Abstract
Recent investigations reported in the open literature concerning the functionalization of graphene as a support material for transition metal nanoparticle catalysts have examined isolated systems for their potential Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) activity. In this work we present results which characterize the ability to use functionalized graphene (via dopants B, N) to upshift and downshift the adsorption energy of mono-atomic oxygen, O* (the ORR activity descriptor on ORR Volcano Plots), for various compositions of 4-atom, 7-atom, and 19-atom sub-nanometer binary alloy/intermetallic transition metal nanoparticle catalysts on graphene (TMNP-MDG). Our results show several important and interesting features: (1) that the combination of geometric and electronic effects makes development of simple linear mixing rules for size/composition difficult; (2) that the transition from 4- to 7- to 19-atom TMNP on MDG has pronounced effects on ORR activity for all compositions; (3) that the use of B and N as dopants to modulate the graphene-TMNP electronic structure interaction can cause shifts in the oxygen adsorption energy of 0.5 eV or more; (4) that it might be possible to make specific doped-graphene-NixCuy TMNP systems which fall close to the Volcano Peak for ORR. Our results point to systems which should be investigated experimentally and may improve the viability of future fuel cell or other ORR applications, and provide new paths for future investigations of more detail for TMNP-MDG screening.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) noble metal nanoassemblies composed of one-dimensional (1D) nanowires have been attracting much interest due to the unique physical and chemical properties of 1D nanowires as well as the particular interconnected open-pore structure of 3D nanoassemblies. In this work, well-defined Au/Pt wire nanoassemblies were synthesized by using a facile NaBH4 reduction method in the presence of a branched form of polyethyleneimine (PEI). A study of the growth mechanism indicated the morphology of the final product to be highly related to the molecular structure of the polymeric amine. Also, the preferred Pt-on-Pt deposition contributed to the formation of the 1D Pt nanowires. The Au/Pt wire nanoassemblies were functionalized with PEI at the same time that these nanoassemblies were synthesized due to the strong N-Pt bond. The chemically functionalized Au/Pt wire nanoassemblies exhibited better electrocatalytic activity for the electro-oxidation of oxalic acid than did commercial Pt black.

Abstract
Nanopatterning and functionalizing of graphene is often required to tune or enhance its unique physical properties. However, complex processes are needed to overcome the chemical incompatibilities between the patterning template, the functional small molecules or nanoparticles, and the underlying graphene. We present a block copolymer (BCP)-based supramolecular thin film as a versatile platform for the generation of periodic patterns of small molecules and ordered assemblies of nanoparticles on top of a graphene substrate without chemical modification of any components. The present approach opens opportunities to readily pattern and functionalize graphene, and to investigate the structure-property correlations of graphene/nanoparticle and graphene/small molecule composite materials.

Abstract
The electrochemical reduction of highly oxidized unsupported graphene oxide nanosheets and its platinum electrodeposition was done by the rotating disk slurry electrode technique. Avoiding the use of a solid electrode, graphene oxide was electrochemically reduced in a slurry solution with a scalable process without the use of a reducing agent. Graphene oxide nanosheets were synthesized from carbon platelet nanofibers to obtain highly hydrophilic layers of less than 250 nm in width. The graphene oxide and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide/Pt (erGOx/Pt) hybrid materials were characterized through different spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. Pt nanoparticles with 100 facets, clusters, and atoms at erGOx were identified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the electrocatalytic activity of the highly dispersed erGOx/Pt hybrid material toward the oxidation of ammonia, which showed a 5-fold current density increase when compared with commercially available Vulcan/Pt 20%. This is in agreement with having Pt (100) facets present in the HRTEM images of the erGOx/Pt material.
