An effective approach to study the biocompatibility of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, graphene and their nanohybrid composite

Efficient biodechlorination at the Fe3O4-based silicone powder modified chlorobenzene-affinity anode

The treatment of chlorinated volatile organic compounds faces challenges of secondary pollution and less-efficiency due to the substitution of chlorine. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide a promising opportunity for its abatement. In this study, a novel Fe3O4 nanoparticles and silicone-based powder (SP) were integrated and immobilized on carbon felt (CF+Fe3O4@SP), which was further used as anode in the chlorobenzene (CB) powered MFC. Owing to the cooperation between SP and Fe3O4, the anode exhibited excellent performance for both biodechlorination and power generation. The results indicated that the CF+Fe3O4@SP anode loaded MFC achieved 98.5% removal of 200 mg/L CB within 28 h, and the maximum power density was 675.9 mW/m3, which was a 45.6% increase compared to that of the bare CF anode. Microbial community analysis indicated that the genera Comamonadaceae, Pandoraea, Obscuribacteraceae, and Truepera were dominated, especially, the Comamonadaceae and Obscuribacteraceae showed outstanding affinity for Fe3O4 and SP, respectively. Moreover, the proportion of live bacteria, secretion of extracellular polymer substances, and protein content in the extracellular polymer substances were significantly increased by modifying Fe3O4@SP onto the carbon-based anode. Thus, this study provides new insights into the development of MFCs for refractory and hydrophobic volatile organic compounds removal.

Co-doped Fe3O4/α-FeOOH for highly efficient peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade trimethoprim: Occurrence of hybrid non-radical and radical pathways

Trimethoprim (TMP), as a widely used chemotherapeutic antibiotic agent, has caused potential risks to the aquatic environment. In this study, magnetic Co-doped Fe₃O₄/α-FeOOH was fabricated by a facile one-step ageing method and used for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in TMP degradation. It was found that low catalyst (0.5 g/L) and PMS addition (0.2 mM) led to the high degradation efficiency of TMP (97.2%, k_obs = 0.11211 min^-1) over a wide range of pH. The oxidation of active radical (SO₄·^-) and non-radical singlet oxygen (¹O₂) co-acted on TMP degradation. Besides, PMS was activated through the cycles between Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III). Fifteen degradation intermediates of TMP were identified by LC-MS, and three possible degradation pathways including hydroxylation, demethylation, and cleavage were proposed. The recovered catalysts exhibited high stability and reusability, maintaining 80% TMP removal efficiency with inappreciable metal leaching (0.012 mg/L of Co, 0.113 mg/L of Fe) after six cycles. Besides, the Co-Fe₃O₄/α-FeOOH/PMS system was highly tolerant to inorganic anions and actual water bodies (river water, lake water, tap water, and sewage plant effluent). Overall, this work provided a promising way to the potential application of Fe-based binary metal oxide for PMS activation.

Enhanced phosphate remediation of contaminated natural water by magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@engineering nanomaterials (ZIF8@ENMs)

The efficient enrichment and reutilization of phosphate from natural water still remains a daunting challenge to satisfy the increasingly stringent phosphate discharge criteria. In response to this problem, the presented study successfully synthesizes a series of magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@engineering nanomaterials (ZIF8@ENMs) via a two-step hydrothermal and coprecipitation method by facilely growing ZIF8 and/or Fe₃O₄ on various functional ENMs. Structure morphology, chemical composition and hysteresis curve characterizations demonstrate the successful formation of magnetic Fe₃O₄-ZIF8@ENM. Amongst the prepared magnetic ZIF8@ENMs hybrids, the Fe₃O₄-ZIF8@ENMs possessing massive hydroxyl groups is demonstrated to harvest the maximum adsorption capacity of 441.7 mg g^-1 under neutral condition. Such-acquired adsorption capacity evidently surpass state-of-the-art adsorbents. Systematic assessment of the chemical condition effects on phosphate removal, revealing its conspicuous merits of robust pH independence (94.63-98.20%), high selectivity pinpointing phosphate within complex cations, ease-of-separation and satisfactory recycle. The outstanding performance of magnetic ZIF8@ENMs are mainly derived from the formed strong ZnOP, FeOP and electrostatic interactions between phosphate and adsorbents. Along this line, designing magnetic MOFs-based hybrids towards phosphate are anticipated to be promising avenues for advanced treatment of phosphate-like contaminants and efficient recycle in practical applications.

Graphene-Induced Room Temperature Ferromagnetism in Cobalt Nanoparticles Decorated Graphene Nanohybrid

Control over the magnetic interactions in magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is a crucial issue to the future development of nanometer-sized integrated "spintronic" applications. Here, we have developed a nanohybrid structure to achieve room temperature ferromagnetism, via a facile, effective, and reproducible solvothermal synthesis method. The plan has been put onto cobalt (Co) NPs, where the growth of Co NPs on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets switches the magnetic interactions from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic at room temperature. Switching-on ferromagnetism in this nanohybrid may be due to the hybridization between unsaturated 2p_z orbitals of graphene and 3d orbitals of Co, which promotes ferromagnetic long-range ordering. The ferromagnetic behavior of Co-rGO nanohybrid makes it excellent material in the field of spintronics, catalysis, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Two dimensional carbon based nanocomposites as multimodal therapeutic and diagnostic platform: A biomedical and toxicological perspective

Graphene based nanocomposites have revolutionized cancer treatment, diagnosis and imaging owing to its good compatibility, elegant flexibility, high surface area, low mass density along with excellent combined additive effect of graphene with other nanomaterials. This review inculcates the type of graphene based nanocomposites and their fabrication techniques to improve its properties as photothermal and theranostic platform. With decades' efforts, many significant breakthroughs in the method of synthesis and characterization in addition to various functionalization options of graphene based nanocomposite have paved a solid foundation for their potential applications in the cancer therapy. This work intends to provide a thorough, up-to-date holistic discussion on correlation of breakthroughs with their biomedical applications and illustrate how to utilize these breakthroughs to address long-standing challenges in the clinical translation of nanomedicines. This review also emphasizes on graphene based nanocomposites based toxicity concerns pertaining to delivery platforms.
