94.8% on ISBI 2017 dataset.
