Abstract
Oral carcinoma is one of the most vicious forms of cancer with a very low survival rate, as its patients often respond poorly to conventional chemotherapy. Presently several researchers are attempting to pursue an alternative to this therapy using natural products. Considering the promising strategy and induction of apoptosis to target the cancer cells, we evaluated the influence of a seaweed Padina gymnospora (15 µg/ml and 20 µg/ml) in enhancing apoptosis of oral cancer cells (KB-CHR-8-5) after 24-h incubation. The morphological changes indicating apoptosis were primarily assessed using a light microscope after which the apoptosis was confirmed by performing AO/EB staining method. Subsequently, MMP and ROS levels in the cells were assessed using Rh 123 and DCFH-DA staining procedures, respectively. All the above tests confirmed the ability of P. gymnospora to accelerate apoptosis in the oral cancer cells. As a next step, wide proteome analysis was performed where the proteins from P. gymnospora-treated cells were separated using the 2D electrophoresis technique and compared with that of control cells to isolate the differentially expressed proteins. This procedure resulted in the isolation of 10 proteins which were identified using MALDI-TOF/TOF MS, which established that most of the isolated proteins were part of the apoptotic process of the cell. The proteins identified are part of huge and complex pathways where it gets linked with many more genes which are also associated with apoptosis. Bioinformatics of these identified proteins was analyzed using STRING and PANTHER databases. These proteins contribute to cell apoptosis by affecting various functions, biological processes, and the synthesis of cellular components. PANTHER also demonstrated that these proteins belong to the classes of proteins that take part in several vital pathways of the cell among which the apoptotic pathway is the predominant one.

Abstract
Tongue cancer is one of the most common carcinomas of the head and neck region. The antitumor activities of statins, including lovastatin (LV), and the essential oil of eucalyptus (Eu oil), have been adequately reported. The aim of this study was to develop a nanoemulgel containing LV combined with Eu oil that could then be made into a nanoemulsion and assessed to determine its cytotoxicity against the cell line human chondrosarcoma-3 (HSC3) of carcinoma of the tongue. An I-optimal coordinate-exchange quadratic mixture design was adopted to optimize the investigated nanoemulsions. The droplet size and stability index of the developed formulations were measured to show characteristics of the nanoemulsions. The optimized LV loaded self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (LV-Eu-SNEDDS) was loaded into the gelling agent Carbopol 934 to develop the nanoemulgel and evaluated for its rheological properties. The cytotoxic efficiency of the optimized LV-Eu-SNEDDS loaded nanoemulgel was tested for cell viability, and the caspase-3 enzyme test was used against the HSC3 cell line of squamous carcinoma of the tongue. The optimized nanoemulsion had a droplet size of 85 nm and a stability index of 93%. The manufactured nanoemulgel loaded with the optimum LV-Eu-SNEDDS exhibited pseudoplastic flow with thixotropic behavior. The developed optimum LV-Eu-SNEDDS-loaded nanoemulgel had the best half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) and caspase-3 enzyme values of the formulations developed for this study, and these features improved the ability of the nanoemulsion-loaded gel to deliver the drug to the investigated target cells. In addition, the in vitro cell viability studies revealed the synergistic effect between LV and Eu oil in the treatment of tongue cancer. These findings illustrated that the LV-Eu-SNEDDS-loaded gel formulation could be beneficial in the local treatment of tongue cancer.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma patients are exhausted against the powerful chemotherapies, radiotherapies after the surgery, and their immune system is devastated during the process and antibiotic usage become inescapable. Although prescribing an antibiotic might be fraught for such as drug interaction and undesirable proliferation danger, studies still look for the new ideas such as antibiotic combinations that might be safe to use. The antiproliferative and apoptotic outcomes of levofloxacin with cisplatin combination as well as their single usage were examined with WST-1, Caspase-3/BCA and Annexin V methods on SCC-15 cells and a healthy cell line (MRC-5). 24 h treatment of 50 mM single levofloxacin, 50 mM single cisplatin and 50 mM levofloxacin-cisplatin combination resulted in viability rates of SCC-15 cells as 90%, 67% and 80.8%, respectively. Caspase-3 enzyme activity was enhanced 0.92-fold for single levofloxacin, 13.05-fold for single cisplatin and 9.73-fold for the combination of levofloxacin-cisplatin, the total apoptotic activity of single levofloxacin, single cisplatin and levofloxacin-cisplatin combination were observed as 4.88%, 21.14%, 16.21%, respectively on SCC-15. The apoptotic effect of cisplatin on MRC-5 has been shown to be suppressed when combined with levofloxacin. Considering the cell viability, caspase-3, and apoptotic activity results, it's conclude that the levofloxacin-cisplatin combination was also effective compared to the only cisplatin treatment on OSCC cells. The combination has shown less toxicity for healthy cells than single cisplatin treatment. Therefore, our apoptotic findings suggest that the different dosage combinations are necessary to understand the interaction for the treatment of tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Not so many reports about the association between head and neck cancer (HNC) and oral health status related to periodontitis (OHS-P) has been published in different countries with different methods. So, there is a need for an extensive meta-analysis with the total articles published until 2020. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the association between HNC and OHS-P through a meta-analysis. METHODS Based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses guidelines, 22 studies were selected through PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. Meta-analysis using them was performed to evaluate the association. The risk of bias assessment using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to evaluate the quality of non-randomized studies. Publication bias was evaluated by funnel plot and Egger's regression test. RESULTS Since heterogeneity was significant (I² = 88%, P < 0.001), we adopted the random effect model for 22 studies. Those with bad OHS-P, compared to those with good OHS-P, were more likely to have the risk of HNC by 2.4 times (odds ratio [OR], 2.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.88-3.13) for random effect model. The association included publication bias (Egger's regression, P value < 0.001). The association among five studies (I² = 39%, P = 0.16) using alveolar bone loss (ABL) or clinical attachment level (CAL) for assessing periodontitis increased to OR of 3.85 (CI, 3.04-4.88) in the fixed effect model without publication bias (Egger's regression, P = 0.66). Moreover, the association was higher in 10 fair or good NOS studies (OR, 3.08) and in 7 Asian studies (OR, 2.68), which were from the fixed model without publication bias. CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis showed that bad OHS-P was associated with the risk of HNC. The association was stronger in studies using ABL or CAL for assessing periodontitis.

Abstract
Since the introduction of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Southeast Asia, the field has expanded considerably in the region, with existing oral and maxillofacial surgeons performing a multitude of complex surgical procedures, ranging from orthognathic surgical procedures to oncological resection and reconstruction cases. Oral and maxillofacial surgery continues, however, to have considerable potential for growth in Southeast Asia. To accomplish this growth, assistance from the global oral surgery community has proved and continues to prove invaluable and essential.

Abstract
The goal of this study is to develop optimized chitosan-coated Simvastatin (SIM) nanoparticles (NPs) loaded in an in situ gel (ISG) formulation via a face-centered central composite design (FCCCD). Coated SIM-NPs were doped with Quercetin (QRC) using a modified nanoprecipitation method. The concentrations of poloxamer 188 (A) and chitosan (B) at five different levels, plus/minus alpha (+1.414 and −1.414: axial points), plus/minus 1 (factorial points) and the center point were optimized for particle size (PS-Y1), entrapment efficacy (EE-Y2) and stability index (SI-Y3). Based on the desirability approach, a formulation containing poloxamer 188 0.24% and chitosan 0.43% renders the prerequisites of optimum formulation for preparing SIM–QRC NP-loaded ISG. Scanning microscopy showed spherical SIM-NPs, indicating monodispersity in the range of 0.50 ± 0.04 nm with a charge of +32.42 mV. The optimized formulation indicated the highest EE 79.67% and better stability at 4 °C. Drug release from SIM–QRC NP-loaded ISG was slower to plateau by up to 96 h and, at the end of 168 h, only 65.12% of SIM was released in a more controlled manner in comparison to SIM–QRC NPs and plain SIM. ISG formulation showed a considerable increase in apoptosis occurrence through caspase-3 mediation and it also enhanced the tumor suppressor protein levels. Enhanced biological activity of SIM was observed due to QRC enabling promising drug and polymer synergistic interaction. The proposed formulation can provide a breakthrough in localized therapy, overcoming the potential drawbacks of systemic chemotherapy for tongue carcinoma.

Abstract
Background Lymph node metastasis is one of the most important factors affecting the prognosis of tongue cancer, and the molecular mechanism regulating lymph node metastasis of tongue cancer is poorly known. Methods The gene expression dataset GSE2280 and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) tongue cancer dataset were downloaded. R software was used to identify the differentially expressed hallmark gene sets and individual genes between metastatic lymph node tissues and primary tongue cancer tissues, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to evaluate the association with overall survival. The screening and validation of functional genes was performed using western blot, q-PCR, CCK-8, migration and invasion assays, and lymphangiogenesis was examined by using a tube formation assay. Results Thirteen common hallmark gene sets were found based on Gene Set Variation Analysis (GSVA) and then subjected to differential gene expression analysis, by which 76 deregulated genes were found. Gene coexpression network analysis and survival analysis further confirmed that IER3 was the key gene associated with the prognosis and lymph node metastasis of tongue cancer patients. Knockdown of IER3 with siRNA inhibited the proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion of Tca-8113 cells in vitro and it also inhibited the secretion and expression of VEGF-C in these cells. The culture supernatant of Tca-8113 cells could promote lymphangiogenesis and migration of lymphatic endothelial cells, and knockdown of IER3 in Tca-8113 cells suppressed these processes. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that IER3 plays important roles in lymphangiogenesis regulation and prognosis in tongue cancer and might be a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
The tongue plays a fundamental role in several body functions such as swallowing, breathing, speaking, and chewing. Its action is not confined to the oral cavity, but it affects lower limb muscle strength and posture. The tongue is an organ that has an autocrine/paracrine mechanism of action to synthesize different substances to interact with the whole body; according to a line of thought, it is also an extension of the enteric system. The aim of this study was to review the functions of the tongue and its anatomical association with the body system. According to the authors' knowledge, this is the first scientific article focusing on the tongue in a systemic context. In a clinical evaluation, connections with the tongue should be considered to optimize the clinical examination of the tongue and therefore enhance rehabilitation programs and therapeutic results.
