A systematic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Listeria species in food, animal and human specimens in Iran

Investigation of the seasonal prevalence, phenotypic, and genotypic characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes in slaughterhouses in Burdur

AIM

This study examined Listeria monocytogenes isolates from two slaughterhouses in Burdur province, southern Turkey, over four seasons for antibiotic resistance, serogroups, virulence genes, in vitro biofilm forming capacity, and genetic relatedness.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Carcass (540) and environment-equipment surface (180) samples were collected from two slaughterhouses (S1, S2) for 1 year (4 samplings). Of the 89 (12.4%) positive isolates, 48 (53.9%) were from animal carcasses, and 41 (46.1%) from the environment-equipment surfaces. Autumn was the peak season for Listeria monocytogenes compared to summer and spring (P < 0.05). In addition, the most common serotype between seasons was 1/2c. Except for plcA and luxS genes, all isolates (100%) harbored inlA, inlC, inlJ, hlyA, actA, iap, flaA genes. Listeria monocytogenes isolates were identified as belonging to IIc (1/2c-3c; 68.5%), IVb (4b-4d-4e; 29.2%), and IIa (1/2a-3a; 2.2%) in the screening using multiplex polymerase chain reaction-based serogrouping test. A total of 65 pulsotypes and 13 clusters with at least 80% homology were determined by using pulsed field gel electrophoresis on samples that had been digested with ApaI. Thirty-four (38.2%) of the isolates were not resistant to any of the 14 antibiotics tested. The antibiotic to which the isolates showed the most resistance was rifampicin (44.9%). Serotype 1/2c was the most resistant serotype to antibiotics. Despite having biofilm-associated genes (inlA, inlB, actA, flaA, and luxS), a minority (11%) of isolates formed weak biofilm.

CONCLUSION

This study revealed seasonal changes prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes, particularly higher in autumn, posing a greater risk of meat contamination. Notably, Serotype 1/2c showed significant prevalence and antibiotic resistance. Indistinguishable isolates indicated cross-contamination, underscoring the importance of prioritized training for slaughterhouse personnel in sanitation and hygiene protocols.

Research on the drug resistance mechanism of foodborne pathogens

Foodborne diseases caused by foodborne pathogens are one of the main problems threatening human health and safety. The emergence of multi-drug resistant strains due to the abuse of antibiotics has increased the difficulty of clinical treatment. Research on the drug resistance mechanism of foodborne pathogens has become an effective method to solve multi-drug resistant strains. In this paper, the four main drug resistance mechanisms, including reduced cell membrane permeability, efflux pump mechanism, target site mutation mechanism, and enzymatic hydrolysis, were used to systematically analyze the drug resistance of Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia coli. And the new methods were discussed that may be used to solve the drug resistance of foodborne pathogens such as CRISPR and bacteriophages. This review provided a certain theoretical basis for the treatment of foodborne diseases.

Extraintestinal infection of Listeria monocytogenes and susceptibility to spontaneous abortion during pregnancy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is one of the most important zoonotic bacteria that is transmitted to humans through infected animal products and is the cause of human listeriosis. Pregnant women and immunocompromised patients are more susceptible to the bacterium than healthy people. Recent studies have reported extensive evidence on the role of L. monocytogenes infection and the risk of spontaneous abortion.

AIM

To evaluate the possible connection with L. monocytogenes in the risk of spontaneous abortion in pregnancy.

METHODS

We conducted a systematic literature review using several databases to search the relevant case-control studies on the association between L. monocytogenes infection and spontaneous abortion. Finally, the impact of infection with L. monocytogenes and risk of spontaneous abortion was assessed via odds ratio at corresponding 95% confidence intervals.

RESULTS

In the present study, we evaluated the data of 4059 pregnant women who had a spontaneous abortion, and interestingly their colonization rate of L. monocytogenes was about 20.5%.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, based on statistical analysis, we found that there is a significant relationship between the infection with L. monocytogenes and spontaneous abortion.

Prevalence and concentration of fumonisins in cereal-based foods: a global systematic review and meta-analysis study

Cereal-based foods are utilized as an essential food segment worldwide. Nevertheless, their contamination by mycotoxins, also fumonisins, could pose a critical health risk. The present research provides the first systematic review regarding the prevalence and concentration of fumonisins in cereal-based food with the aid of a meta-analysis. In this regard, some international databases PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus were explored during the last 30 years. Among 9729 screened articles, 73 articles (which meet the proposed inclusion criteria), including 11,132 data, were incorporated in the performed meta-analysis. The overall rank order regarding the concentration of fumonisins in cereal-based foods was corn-based foods > wheat-based foods > other cereal foods > barley-based foods > rice-based foods > oat-based foods. Based on the prevalence of fumonisins, the overall rank order was other cereal foods > corn-based foods > rice-based foods > wheat-based foods > oat-based foods > barley-based food. The present meta-analysis results can be a beneficial database for risk assessment model progress, which can help industries and organizations decrease the presence of fumonisins in cereal-based food.

Antimicrobial activity of enterocins against Listeria sp. and other food spoilage bacteria

OBJECTIVE

To determine bacteriocin producers and the prevalence of structural enterocin genes and to detect the spectrum of activity against foodborne pathogens, from isolates of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis that were isolated from food and the environment.

RESULTS

The entA, entB, entP, ent1071 and entX genes, which encode enterocins were the most frequently observed. Enterocins were thermostable, proteinaceous, and resistant to catalase. None of the isolates produced hemolysin, and inhibition resulting from bacteriophage lysis was excluded. The bactericidal effect of enterocins against L. innocua 12612 was determined by optical density and colony forming units. For the activity spectrum, elimination of mainly Listeria strains, Bacillus sp. and clinical enterococci, was observed. Imaging with scanning electron microscopy after treatment with enterocin Efm22 showed irregular rod-shaped cells and loss of cellular integrity.

CONCLUSIONS

The isolates evaluated in this study are candidates for the production of enterocins that will be used as food biopreservatives, because they have high anti-listerial activity even after 24 h of experimentation, and used in the pharmaceutical area because they inhibit clinical microorganisms.
