Calcined Aluminum Sludge as a Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Catalyst for Methylene Blue Degradation by Three-Dimensional Electrochemical System

Role of tea polyphenols in enhancing the performance, sustainability, and catalytic cleaning capability of membrane separation for water-soluble pollutant removal

Tea polyphenols (TPs), like green tea polyphenol (GTP) and black tea polyphenol (BTP), with phenolic hydroxyl structures, form coordination and hydrogen bonds, making them effective for bridging inorganic catalysts and membranes. Here, TPs were employed as interface agents for the preparation of TPs-modified needle-clustered NiCo-layered double hydroxide/graphene oxide membranes (NiCo-LDH-TPs/GO). The incorporation of porous guest material, NiCo-LDH-TPs, facilitated water channel expansion, enhancing membrane permeability and resulting in the development of high-performance, sustainable catalytic cleaning membranes. The introduction of TPs through coordination weakened the surface electronegativity of NiCo-LDH, promoting a uniform mixed dispersion with GO and facilitating membrane self-assembly. NiCo-LDH-GTP/GO-5 and NiCo-LDH-BTP/GO-5 membranes demonstrated permeances of 85.98 and 90.76 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, respectively, with rejections of 98.73% and 99.54% for methylene blue (MB). Notably, the NiCo-LDH-BTP/GO-5 membrane maintained a high rejection of 97.11% even after 18 cycles in the catalytic cleaning process. Furthermore, the modification of GTP and BTP enhanced MB degradation through PMS activation, resulting in a 0.33% and 0.35% increase in the reaction rate constants of NiCo-LDH, respectively, while reducing metal ion spillover. These findings highlighted the potential of TPs in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of catalytic cleaning GO membranes for water purification and separation processes.

Hydroxylamine facilitated catalytic degradation of methylene blue in a Fenton-like system for heat-treatment modified drinking water treatment residues

Rational treatment of drinking water treatment residues (WTR) has become an environmental and social issue due to the risk of secondary contamination. WTR has been commonly used to prepare adsorbents because of its clay-like pore structure, but then requires further treatment. In this study, a Fenton-like system of H-WTR/HA/H₂O₂ was constructed to degrade organic pollutants in water. Specifically, WTR was modified by heat treatment to increase its adsorption active site, and to accelerate Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling on the catalyst surface by the addition of hydroxylamine (HA). Moreover, the effects of pH, HA and H₂O₂ dosage on the degradation were discussed with methylene blue (MB) as the target pollutant. The mechanism of the action of HA was analyzed and the reactive oxygen species in the reaction system were determined. Combined with the reusability and stability experiments, the removal efficiency of MB remained 65.36% after 5 cycles. Consequently, this study may provide new insights into the resource utilization of WTR.

Removal of bisphenol A and methylene blue through persulfate activation by calcinated α-MnO2 nanorods: effect of ultrasonic assistance and toxicity assessment

This work investigates the efficacy of α-MnO₂ nanorods for persulfate-mediated degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and methylene blue (MB), in silent and ultrasonic-assisted systems. The conversion of α-MnO₂ nanoparticle flakes to nanorods occurs upon calcination at a temperature of 400 °C for 3 h under the ramping conditions. The comparative characterization of nanomaterials pre- and post-calcination reveals better physical, chemical, and thermal properties of α-MnO₂ nanorods. The impact of various operational parameters such as pH, dosage of nanorods, persulfate dose, selected contaminant concentration, ultrasound frequency and power, scavengers, and landfill leachate medium on the degradation of pollutants is also assessed. The ultrasonic assistance yields higher removal for both BPA and MB than the silent system. This may be attributed to the generation of more radicals as ultrasound activates persulfate. This can be due to acoustic cavitation, which leads to better solute dissociation and excited state. The results obtained through scavenger tests reveal that both OH^• and SO₄^•- can contribute to degradation, but the role of SO₄^•- is found dominant. Significant removal of BPA and MB ((BPA)_silent, 87.12%; (MB)_silent, 96.54%; (BPA)_ultrasonic, 88.75%; (MB)_ultrasonic, 93.86%)) is observed in landfill leachate medium. The degradation pathway for pollutants is also proposed. The toxicity of pollutants and their degradation intermediates are evaluated using Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) program. The results indicate reduced toxicity of BPA intermediates, while most MB degradation intermediates show higher toxicity. Therefore, it can be affirmed that removing pollutants does not ensure a completely non-toxic process. However, the study proposes a comprehensive toxicity evaluation and eliminating toxic intermediates for completely harmless wastewater treatment.
