Evaluation efficiency of Iranian natural zeolites and synthetic resin to removal of lead ions from aqueous solutions

Application of South African heulandite (HEU) zeolite for the adsorption and removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions from aqueous water solution: Experimental and computational study

The capacity of South African Heulandite (HEU) zeolite to remove Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solution was investigated using batch experiments and molecular simulations studies. The effect of different factors on the adsorption of these ions onto the zeolite was investigated; contact time, initial metal ion concentration and the amount of HEU adsorbent. Molecular simulations was done using Monte Carlo and density functional theory. Experimental results obtained indicate that the maximum adsorption for the two ions occur at pH 5 and after 240 min of contact time. The percent removal based on contact time of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions from water by the heulandite zeolite were 99.7 and 76.7 %, respectively. The adsorption of two metal ions onto the HEU zeolite follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. From the molecular simulation findings, the adsorption of Pb2+ ions onto the HEU window is equidistant from the two adjacent oxygen atoms within the HEU structure while the Cd2+ ion is adsorbed in the upper left side of the 8-ring HEU window. It was observed that the performance of the zeolite can significantly be improved by doping with germanium, aluminum, thallium indium, and sodium cations. These results indicate that the application of HEU zeolite as an adsorbent holds a great promise in heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions.

The effects of anaerobic reactor post-treatments by rapid filtration systems and conventional techniques

Although anaerobic reactors are an excellent alternative in the treatment of domestic effluents, they have the disadvantage of requiring post-treatment. Many technologies have been studied and, recently, rapid filtration systems have been presented as a viable alternative for post-treatment. This work compared post-treatment techniques for anaerobic upflow sludge blanket (UASB) reactors by rapid filtration systems (double filtration (DF); triple filtration with clinoptilolite (TFc); and triple filtration with activated carbon (TFac)) to conventional systems (facultative pond (FP); biological filter (BF); biological filter with recirculation and decantation (BFD)), verifying their potential for improvement of the final effluent quality. The UASB effluent post-treatments by FP, BF, BFD, DF, TFc, and TFac were evaluated. The removal of turbidity in both BFD and FP post-treatments was below 75%. The DF, TFc, and TFac treatments showed over 99% removal of the same parameters. COD removal in the FP, BF, and BFD post-treatments was over 10%, while in the DF, TFc, and TFac treatments, it was over 80%. The greatest total phosphorus removal was observed in TFc and TFac, whose values were over 99%. The best removal of ammoniacal nitrogen, 99% was observed in the TFc treatment. Regarding Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn removal, all rapid filtration systems showed better performance when compared to conventional systems. The DF, TFc, and TFac systems showed over 90% removal of most metals evaluated, while the FP and BF treatments presented values below 50% for most metals, and in the BFD system, the removal values were below 80% for most metals. The results indicate that rapid filtration systems were better at removing all evaluated parameters when compared to conventional systems.

Kinetics and Equilibrium Studies for the Removal of Mn and Fe from Binary Metal Solution Systems Using a Romanian Thermally Activated Natural Zeolite

In the present study, the sorption behavior of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) from a binary metal solution system onto thermally activated natural zeolite was studied. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of zeolite quantity, particle size, and activation temperature. Equilibrium studies were carried out to evaluate the adsorption capacity of the thermally activated natural zeolite. The obtained results showed that the thermally activated natural zeolite favored the removal of Fe over Mn, due to competition between them. Elemental analysis of the activated zeolite samples obtained by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) indicated a Si/Al ratio >4, which is specific for clinoptilolite-type zeolite. The removal of Fe and Mn was best described by the Langmuir model, indicating the formation of a monolayer on the surface of the activated natural zeolite. The kinetic results revealed that the experimental data were best fitted by the pseudo-second-order model for both metals. The results suggest that a new natural zeolite from Rupea quarry, Brașov County, Romania could be used as a potential adsorbent for removal of Fe and Mn from binary metal solution systems, addressing the lack of information about this material from this region.
