Abstract
Purpose The aim of this article was to systematically review the available literature on patient specific total temporomandibular joint total joint replacement (PS-TMJR) implants for their biomaterial, designs, fabrication techniques and their outcomes. Methods A literature review was conducted using PubMed, and science direct databases using the key words three-dimensional printing, 3D printing, CAD CAM, computer aided designing, computer aided manufacturing, additive technology, custom made implants, patient specific implants in combination with Temporomandibular joint, TMJ surgery. Results The search revealed 2760 articles, of which 374 were in English and discussed TMJ reconstruction. Further filtering shortlisted 74 articles that discussed PS-TMJR. Duplicates were removed and additional added from article references. 39 articles describing biomaterial, designing and fabrication of PS-TMJR implants and their outcomes were selected for analysis. Conclusions Although PS-TMJR implants allow a better anatomical fit, improved fixation, and safeguard various structures such as the inferior alveolar nerve, they vary in designs, material and fabrication techniques. However, PS-TMJR printed with SLM and EBM technologies have yet to be compared with the conventional ones in terms of mechanical strength, and clinical outcome. With emerging bioprinting technologies, even newer biomaterials should be considered for 3D printing of PS-TMJR devices designed to achieve harmony in function between the joint device, bone and masticatory muscles.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of orofacial pain conditions which are the most common non-dental pain complaint in the maxillofacial region. Due to the complexity of the etiology, the diagnosis and management of TMD remain a challenge where consensus is still lacking in many aspects. While clinical examination is considered the most important process in the diagnosis of TMD, imaging may serve as a valuable adjunct in selected cases. Depending on the type of TMD, many treatment modalities have been proposed, ranging from conservative options to open surgical procedures. In this review, the authors discuss the present thinking in the etiology and classification of TMD, followed by the diagnostic approach and the current trend and controversies in management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mandibular condyle injury usually results in malocclusion and disharmony of facial growth in growing children. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of autogenous coronoid grafts on the facial growth of children with unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis who underwent mandibular condyle reconstruction. METHODS Ten growing patients with unilateral bony TMJ ankylosis admitted in West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University between January 1st, 2008 and December 31st, 2016 were followed up and evaluated. These patients include three males and seven females with ages ranging from 5 years to 12 years at the time of surgery. Each patient underwent gap arthroplasty, condyle reconstruction with ipsilateral coronoid, and interposition of the pedicled temporalis fascial flap in a single operation. The postoperative follow-up ranged from 3 years to 8 years with an average of 4.9 years. Postoperative panoramic radiographs determined the growth of the mandibular height and length on the affected side and compared it with those of the healthy side. RESULTS All patients recovered uneventfully after surgery. At the end of follow-up period, the maximal mouth opening ranged from 32 mm to 41 mm with an average of 35.6 mm. Mandibular height and length continued to grow after the successful treatment of ankylosis using autogenous coronoid grafts for condyle reconstruction. However, growth deficit still existed. The final ramus height and mandibular length of the affected side at the end of follow-up increased by 25.3% (P<0.05) and 26.1% (P<0.05), respectively, compared with the initial values measured immediately after surgery. Growth rates of ramus height and mandibular length of the affected side were 47.1% and 27.2% lower (P<0.05) than those of the healthy side, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Mandibular height and length continued to grow after the successful treatment of ankylosis by using autogenous coronoid grafts for condyle reconstruction. However, growth deficit still existed. The growth rate of the affected mandible was reduced compared with that of the undisturbed side even after treatment of ankylosis.

Abstract
The goal of this paper is to review the advantages and disadvantages of the various treatment options of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) total joint replacement (TJR). TMJ articles published within the last 20 years were reviewed to collect the information on non-invasive and invasive TMD treatment methods. Recent technological advancements helped the evolution of treatment methods and offered significant value to TMD patients and surgeons. Considering the TMD levels, the therapeutic procedures can involve general health examiniations, physical therapy, medication, oral rehabilation or as an end stage clinical invention, temporomandibular joint replacement. In fact when intra-articular TMD is present, the effective treatment method appears to be TJR. However, concern for infection, material hypersensitivity, device longevity and screws loosening issues still exists. Further combined research utilizing the knowledge and expertise of, surgeons, material scientists, and bioengineers is needed for the development of improved TMD therapeutic treatment.

Abstract
Indications and considerations for reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) differ between growing and skeletally mature patients. Osteoarthritis, which is the most common cause of TMJ destruction in adults, is comparatively rare in children. The most common indications in young patients are congenital deformities, pathology, ankylosis and progressive resorptive processes. Options for reconstruction include distraction osteogenesis, autologous reconstruction (ie, costochondral graft, free fibula flap), and total alloplastic joint replacement. The choice of the ideal reconstruction is based on multiple factors, which include extent and laterality of the deformity, patient age, jaw growth pattern, and potential for progressive destruction.

Abstract
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are a common reason for consultation. Failure of medical treatments sometimes leads to the need for one of many surgical alternatives. Our purpose was to evaluate the results of anterior pedicle temporalis muscle flap interposition in the treatment of TMJ disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS For this prospective study, we selected 18 patients who underwent TMJ surgery involving the interposition of a temporalis muscle flap according to a standardized technique, between January 1, 2009 and August 31, 2014. CT imaging was performed on all patients prior to surgery. We documented the etiology of TMJ dysfunction, pre and postoperative pain using a visual analogue scale (VAS), pre and postoperative (last consultation) mouth opening, and complications. We used the Wilcoxon test for our statistical analysis. RESULTS We observed a significant variation in preoperative and postoperative pain and mouth opening, with an average decrease in VAS values of 4.9/10 and an average increase of mouth opening of 11.1mm. No major complications were observed. DISCUSSION The interposition of an anterior pedicle temporalis muscle flap in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder is a simple and effective technique.

Abstract
Introduction
Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign but aggressive lesion arising from sinovia. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is hardly ever involved.
Methods
We describe a case of PVNS arising in the left TMJ involving infratemporal fossa soft tissue and the skull base; we also present the reconstruction.
Results
A 37-year-old woman had progressive mandibular swelling for 6 months. Computed tomography of the skull revealed an osteolytic lesion in the left TMJ, involving the upper mandible, condyle, and glenoid fossa and extending to the infratemporal fossa and fossa media through a defect in temporal bone. Surgical management included a left pterional craniotomy to reach the temporal skull base and resect the intracranial tumor and a facial approach with partial left mandibulectomy and resection of left condyle, glenoid fossa, and tumor removal in infratemporal fossa. Mandible function was restored with prosthetic reconstruction of the condyle. She progressively started to eat solid foods after 3 months, becoming increasingly functional and asymptomatic. At 30 months' follow-up, she had no sign of tumoral recurrence and showed asymptomatic and normal TMJ function.
Conclusion
PVNS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bone neoplasms affecting young patients. In such cases, radical excision is mandatory and TMJ prosthesis for local reconstruction may be used to preserve functionality.
