Abstract
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a biocompatible fibrin matrix that acts as a resorbable membrane, collecting platelet cytokines, growth factors, and cells and releasing them. It is easily extracted from blood. Many dentists use PRF, a concentrated growth factor solution, to treat various lesions and regenerate tooth and oral tissues. This research examines the pros, cons, and suggestions of using PRF in dentistry.

Abstract
Ulcerative keratitis is a common disease in horses which may cause blindness. To prevent secondary bacterial and fungal infections and promote quick re-growth of the epithelial layer, different treatment approaches have been employed. This study aimed to examine the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) gel on the healing process of experimentally induced corneal ulcers in donkeys. Nine healthy adult donkeys were used for the study. The donkeys were divided into two groups: the control group, where no medication was applied to the corneal ulcer, and the A-PRF gel group, where A-PRF gel was applied once a day on specific days after ulcer induction. The healing process was evaluated through various examinations and analyses. The results demonstrated that the A-PRF gel group showed significant improvement in the corneal ulcer area, with epithelial and stromal regeneration. At day 35, about 60% of the A-PRF group showed negative fluorescein uptake. Additionally, fewer complications were observed during the healing process compared to the control group. In conclusion, A-PRF gel is an important and safe therapeutic option for controlling ocular surface infection and promoting corneal healing. We recommend using A-PRF gel as an alternative approach, avoiding eyelid suturing, and minimizing corneal irritation.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a chronic multifactorial condition that affects the skeletal system, leading to the deterioration of bone microstructure and an increased risk of bone fracture. Platelet-derived biomaterials (PDBs), so-called platelet concentrates, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), have shown potential for improving bone healing by addressing microstructural impairment. While the administration of platelet concentrates has yielded positive results in bone regeneration, the optimal method for its administration in the clinical setting is still debatable. This comprehensive review aims to explore the systemic and local use of PRP/PRF for treating various bone defects and acute fractures in patients with osteoporosis. Furthermore, combining PRP/PRF with stem cells or osteoinductive and osteoconductive biomaterials has shown promise in restoring bone microstructural properties, treating bony defects, and improving implant osseointegration in osteoporotic animal models. Here, reviewing the results of in vitro and in vivo studies, this comprehensive evaluation provides a detailed mechanism for how platelet concentrates may support the healing process of osteoporotic bone fractures.

Abstract
AIM This study investigated the regenerative efficacy of leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) on colon anastomotic healing in rabbits. MAIN METHODS Thirty-six healthy male white New Zealand rabbits were subjected to complete transactions of the ascending colon. The rabbits were equally divided into two groups: the control group, where the transected colon ends were anastomosed by a simple interrupted suture pattern, and the L-PRF-treated group, in which L-PRF was wrapped entirely around the anastomotic line. The postoperative acute pain scale was assessed using the Bristol Rabbit Pain Scale before surgery and at each four-hour interval post-operatively. After euthanizing the rabbits, the adhesion degree score, anastomotic bursting pressure, and stenosis degree of the anastomotic colon were assessed, and histopathological examination at the 7th, 14th, and 28th days postoperatively. KEY FINDINGS Rabbits in both groups showed a significant increase in pain scores compared to baseline. Postoperatively, the L-PRF group exhibited significantly lower pain scores, adhesion scores, and stenosis degrees than the control group. However, the anastomotic bursting pressure was significantly higher in the L-PRF group. Re-epithelialization, polymorphonuclear neutrophil infiltration, granulation tissue formation, and collagen deposition scores were improved considerably in the L-PRF group compared to the control group. Immunostaining of growth factor expression was significantly lower in the control than in the L-PRF group. SIGNIFICANCE The L-PRF can augment collagen deposition, re-epithelialize the mucosa, promote angiogenesis, reduce adhesions, and diminish the stenosis degree scores. Therefore, it can be considered a promising aid in healing bowel anastomoses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the outcome of leukocyte-platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) on the rate of maxillary canine retraction and its correlation with the levels of Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and RANKL:OPG in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during comprehensive orthodontic treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Eighteen females who required all 1st premolars extraction for the correction of their class I bimaxillary protrusion malocclusions were included. The L-PRF plugs were placed in the experimental side 1st premolar extraction sockets. Canine retraction was performed by sliding mechanics. Canine retraction was assessed from the maxillary study models prepared just before the extraction (T0) and then at 1 week (T1), 2 weeks (T2), 4 weeks (T3), and 8 weeks (T4) after the 1st premolar extraction and placement of L-PRF plugs. The concentrations of RANKL and OPG in the GCF were evaluated at T0, T1, T2, T3, and T4. RESULTS In experimental sides, the amount of canine retraction was statistically more during the T0-T1, T1-T2, and T2-T3 periods. The mean concentration of RANKL at T1, T2, and T3 was significantly more in the experimental sides. The mean concentration of OPG was significantly less in the experimental sides at T2, T3, and T4. The RANKL:OPG was significantly more in the experimental sides at T1, T2, T3, and T4. No significant correlation was found between amount of canine retraction and concentration of RANKL and OPG and RANKL to OPG ratio in GCF. CONCLUSIONS The L-PRF accelerated the rate of maxillary canine retraction by 0.28 mm over an 8-week period. The L-PRF favored the local osteoclastogenesis by enhancing the RANKL and suppressing the OPG concentrations. There was no significant correlation between the rate of maxillary canine retraction and expression of RANKL, OPG, and RANKL:OPG in GCF. TRIAL REGISTRATION The Clinical Trials Registry of India (Reg. Abstract
The short shelf life of platelet concentrates (PC) of up to 5–7 days leads to higher wastage due to expiry. To address this massive financial burden on the healthcare system, alternative applications for expired PC have emerged in recent years. Engineered nanocarriers functionalized with platelet membranes have shown excellent targeting abilities for tumor cells owing to their platelet membrane proteins. Nevertheless, synthetic drug delivery strategies have significant drawbacks that platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (pEV) can overcome. We investigated, for the first time, the use of pEV as a carrier of the anti-breast cancer drug paclitaxel, considering it as an appealing alternative to improve the therapeutic potential of expired PC. The pEV released during PC storage showed a typical EV size distribution profile (100–300 nm) with a cup-shaped morphology. Paclitaxel-loaded pEV showed significant anti-cancer effects in vitro, as demonstrated by their anti-migratory (>30%), anti-angiogenic (>30%), and anti-invasive (>70%) properties in distinct cells found in the breast tumor microenvironment. We provide evidence for a novel application for expired PC by suggesting that the field of tumor treatment research may be broadened by the use of natural carriers.

Abstract
The present research study assessed the cell viability and cytotoxic effect of mineral tri-oxide aggregate (MTA), Tetric N-Bond Universal bonding agent, Theracal PT (pulpotomy treatment), and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as pulp capping agents on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). The cells were isolated from the pulp tissue of an extracted healthy permanent third molar. After four passages in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium, the primary cells were employed for the investigation. The test materials and untreated cells (negative control) were subjected to an Methylthiazol-diphenyl-tetrazolium (MTT) cytotoxicity assay and assessed at 24-, 48-, and 72-h intervals. The Wilcoxon matched-paired t-test and Kruskal−Wallis analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were applied (p < 0.05). PRF imparted the highest cell viability at 48 h (p < 0.001), followed by MTA, Theracal PT, and Tetric N-Bond. Similarly, PRF had the highest potential to enhance cell proliferation and differentiation (p < 0.001), followed by Theracal PT, MTA, and the bonding agent at the end of 24 h and 72 h, respectively. Finally, PRF sustained the viability of human primary dental pulp stem cells more effectively than Theracal PT and MTA; however, the application of a Tetric N-Bond as a pulp capping agent was ineffective.

Abstract
Leukocyte-platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has been suggested for gap management for immediate implant placement when the distance is greater than 2 mm. However, there remains a paucity in hierarchically designed research to support this application. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of L-PRF on the osseointegration parameters of dental implants placed after conventional osteotomy of surgically created bone defects that simulate post extraction sockets in a canine model after 3, 6, and 12 weeks in vivo. Eighty dental implants (Intra-Lock, Boca Raton, FL) were placed in the radius of 13 beagle dogs. The experiment consisted of 4 groups (n = 20 implants/group): 1) Regular osteotomy (Reg n/L-PRF); 2) Regular osteotomy and implant placement with L-PRF membrane (Reg L-PRF); 3) Wide osteotomy with no gap management performed, where an osteotomy/bony defect (6 mm of diameter and ~5 mm deep) was created to simulate immediate implant placement in post-extraction sockets, and the gap was left for spontaneous healing (Wide nL-PRF); and 4) Wide osteotomy with L-PRF gap management (Wide L-PRF). L-PRF membranes were obtained by blood drawn from each subject and centrifuged at 2700 rpm (408 RCF-clot) for 12 min. In the experimental groups where L-PRF was utilized, the membrane was inserted into the osteotomy site prior to implant placement. Six dogs had implants placed in the radius for 3 weeks; and 7 dogs had implants placed in the left radius for 6 weeks and in the right radius for 12 weeks. At the corresponding experimental time points, samples were harvested, and subjected to histological processing for qualitative and quantitative analyses, via bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone-area-fraction occupancy (BAFO). Qualitative analysis demonstrated increased amounts of bone formation around the implant and within the healing chambers over time for all groups. While comparable histological features were observed for both Reg groups (L-PRF and nL-PRF), the gap management performed in Wide L-PRF group resulted in effective gap filling with improved bone growth in close proximity to the implant surface. Quantitative analyses of BIC and BAFO yielded higher values for both variables at 3 weeks for Wide L-PRF (~38% and ~56% respectively) compared to Wide nL-PRF (~20% for BIC and BAFO) (p < .03). No statistical differences were detected between Wide groups at 6 and 12 weeks, neither between Reg groups, independent of the association with or without the L-PRF membrane at all healing times. L-PRF placed within wide osteotomies, prior to implant placement, resulted in increased early bone formation compared to unfilled wide osteotomies at the early healing time (3 weeks in vivo).

Abstract
Platelets are important for hemostasis and the healing of wounds. In clinical settings, healing cytokines including insulin-like growth factors (IGF), platelet-derived growth factors (PDGF), and transforming growth factors (TGF) are commonly implemented. The regenerative approach in dentistry frequently employs platelet concentrates (PCs) that are “autologous in origin” and have a high concentration of platelets, growth factors, and leukocytes. First-generation PCs is made of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), while second-generation PC is made of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). Both have limitations, so modification protocols and development in PRP and PRF derivatives are required for advancement mechanisms, strength, biodegradability, retention ability in the field of regenerative dentistry, and so on. As third-generation PC, newer genera kinds of PRF, such as advanced-PRF (A-PRF), advanced-PRF+ (A-PRF+), injectable-PRF (i-PRF), and titanium-PRF (T-PRF), were introduced. A-PRF matrices in their solid form were introduced using the low-speed centrifugation concept (LSCC). The applied relative centrifugal force (RCF) for A-PRF is reduced to 208 g as a result of this improved preparation process. A-PRF features a greater number of neutrophil granules in the distal region, especially at the red blood cells-buffer coat (RBC-BC) interface, and the A-PRF clot has a more porosity-like structure with a bigger interfibrous space than PRF. Since the PRF is in a gel form and is difficult to inject, i-PRF was formulated to address this problem. Compared to the other two protocols, the i-PRF protocol requires far less time, and this is the advantage of this PC. This is because i-PRF just needs the blood components to be separated, which happens within the first two to four minutes. Compared to normal L-PRF, T-PRF creates fibrin that is thicker and more densely woven. Titanium has a higher hemocompatibility than glass, which could lead to greater polymerized fibrin formation. In periodontal regenerative operations, oral surgery, and implant dentistry, PRF and its newer advanced modifications have demonstrated promising results and desirable results in both soft and hard tissue regenerative techniques.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) on post-operative wound healing following strabismus surgery in a rabbit model. METHODS Nine New Zealand white rabbits were involved in the study. One of these nine rabbits was kept in control without having any operation. Both eyes of eight rabbits underwent superior rectus muscle (SRM) resection. After resection of SRM, PRF was applied to SRM of the right eyes. In the left eye, SRM was not wrapped with PRF and served as a control. The rabbits were sacrificed and enucleated 6 weeks after the surgery. Inflammation and vascular proliferation were assessed by staining with haematoxylin-eosin. Scar and fibrosis were examined by the Masson trichrome staining. Immunohistochemical staining was performed for a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). RESULTS There was no significant difference in terms of inflammation (p = 0.535), vascularization (p = 0.602), and fibrosis (p = 0.745) between the eyes. Immunohistochemical staining for VEGF demonstrated no significant difference (p = 0.745). However, significant staining for α-SMA was detected in PRF-treated eyes compared with control eyes (p = 0.037). CONCLUSION Consistent with the hypothesis that PRF facilitates wound healing as a biocatalyst, there was only a significant difference for α-SMA related to myofibroblast activity which is important for wound remodelling. Future comprehensive studies are needed to extend these results.

Abstract
Despite the importance of the proper quality of blood products for safe transfusion, conventional methods for preparation and their preservation, they lack significant stability. Non-metal nanoparticles with particular features may overcome these challenges. This review study for the first time provided a comprehensive vision of the interaction of non-metal nanoparticles with each blood product (red blood cells, platelets and plasma proteins). The findings of this review on the most effective nanoparticle for improving the stability of RBCs indicate that graphene quantum dots and nanodiamonds show compatibility with RBCs. For increasing the stability of platelet products, silica nanoparticles exhibited a suppressive impact on platelet aggregation. Pristine graphene also shows compatibility with platelets. For better stability of plasma products, graphene oxide was indicated to preserve free human serum albumin from thermal shocks at low ionic strength. For increased stability of Factor VIII, mesoporous silica nanoparticles with large pores exhibit the superb quality of recovered proteins. Furthermore, 3.2 nm quantum dots exhibited anticoagulant effects. As the best promising nanoparticles for immunoglobulin stability, graphene quantum dots showed compatibility with γ-globulins. Overall, this review recommends further research on the mentioned nanoparticles as the most potential candidates for enhancing the stability and storage of blood components.

Abstract
Introduction: In many cases, the replanted teeth may undergo resorption or ankyloses. Recent studies show that autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) may improve the outcomes of tooth replantation. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize and critically appraise the currently available literature on the use of APCs before tooth replantation. Methodology: An electronic search was conducted on the following research databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, EMBASE and Scopus. The following medical subject heading (MeSH) keywords used were: ((tooth replantation) OR (replanted tooth) OR (teeth replantation) OR (replanted teeth)) AND ((autologous platelet concentrate) OR (platelet-rich plasma) OR (platelet-rich fibrin) OR (autologous platelet)). The studies’ data was extracted, and the research’ quality was rated using the CARE and ARRIVE protocols. Results: Ten case reports and three animal studies, one cell study and one study, which included both animal and in vitro experiments, were included in this review. In majority of the studies, APCs improved the outcomes of tooth replantation. However, there were various sources of bias in the most of the research, which may have influenced the results. Conclusions: Although majority of the studies indicate that APCs may improve outcomes of tooth replantation, majority of the studies contained numerous sources of bias. Additionally, the sample size of the included subjects is inadequate to predict the clinical efficacy of APCs in management of replanted teeth. Large-scale, multi-center and long-term studies are required to ascertain the efficacy of APCs in improve the outcomes of tooth replantation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Concentrated growth factor (CGF) is particularly gaining acceptance and popularity in regenerative dentistry. Nonetheless, there are no available studies showing its effect against microorganisms of oral cavity particularly in chronic oral disease-induced biofilms. This in vitro research was conducted to determine the antimicrobial effects of CGF against Staphylococcus aureus sp. (S. aureus) and Streptococcus mutans sp. (S. mutans). MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples were obtained from a healthy volunteer. CGF was then prepared using specialized centrifugation equipment (Medifuge, Silfradent, Santa Sofia FC, Italy) and protocol. Antimicrobial activity of the CGF was observed and recorded on standard strains of S. aureus and S. mutans using a well diffusion method to determine the inhibition zone, broth microdilution to determine minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and crystal violet assay for biofilm assessment, with chlorhexidine (CHX) 0.12% used as a positive control. Statistical analysis was then performed using one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey Test post hoc analysis. RESULTS It was observed that there was a presence of clear zones of inhibition around the CGF after 24 hours of incubation. The mean diameter of the inhibition zone was 1.26 ± 0.12 nm and 1.20 ± 0.06 nm for S. aureus and S. mutans, respectively, with significance difference (p < 0.05) against the control group CHX 0.12%. The MIC values of the CGF against S. aureus and S. mutans were 47.9% and 34.17%, respectively, and the MBC values of the CGF against S. aureus and S. mutans were 100%. The viability and the ability in inhibiting the biofilm formation of S. mutans and S. aureus following treatment with CGF showed a reduction in the concentration-dependent manner as compared with the control group. CONCLUSION CGF possesses antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity against S. aureus and S. mutans.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the efficacy, safety and recurrence rate of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) grafts and limbal conjunctival autografts (LCAs) following pterygium excision. METHODS A total of 108 patients (108 eyes) with primary pterygium were included in this study and were divided into group A (56 eyes) and group B (52 eyes). Patients in group A underwent excision of the pterygium followed by LCA while patients in group B underwent PRF grafts following pterygium excision. The PRF was produced using the patient's own whole-blood sample by centrifugation and extrusion. The surgery time, intraoperative complications, postoperative complications, recurrence rate, intraocular pressure (IOP) and follow-up period were recorded and evaluated between the two groups. RESULTS The mean surgery time was significantly shorter in group B (25.0 ± 4.2 min) than in group A (36.5 ± 6.3 min) (P < .001). Recurrence was observed in two cases (3.6%) in group A while no recurrence was observed in group B. No graft loss was observed in either group. No other intra/postoperative complications such as a tear in the graft, injury to the medial rectus muscle, excessive bleeding, scleral necrosis, graft oedema, graft necrosis, pannus formation or symblepharon appeared in either group. CONCLUSIONS This study presented with a promising outcome of PRF graft applications in primary pterygium surgery. The use of PRF following pterygium excision is a simple, easily applicable, and comfortable method for both patients and surgeons, with less time consumption, recurrence rate and complications, which could be widely used in pterygium management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Alveolar osteitis (AO) is the most common painful post-operative complication after tooth extraction. The common modalities used in the management of AO are lavage, placement of medicated dressings, analgesics, and antibiotics. The present study was undertaken to compare platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) for pain relief in AO. METHODS All cases meeting the eligibility criteria received two different treatment modalities over a span of 18 months. At the analysis stage, the final sample size comprised 70 patients, with 35 patients appropriated in each group. Group A patients received ZOE and Group B received PRF. Pain scores were measured on "1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th" days based on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and compared in both groups of patients. The collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test, t test, and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS In patients treated with ZOE dressing, the average VAS scores observed were 7.4 ± 1.5, 5.1 ± 1.1, 3.4 ± 0.9, and 2.1 ± 0.7, respectively, on the "1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th" follow-up days. In patients treated with PRF, the average VAS score observed were 4.1 ± 1.2, 2.6 ± 0.9, 1.7 ± 0.9, and 0.8 ± 0.8 respectively. CONCLUSION Both ZOE and PRF were effective in pain control during the follow-up period. However, the pain intensity measured as a pain score using VAS was, lower in the PRF group than in the ZOE group on all follow-up days.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is hallmarked by a progressive degradation of articular cartilage. One major driver of OA is inflammation, in which cytokines such as IL-6, TNF-α and IL-1β are secreted by activated chondrocytes, as well as synovial cells—including macrophages. Intra-articular injection of blood products—such as citrate-anticoagulated plasma (CPRP), hyperacute serum (hypACT), and extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from blood products—is gaining increasing importance in regenerative medicine for the treatment of OA. A co-culture system of primary OA chondrocytes and activated M1 macrophages was developed to model an OA joint in order to observe the effects of EVs in modulating the inflammatory environment. Primary OA chondrocytes were obtained from patients undergoing total knee replacement. Primary monocytes obtained from voluntary healthy donors and the monocytic cell line THP-1 were differentiated and activated into proinflammatory M1 macrophages. EVs were isolated by ultracentrifugation and characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis and Western blot. Gene expression analysis of chondrocytes by RT-qPCR revealed increased type II collagen expression, while cytokine profiling via ELISA showed lower TNF-α and IL-1β levels associated with EV treatment. In conclusion, the inflammation model provides an accessible tool to investigate the effects of blood products and EVs in the inflammatory context of OA.

Abstract
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) represents second generation of platelet concentrates, which has gained increasing awareness in recent years for regenerative procedures. This biologic additive is completely autologous, easy to prepare, has minimal expense, and possesses prolonged growth factor release, together with several other advantages over traditionally prepared platelet concentrates. Since its introduction, various protocols for PRF preparation have been proposed with different amounts of growth factors and other biomolecules necessary for wound healing. However, reference data about potential effect of some PRF components on hard and soft tissue healing are still conflicting. The current article intends to clarify the relevant advances about physiological role of certain PRF components and to provide insight into the new developmental approach. Also, this review summarizes the evolution of platelet concentrates and biologic properties of different modifications of PRF procedure.

Abstract
The treatment of gingival recession is a frequent demand due to aesthetic concern, root caries, and /or root hypersensitivity. The purpose of this case study was to evaluate the success and predictability of coronally advanced flap (CAF) in combination with peripheral blood mesenchymal stem cells (PBMSCs) and platelet rich fibrin matrix(PRFM) for the management of Miller's Class II gingival recession. CAF followed by placement of PBMSCs and PRFM was performed on a male patient, aged 25 years having Miller’s Class II gingival recession of 5-6 mm on the upper left canine, premolars and molars. The patient was followed up for 3 months. Root coverage of 60.0% and clinical attachment gain of 3 mm were evident following 3 months of follow-up. This novel technique showed an effective way to increase the width of attached gingiva and treat gingival recession.

Abstract
Purpose: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a new platelet concentrate concept consisting of an autologous fibrin gel having accumulation of platelets and the released cytokines in a fibrin clot. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of autologous PRF in accelerating bone regeneration and repair in fresh third molar extraction sockets. The investigators hypothesized the cicatricial properties and accumulation of growth factors in a single clot which will improve bone density and quality. Materials and Methods: PRF results from a natural and progressive polymerization occurring during centrifugation. Two groups were made with bilaterally impacted third molar patients. PRF was obtained and surgical extraction was carried out under aseptic conditions. Quantitative data are presented as mean. Statistical significance was inferred at P < 0.05. Results: Results obtained were evaluated statistically and found a significant difference between the groups in improvement in alveolar bone density of regenerate measured radiographically. The study demonstrates a faster bone formation in the extracted sockets with PRF as compared to control. Conclusion: PRF proved to be an autologous biomaterial with useful features that allowed efficient postextraction bone defect filling and faster bone regeneration.

Abstract
AIM To report a case involving transantral palatal root piezoelectric surgery followed by a sinus floor augmentation procedure with the purpose of minimizing and managing complications associated with sinus lining perforations and optimizing bone regeneration at the site of the surgical defect. SUMMARY An asymptomatic 28-year-old male patient with the diagnosis of chronic apical periodontitis on a previously root filled right maxillary first molar (FDI tooth 16) and second premolar (No. 15) was managed by transantral apical surgery. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) revealed the position of the palatal root of the first molar within the maxillary sinus. The case highlights the management of the palatal root and the handling of a perforation of the Schneiderian membrane through a combination of piezosurgery and a sinus lift grafting procedure involving a second-generation of platelet concentrates. No postoperative complications were observed. Sinus bone augmentation after a 26-month recall period was confirmed by CBCT in the clinically asymptomatic teeth. KEY LEARNING POINTS The selective bone tissue cutting and enhanced visibility obtained by piezoelectric surgery in comparison with current rotary techniques make this technology the preferred tool for apical surgery when the mucosal lining of the maxillary sinus could be compromised. The wound healing and physical properties of the platelet-rich fibrin membranes in combination with an allograft material can be considered as sinus bone graft options when a transantral approach is performed on a palatal root of a maxillary molar. A preoperative tomographic examination is essential for apical surgery using a transantral approach with sinus bone augmentation, because of the information obtained from the axial and coronal views on the CBCT scan.

Abstract
Severe hemorrhage causes significant metabolic and cellular dysfunction secondary to deficient tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery. If bleeding continues, hemodynamic destabilization, hypoxemia, multiple organ failure, and death will occur. Techniques employed to promote hemostasis include surgical suture ligatures, cautery, chemical agents, self-assembling nanoparticles, and physical methods, like mechanical pressure. Improved understanding of the natural clotting cascade has allowed newly designed agents to become more targeted for clinical and military use. Topically-applied hemostatic agents have enormous clinical applications in achieving hemostasis. This manuscript describes currently available and developing topical hemostatic materials, including topical active agents, mechanical agents, synthetic/hemisynthetic hemostatic agents, and external hemostatic dressings for clinical practice.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) concentrate on the bile duct anastomosis healing process in rats. Material and Methods Thirty male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were used for the study. The animals were allocated into three groups: Group I Control Group (n=10): Anastomosis to the common bile duct (CBD) with a stent. Group II PRF Group (n=10): Anastomosis to the CBD with a stent and covered with PRF. Group III Sham Group (n=10): Preparation of the common bile duct, no anastomosis. The animals were followed up for 1 month, then sacrificed. Study parameters were adhesions around the anastomosis, thickness of the bridging bile duct tissue over the stent, and histopathologic examination of the bridging bile duct tissue. Results CBD anastomosis using a stent caused severe adhesion around the anastomosis, bridging bile duct tissues were weak and histopathologically, healing was incomplete in most of the control animals. However, PRF application significantly reduced the adhesions, increased the quality of the bridging bile duct tissues, and caused complete healing histologically. Conclusion PRF is an autologous, easily prepared membrane. The present study findings show that PRF prevents local complications and increases the healing capacity of the bile duct after CBD anastomosis. Therefore, it might be a new treatment option for preventing complications following common bile duct anastomosis in liver transplantation patients.

Abstract
Hemostats, sealants, and adhesives are useful adjuncts to modern surgical procedures. To maximize their benefit, a surgeon needs to understand the safety, efficacy, usability, and cost of these agents. To be truly added to a surgeon's own toolbox, the operator must also have knowledge of when and how to best use these materials. This commentary is designed to succinctly facilitate this understanding and knowledge. A nomenclature and classification system based on group, category, and class has been created to help with this process and is provided here. By using this system, materials consisting of similar design and for common indications can be compared. For example, in this system, the three functional groups are hemostats, sealants, and adhesives. The hemostats may be divided into four categories: mechanical, active, flowable, and fibrin sealant. These hemostat categories are further subdivided into generic classes based on the composition of the approved materials. Similarly, categories and classes are provided for sealants and adhesives. In this commentary, the salient points with respect to the characteristics of these agents are presented. A discussion of when these agents can be used in specific indications and how they may be applied to achieve the best results is also provided.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative and inflammatory joint disorder with cartilage loss. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) can undergo chondrogenic differentiation and secrete growth factors associated with tissue repair and immunomodulation. Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) emerges in regenerative medicine because of its growth factor content and fibrin matrix. This study evaluates the therapeutic application of DPSCs and L-PRF in OA via immunomodulation and cartilage regeneration. Chondrogenic differentiation of DPSCs, with or without L-PRF exudate (ex) and conditioned medium (CM), and of bone marrow-mesenchymal stem cells was compared. These cells showed differential chondrogenesis. L-PRF was unable to increase cartilage-associated components. Immature murine articular chondrocytes (iMACs) were cultured with L-PRF ex, L-PRF CM, or DPSC CM. L-PRF CM had pro-survival and proliferative effects on unstimulated and cytokine-stimulated iMACs. L-PRF CM stimulated the release of IL-6 and PGE2, and increased MMP-13, TIMP-1 and IL-6 mRNA levels in cytokine-stimulated iMACs. DPSC CM increased the survival and proliferation of unstimulated iMACs. In cytokine-stimulated iMACs, DPSC CM increased TIMP-1 gene expression, whereas it inhibited nitrite release in 3D culture. We showed promising effects of DPSCs in an in vitro OA model, as they undergo chondrogenesis in vitro, stimulate the survival of chondrocytes and have immunomodulatory effects.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are undifferentiated cells that have the ability of self-renewal and trans-differentiation into other cell types. They hold out hope for finding a cure for many diseases. Nevertheless, there are still some obstacles that limit their clinical transplantation. One of these obstacles are the xenogeneic substances added in either proliferation or differentiation media with subsequent immunogenic and infectious transmission problems. In this study, we aimed to replace fetal bovine serum (FBS), the main nutrient source for MSC proliferation with xeno-free blood derivatives. We tested the effect of human activated pure platelet-rich plasma (P-PRP) and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) on the proliferation of human adipose derived-MSCs (AD-MSCs) at different concentrations. For the induction of MSC neural differentiation, we used human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) at different concentrations in combination with P-PRP to effect xeno-free/species-specific neuronal/glial differentiation and we found that media with 10% CSF and 10% PRP promoted glial differentiation, while media with only 10% PRP induced a neuron-like phenotype.

Abstract
New therapies that accelerate musculoskeletal tissue recovery are highly desirable. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin biomaterial that acts as a binding site for both platelets and growth factors. Through increasing the local concentration of growth factors at specific tissues, PRF promotes tissue regeneration. PRF has been frequently used in combination with bone graft materials to reduce healing times and promote bone regeneration during maxillofacial surgery. However, its benefits during muscle repair and recovery are less well-documented. Here, we perform a narrative review on PRF therapies and muscle injuries to ascertain its beneficial effects. We reviewed the factors that contribute to the biological activity of PRF and the published pre-clinical and clinical evidence to support its emerging use in musculoskeletal therapy. We include in vitro studies, in vivo animal studies and clinical articles highlighting both the success and failures of PRF treatment. PRF can promote the healing process when used in a range of orthopaedic and sports-related injuries. These include cartilage repair, rotator cuff surgery and anterior cruciate ligament surgery. However, conflicting data for these benefits have been reported, most likely due to inconsistencies in both PRF preparation protocols and dosing regimens. Despite this, the literature generally supports the use of PRF as a beneficial adjuvant for a range of chronic muscle, tendon, bone or other soft tissue injuries. Further clinical trials to confirm these benefits require consistency in PRF preparation and the classification of a successful clinical outcome to fully harness its potential.

Abstract
In recent years, autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derivatives have been used widely in the regeneration and repair of tissue, but a standard definition and preparation method for PRP are lacking. We developed a standardized method using platelet indices as quality-control indicators for PRP preparation. Twenty-one elderly patients (9 males, 12 females) with complex wounds were treated with standardized platelet-rich plasma (S-PRP). The platelet count in PRP after the second centrifugation was 1,069-1,436 × 109 /L. We adjusted the platelet concentration in PRP after a second centrifugation to 1,000 × 109 /L according to a formula using platelet-poor plasma (PPP). The standardized preparation method that we developed gave S-PRP with a relatively uniform platelet concentration. The wounds of 21 patients showed accelerated healing after S-PRP treatment, and there were no obvious side effects during treatment. These data suggest that our preparation method of S-PRP, using platelet indices as quality-control indicators with platelet count of 1,000 × 109 /L could be used for the treatment of complex wounds in the elderly. The preparation method of S-PRP proposed in the present study may be a simple and effective method of PRP quality control.

Abstract
Autologous blood derived products, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are widely applied in regenerative therapies, in contrast to the drawbacks in their application, mainly deriving from the preparation methods used. Eliminating the disadvantages of both PRP and PRF, hyperacute serum (HAS) opens a new path in autologous serum therapy showing similar or even improved regenerative potential at the same time. Despite the frequent experimental and clinical use of PRP and HAS, their protein composition has not been examined thoroughly yet. Thus, we investigated and compared the composition of HAS, serum, PRP and plasma products using citrate and EDTA by simple laboratory tests, and we compared the composition of HAS, serum, EDTA PRP and plasma by Proteome Profiler and ELISA assays. According to our results the natural ionic balance was upset in both EDTA and citrate PRP as well as in plasma. EDTA PRP contained significantly higher level of growth factors and cytokines, especially platelet derived angiogenic and inflammatory proteins, that can be explained by the significantly higher number of platelets in EDTA PRP. The composition analysis of blood derivatives revealed that although the preparation method of PRP and HAS were similar, the ionic and protein composition of HAS could be advantageous for cell function.

MATERIALS AND METHODS PRFM was prepared, with minor modification in Choukron's protocol, over a collagen sheet without using compression device. To study its efficacy and reproducibility, total 15 patients over 18 years of age with chronic, nonhealing ulcers of more than 3 months of various causes were included and patients with active wound infection were excluded. RESULTS We were able to prepare and reproduce PRFM by our technique. It overcomes the limitations of compression method with comparable efficacy to compression method. Results obtained on comparison at week 0, 3, and 6, by paired t-test, were found to be statistically significant (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Preparation of PRFM with the method described is easy and reproducible. Use of collagen sheet synergistically improved wound healing.

Abstract
Platelet concentrates (PCs; platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin) are autologous bioactive substances that have found varied application in medical and dental fields, particularly in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and sports medicine. The rationale of these technologies is to extract all the elements from patient’s own blood sample, which could be used to improve healing by promoting tissue regeneration. PCs have evolved a long way since its introduction in 1954. PCs have been used successfully in periodontics and implant dentistry. However, the preparation protocol, processing time, transfer of concentrates, centrifugation temperature, vibration, etc., being not standardized are various factors for the mixed results reported in the literature. This review intends to discuss evolution of PCs, their preparation techniques, and their clinical and technical aspects and applications.

Abstract
Statins like simvastatin (SIM) have demonstrated to have pleiotropic actions other than their conventional use as antilipidemic drugs. Also, nowadays natural scaffolds like platelets rich fibrin (PRF) showed promising results on bone regeneration. Aim This study compare the regenerative power of SIM and PRF added locally each as a sole filling material on induced bone defect and evaluate the combined effect using PRF loaded with SIM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A critical size bone defect was induced in 48 male albino rats of average weight 150-200 g and were divided into 4 groups according to the filling material. Control, PRF, SIM, and SIM/PRF group. Each group was subdivided according to the sacrificing period into two subgroups (one and two-months postoperatively). Tibial specimens were evaluated histologically using masson trichrome (MT) special stain to detect areas of new bone formation, immunohistochemically using anti- BMP2 and anti-VEGF, serum levels of Osteoprotegerin (OPG), RANKL, osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase enzyme (ALP) were measured one and two months postoperatively using ELISA, Finally bone mineral density (BMD) at the bone defect area was analyzed using digital X-ray one and two-months postoperatively. RESULTS: The percentage of newly formed bone increased significantly in the three groups vs the control group with the highest significant increase (p < 0.001) in the SIM/PRF group one month postoperatively. Also, SIM/PRF group was the only group which showed significant bone maturation two-months postoperatively compared to the other groups. Immunohistochemical analysis showed significant increase in positively stained BMP-2 and VEGF expression (p < 0.001) in the three groups vs the control group with the highest significant increase (p < 0.001) in the SIM/PRF group. Serum bone anabolic markers increased significantly in the SIM and SIM/PRF groups. In contrast, RANKL serum level decreased significantly in the SIM and SIM/PRF group one month postoperatively with no significant decrease in the PRF group vs the control group. Digital X-ray results revealed the highest BMD percent change was found in the SIM/PRF group and showed complete bone healing two-months postoperatively.

Abstract
Leukocyte- and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) is an autologous platelet concentrate, consisting of a fibrin matrix enriched with platelets, leukocytes and a plethora of cytokines and growth factors. Since L-PRF is produced bedside from whole blood without the use of an anti-coagulant, it is becoming a popular adjuvant in regenerative medicine. While other types of platelet concentrates have been described to stimulate blood vessel formation, little is known about the angiogenic capacities of L-PRF. Therefore, this study aimed to fully characterize the angiogenic potential of L-PRF. With an antibody array, the growth factors released by L-PRF were determined and high levels of CXC chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR-2) ligands and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were found. L-PRF induced in vitro key steps of the angiogenic process: endothelial proliferation, migration and tube formation. In addition, we could clearly demonstrate that L-PRF is able to induce blood vessel formation in vivo, the chorioallantoic membrane assay. In conclusion, we could demonstrate the angiogenic capacity of L-PRF both in vitro and in vivo, underlying the clinical potential of this easy-to-use platelet concentrate.

Abstract
Background/purpose It is well-known that diverse types of blood proteins contribute to healing process via different mechanisms. Presence and potential involvements of blood-derived abundant proteins in the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) to its regenerative capacity have not been sufficiently emphasized in the literature. The aim of this paper was to analyze the abundant proteome content of PRF and summarize previously reported effects of identified proteins on wound healing via a literature review. Materials and methods The PRF samples obtained from non-smoking, systemically healthy volunteers were subjected to 2D gel electrophoresis after extracting the proteins from fibrin matrices. All matching spots were excised from the gels and identified by MALDI TOF/TOF MS/MS analysis. A literature review was conducted to reveal possible contributions of identified proteins to wound healing. Results Totally, thirty-five blood proteins were commonly identified among all studied samples. These proteins included serine protease inhibitors, such as alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, inter-alpha-trypsin-inhibitor, protease C1 inhibitor, and complement proteins. In addition, abundant presence of immunoglobulin G was observed. The abundance of albumin, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin vitronectin, fetuin-A, ficolin-3 and transthyretin was also detected. Conclusion The results of this study indicated that PRF abundantly contains blood-origin actors which were previously reported for their direct contribution to wound healing. Further studies exploring the protein content of PRF are needed to reveal its undisclosed potential roles in the healing process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) on the intestinal anastomotic wound healing in a mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) rat model. METHODS Forty male Sprague Dawley rats were allocated into four groups: Group I (n = 10): anastomosis to normal bowel; Group II (n = 10): anastomosis after I/R injury; Group III (n = 10): anastomosis and PRF; Group IV: anastomosis after I/R and PRF. Animals were followed up for 7 days, then sacrificed. Anastomotic complications, anastomosis bursting pressures and histopathologic evaluations of the anastomoses were the study parameters. RESULTS The I/R injury caused more anastomotic adhesion and very low anastomotic bursting pressure when compared with the other groups (p < 0.01). Application of PRF onto the bowel, however, dramatically decreased the local complications and significantly increased the anastomosis bursting pressures (p < 0.01). Histologic evaluation of the anastomoses showed almost complete healing in all animals. The mean histologic scores of the animals were not different between the groups. CONCLUSION PRF has a beneficial effect on the intestinal healing process by prevention of local complications and increases the tensile strain of the anastomosis. This effect was more prominent, particularly when healing is disrupted. Therefore, we conclude that PRF could be an alternative treatment option to prevent anastomotic complications for elderly, co-morbid and emergency patients.

Abstract
CONTEXT Comprehensive reviews on clinical applications of Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) in surgery are limited despite its extensive utilization resulting in a dearth of knowledge on its effectiveness. Hence this article focuses on shedding light to the various applications of PRF pertaining to surgery through a systematic review. OBJECTIVE The systematic review is aimed at evaluating the value of PRF in different areas of surgery. DATA SOURCES A systematic review of articles sourced from MEDLINE-pubmed (2008-2017(July)) was done. Additional articles were searched through GOOGLE SCHOLAR and SCIENCE DIRECT. Search terms such as Platelet rich fibrin; Platelet rich fibrin, surgery; Platelet concentrate; second generation concentrate; Applications of PRF in surgery were used. STUDY SELECTION Systematic reviews, Randomized control trials, Pilot studies and Case reports were included. Non English articles, in-vitro and animal studies were excluded. DATA EXTRACTION Independent sourcing of articles by 3 authors using a set of predefined criteria. DATA SYNTHESIS Out of the 25 articles covering various surgical procedures that met the inclusion criteria, positive outcomes were noted in most. Although categorization into one specific type of study was not done, the overall success rate with PRF usage was 78%.No differences between test and control groups were observed in 2 studies and 3 studies showed no significant improvements with the usage of PRF. LIMITATIONS The systematic review did not categorize the study designs while evaluating success rates which might be considered as a shortcoming as case reports were also included. CONCLUSIONS The future propositions are vast and point towards innovative applications of this bio-material possibly in transplant and burn cases if a method of obtaining large amounts can be devised. However since we rely on evidence-based results, further long term studies are needed in distinct areas of applications to decisively prove its effectiveness.

Abstract
Platelet-derived factors are biomaterials that might accelerate healing process in oral, maxillofacial, and several other applications. Release of specific factors by platelet concentrates is critical to achieving a successful outcome. Here, we have shown that platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) clots were beneficial sources of leukocytes, which may directly affect the release of chemokines and growth factors. When compared with the standard leukocyte-PRF (L-PRF), the experimental low-force modified procedure [defined as advanced-PRF (A-PRF)] entrapped the same content of viable leukocytes, released a similar amount of inflammatory cytokines, but secreted 3-, 1.6-, 3-, and 1.2-fold higher levels of Eotaxin, CCL5, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), respectively. A leukocyte-free scaffold, such as plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF), released only platelet-specific factors and, in particular, the F3 fraction, the richest in growth factors, secreted higher amount of CCL5 and PDGF compared to F1 and F2 fractions. In conclusion, different procedures and leukocyte content affect cytokine, chemokines, and growth factor release from platelet derivatives, which may be helpful in different clinical settings.

Abstract
PurposeTo compare the surgical results, complications, and recurrence rates of primary pterygium excision with conjunctival autografts (CA) vs platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) grafts.Patients and methodsA total of 35 eyes of 35 patients with primary pterygium were included in the study. The patients underwent excision of pterygium followed by closure of the bare sclera by CA (group 1, n=20) vs PRF grafts (group 2, n=15). The PRF was generated from the patients' own whole-blood sample by centrifugation and pressing. The surgery times, intra/postoperative complications, recurrence rates of pterygium, and changes in visual acuity (VA) were evaluated and compared within groups.ResultsThe mean follow-up period was 14.3±6.5 months (6-24 months). The mean preoperative and postoperative VAs were same (20/25) (P=0.204). The mean surgery time was shorter in group 2 (22.1±1.9 min) compared to group 1 (33.8±7.8 min) (P=0.001). The recurrence was observed only in one (6.6%) case of group 2, while none of the cases showed recurrence in group 1. Graft loss was observed in 2 (10%) cases in group 1, and 1 (6.6%) case in group 2. No other intra/postoperative complications such as tear in the graft, excessive bleeding, scleral necrosis, graft necrosis, pannus formation, or symblepharon occurred in both groups.ConclusionsThis preliminary study showed encouraging results of the application of PRF for conjuntivoplasty after pterygium excision. The use of PRF in pterygium surgery is a simple, easily applicable, and a promising method with low rates of recurrence and complications.

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate vertical alveolar bone loss 3 months after tooth extraction when a technique of ridge preservation was applied using a particulate demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft 300 - 500 µm associated with platelet concentrates (platelet-rich-fibrin) in the form of gel and membranes. Material and Methods: A retrospective radiological clinical study was conducted on 56 patients for whom 95 extractions had been performed immediately followed by alveolar filling. Among the patients, 17 were smokers and 16 were provided with an immediate removable temporary prosthesis after extractions. Vertical bone loss was measured radiologically by panoramic X-ray before extractions and by a computed tomography scan 3 months after, at the level of mid-buccal bone wall, by two independent observers. For statistical analysis, Student’s t-test was performed to compare the mean bone loss between mono- and pluri-radicular teeth and to compare the mean bone loss between tobacco users versus non users and finally to compare the mean bone loss between individuals that had provisional removable prosthesis and those that had not. Results: Three months after tooth extraction, the mean of vertical loss of the mid-buccal bone wall was 0.72 (SD 0.71) mm (5.53% SD 5.19). No significant difference between bone loss at mono-radicular and pluri-radicular teeth (P = 0.982) was observed. There was no significant correlation between tobacco habits and bone loss (P = 0.2), nor between provisional removable prosthesis and bone loss (P = 0.786). Conclusion: These results indicate a good potential for the technique using Demineralized Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft 300 - 500 µm and platelet concentrates in alveolar bone preservation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growth factor-containing products have been reported to increase implant stability and accelerate osseointegration. Concentrated growth factor (CGF) can be used for this purpose with the growth factors it contains. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of CGF on implant stability and osseointegration. METHODS Twelve patients with maxillary anterior toothless were included in the study. Implant cavities prepared in the study group were covered with CGF membrane before implant placement, but conventional implant placement was performed in the control group. Resonance frequency measurements were performed with the Osstell device intra-operatively, post-operatively, at the 1st week, and at the 4th week. RESULTS The mean ISQ values were found to be 79.40 ± 2.604 for the study group and 73.50 ± 5.226 for the control group at 1st week, 78.60 ± 3.136 for the study group and 73.45 ± 5.680 for the control group at 4th week. The differences between the groups were statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS It was observed that the concentrated growth factor had positive effects on implant stabilization. The ISQ measurements at week 1 and week 4 were notably higher in the study group. Application of this material seems to accelerate osseointegration.

Abstract
Adipose tissue‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (Ad‐MSC) and platelet derivatives have been used alone or in combination to achieve regeneration of injured tissues. We have tested the effect of platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) on Ad‐MSC and adipocyte function. PRP increased Ad‐MSC viability, proliferation rate and G1‐S cell cycle progression, by at least 7‐, 2‐, and 2.2‐fold, respectively, and reduced caspase 3 cleavage. Higher PRP concentrations or PRPs derived from individuals with higher platelet counts were more effective in increasing Ad‐MSC growth. PRP also accelerated cell migration by at least 1.5‐fold. However, PRP did not significantly affect mature adipocyte viability, differentiation and expression levels of PPAR‐γ and AP‐2 mRNAs, while it increased leptin production by 3.5‐fold. Interestingly, PRP treatment of mature adipocytes also enhanced the release of Interleukin (IL)‐6, IL‐8, IL‐10, Interferon‐γ, and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor. Thus, data are consistent with a stimulatory effect of platelet derivatives on Ad‐MSC growth and motility. Moreover, PRP did not reduce mature adipocyte survival and increased the release of pro‐angiogenic factors, which may facilitate tissue regeneration processes. © 2015 The Authors. Abstract
Background: To evaluate variations in fibrin network patterns of the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in different age groups. Materials and Methods: Ninety-five patients were divided into three age groups: Group 1: (20–39 years); Group 2: (40–59 years); and Group 3: (60 years and above). PRF was prepared from blood samples of all patients and were subjected to cell block cytology method of histological analysis and slides were prepared to histologically assess the age-related changes in (i) fibrin network patterns in terms of density and (ii) entrapment of platelets and white blood cells (WBCs) within fibrin meshwork. Results: Two types of fibrin network pattern arrangements noticed: Dense and loose types in three age groups. However, there was a noticeable decrease in the dense type of fibrin network with progressing age and increase in the loose type of fibrin arrangement. Furthermore, variation in a number of platelets and WBCs entrapped within fibrin network in relation to age was noticed. Conclusion: From the current study it can be concluded that age can be considered as one of the influencing factors on quality of PRF in terms of fibrin network patterns and hence, platelet and WBCs entrapment within these fibrin networks.

Abstract
The aim of this article is to review the outcomes of platelet preparations in dentistry. A structured electronic search discovered 348 articles, which described the use of autologous platelet concentrates with a relevance to clinical dentistry. Among these articles, 220 articles investigated platelet rich plasma, 99 investigated platelet rich fibrin, 22 investigated plasma rich in growth factors and 7 investigated the use of concentrated growth factors. Several studies reported beneficial treament outcomes in terms of enhanced bone and soft tissue regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In addition to releasing a pool of growth factors during activation, platelets have many features that indicate their role in the anti-infective host defense. The antimicrobial activities of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and related plasma preparations against periodontal disease-associated bacteria were evaluated. METHODS Four distinct plasma fractions were extracted in the formulation used commonly in dentistry and were tested for their antibacterial properties against three periodontal bacteria: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The minimum inhibitory concentration of each plasma preparation was determined, and in vitro time-kill assays were used to detect their abilities to inhibit bacterial growth. Bacterial adhesion interference and the susceptibility of bacterial adherence by these plasma preparations were also conducted. RESULTS All plasma preparations can inhibit bacterial growth, with PRP showing the superior activity. Bacterial growth inhibition by PRP occurred in the first 24 hours after application in the time-kill assay. PRP interfered with P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans attachment and enhanced exfoliation of attached P. gingivalis but had no influences on F. nucleatum bacterial adherence. CONCLUSIONS PRP expressed antibacterial properties, which may be attributed to platelets possessing additional antimicrobial molecules. The application of PRP on periodontal surgical sites is advisable because of its regenerative potential and its antibacterial effects.
