Bactericidal behavior of chemically exfoliated boron nitride nanosheets doped with zirconium

Construction of a novel ternary synergistic CuFe2O4-SnO2-rGO heterojunction for efficient removal of cyanide from contaminated water

Many industrial effluents release cyanide, a well-known hazardous and bio-recalcitrant pollutant, and thus, the treatment of cyanide wastewater is a major challenge. In the current study, a CuFe2O4-SnO2-rGO nanocomposite was synthesized to remove cyanide from an aqueous system. The structural and morphological characterizations of the nanomaterials were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectra (EDX) analysis. The results revealed that almost 97.7% cyanide removal occurred using the nanocomposite at an initial concentration of 100 mg L-1 within 1 h. The experimental data were fitted to various adsorption models, among which the Langmuir model fitted the data very well, confirming the monolayer adsorption process. The kinetic investigation revealed that the cyanide adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a chemisorption process with a high cyanide adsorption capacity of 114 mg g-1. The result of the intraparticulate diffusion model fitting revealed a decreasing slope value (K) from stage 1 to stage 2, indicating that external mass transfer is the predominating step. Moreover, the CuFe2O4-SnO2-rGO nanocomposite shows excellent reusability.

A novel facile synthesis of metal nitride@metal oxide (BN/Gd2O3) nanocomposite and their antibacterial and anticancer activities

In this study, a novel core/shell nanocomposite structure (h-BN@Gd2O3 NCs) was created for the first time by combining hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with doped gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) using different laser pulse numbers, i.e., 150, 338, and 772 pulses. We employed various analytical techniques, including mapping analysis, FE-SEM, EDS, HRTEM, SAED, XRD, zeta potential analysis, DLS, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and PL measurements, to characterize the synthesized h-BN, c-Gd2O3, and h-BN@Gd2O3 NCs (338 pulses). XRD results indicated hexagonal and cubic crystal structures for BN and Gd2O3, respectively, while EDS confirmed their chemical composition and elemental mapping. Chemical bonds between B-N-Gd, B-N-O, and Gd-O bands at 412, 455, 474, and 520 cm-1 were identified by FTIR analysis. The antimicrobial and anticancer activities of these NCs using agar well diffusion and MTT assays. They exhibited potent antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. Furthermore, NCs have reduced the proliferation of cancerous cells, i.e., human colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) and human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), while not affecting the proliferation of the normal breast cell line (MCF-10). The anticancer efficacy of NCs was validated by the AO/EtBr assay, which confirmed apoptotic cell death. Blood compatibility on human erythrocytes was also confirmed by hemolytic and in vitro toxicity assessments. The compiled results of the study proposed these nanoparticles could be used as a promising drug delivery system and potentially in healthcare applications.

Synergetic effects of boron nitride with waste zirconia: Evaluation of instantaneous fingerprint detection and mechanical properties for biomedical applications

Herein, present study mainly focuses on the synthesis and characterizations of boron nitride reinforced waste zirconia (wZrO2) with different concentrations. Composites were prepared via a scalable solid-state reaction method. Various physical parameters such as density, ionic concentration, polaron radius, and field strength were evaluated. XRD results reveal crystalline nature with a major phase of tetragonal zirconia and as boron nitride is reinforced, the tetragonal transforms into a monoclinic zirconia. Interconnected spherical grains and nanosheets were observed using FESEM. Mechanical characterizations revealed the highest compressive strength of 266 MPa. The latent fingerprints were visualized using a composite on different surfaces, implementing the powder dusting and solution techniques. MTT assay was performed and revealed good biocompatible nature. These results reveal that composite is suitable for fabrication of bioceramics with acceptable mechanical and biological performances. The composite can also be utilized for latent fingerprint detection in forensic science.

Boron nitride decorated poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) composite nanofibers: A promising material for biomedical applications

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) nanofibers loaded with boron nitride nanoparticles (mBN) were fabricated by using electrospinning and crosslinked by heat treatment. The physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, hydrophilic behavior, and degradability of composite nanofibers were evaluated. The mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, elongation percentage at the break, and mechanical strength of PVA/PAA nanofibers improved with mBN loading. The thermal conductivity of composite nanofibers reached 0.12 W/m·K at mBN content of 1.0 wt% due to the continuous heat conduction pathways of mBN. In the meantime, while there was no cytotoxicity recorded for both L929 and HUVEC cell lines for all composite nanofibers, the antimicrobial efficiency improved with the incorporation of mBN compared with PVA/PAA and recorded as 68.8% and 75.1% for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. On this basis, the present work proposes a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications such as dual drug delivery, particularly including both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs or wound dressing.

Injectable, Self-Healing and Multiple Responsive Histamine Modified Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels with Potentialities in Drug Delivery, Antibacterial and Tissue Engineering

Hydrogels are 3D network structures composed of physically or chemically crosslinked, hydrophilic molecules. Compared with conventional hydrogels with static and permanent network structures, injectable and responsive hydrogels generated from dynamic networks, have attracted increasing attention from various disciplines due to their wide-ranging applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, soft robotics, etc. Herein, an injectable self-healing and multiple-responsive hyaluronic acid (HA)- histamine (His)/metal hydrogel is developed by modifying His onto HA and the subsequent, dynamic coordination between imidazole and metal ions. The pH-responsive and mechanical behaviors exhibited by the HA-His/metal hydrogels are tunable with the kinds and the concentrations of metal ions. The HA-His/Zr⁴⁺ hydrogels demonstrate a moldable capability at a neutral pH and a multi-stimulus-responsive capability when exposed to a weak alkaline environment and hyaluronidase, which inhibits bacterial growth and biofilm formation. Biocompatibilities and accelerated wound healing are demonstrated in vitro and in vivo and are thoroughly investigated and well characterized. The HA-His/Zr⁴⁺ hydrogel has great potential in various biomedical applications, such as pH- and hyaluronidase-responsive sustained release, antibacterial, and implantable materials for tissue engineering.

Nanomaterial-Based Antimicrobial Coating for Biomedical Implants: New Age Solution for Biofilm-Associated Infections

Recently, the upsurge in hospital-acquired diseases has put global health at risk. Biomedical implants being the primary source of contamination, the development of biomedical implants with antimicrobial coatings has attracted the attention of a large group of researchers from around the globe. Bacteria develops biofilms on the surface of implants, making it challenging to eradicate them with the standard approach of administering antibiotics. A further issue of current concern is the fast resurgence of resistance to conventional antibiotics. As nanotechnology continues to advance, various types of nanomaterials have been created, including 2D nanoparticles and metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with antimicrobial properties. Researchers from all over the world are using these materials as a coating agent for biomedical implants to create an antimicrobial environment. This comprehensive and contemporary review summarizes various metals, metal oxide nanoparticles, 2D nanomaterials, and their composites that have been used or may be used in the future as an antimicrobial coating agent for biomedical implants, as well as their succinct mode of action to combat biofilm-associated infection and diseases.

Reactive metal boride nanoparticles trap lipopolysaccharide and peptidoglycan for bacteria-infected wound healing

Bacteria and excessive inflammation are two main factors causing non-healing wounds. However, current studies have mainly focused on the inhibition of bacteria survival for wound healing while ignoring the excessive inflammation induced by dead bacteria-released lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or peptidoglycan (PGN). Herein, a boron-trapping strategy has been proposed to prevent both infection and excessive inflammation by synthesizing a class of reactive metal boride nanoparticles (MB NPs). Our results show that the MB NPs are gradually hydrolyzed to generate boron dihydroxy groups and metal cations while generating a local alkaline microenvironment. This microenvironment greatly enhances boron dihydroxy groups to trap LPS or PGN through an esterification reaction, which not only enhances metal cation-induced bacterial death but also inhibits dead bacteria-induced excessive inflammation both in vitro and in vivo, finally accelerating wound healing. Taken together, this boron-trapping strategy provides an approach to the treatment of bacterial infection and the accompanying inflammation.

Recent Progress in Fabrication and Application of BN Nanostructures and BN-Based Nanohybrids

Due to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, such as a low specific density, large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, low friction, good dispersion stability, enhanced adsorbing capacity, large interlayer shear force, and wide bandgap, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanostructures are of great interest in many fields. These include, but are not limited to, (i) heterogeneous catalysts, (ii) promising nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery to tumor cells and nanoparticles containing therapeutic agents to fight bacterial and fungal infections, (iii) reinforcing phases in metal, ceramics, and polymer matrix composites, (iv) additives to liquid lubricants, (v) substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, (vi) agents for boron neutron capture therapy, (vii) water purifiers, (viii) gas and biological sensors, and (ix) quantum dots, single photon emitters, and heterostructures for electronic, plasmonic, optical, optoelectronic, semiconductor, and magnetic devices. All of these areas are developing rapidly. Thus, the goal of this review is to analyze the critical mass of knowledge and the current state-of-the-art in the field of BN-based nanomaterial fabrication and application based on their amazing properties.

Boron Nitride Nanosheets Can Induce Water Channels Across Lipid Bilayers Leading to Lysosomal Permeabilization

While the interaction between 2D materials and cells is of key importance to the development of nanomedicines and safe applications of nanotechnology, still little is known about the biological interactions of many emerging 2D materials. Here, an investigation of how hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) interacts with the cell membrane is carried out by combining molecular dynamics (MD), liquid-phase exfoliation, and in vitro imaging methods. MD simulations reveal that a sharp hBN wedge can penetrate a lipid bilayer and form a cross-membrane water channel along its exposed polar edges, while a round hBN sheet does not exhibit this behavior. It is hypothesized that such water channels can facilitate cross-membrane transport, with important consequences including lysosomal membrane permeabilization, an emerging mechanism of cellular toxicity that involves the release of cathepsin B and generation of radical oxygen species leading to cell apoptosis. To test this hypothesis, two types of hBN nanosheets, one with a rhomboidal, cornered morphology and one with a round morphology, are prepared, and human lung epithelial cells are exposed to both materials. The cornered hBN with lateral polar edges results in a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect, whereas round hBN does not cause significant toxicity, thus confirming our premise.

The Synthesis and Characterization of h-BN Nanosheets with High Yield and Crystallinity

Nowadays, boron nitride (BN) has attracted a great deal of attention due to its physical and chemical properties, such as high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, heat conduction, electrical insulation, and neutron absorption. The unique lamellar, reticular, and tubular morphologies and physicochemical properties of BN make it attractive in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, hydrogen storage, thermal conduction, insulation, dielectric substrate of electronic devices, radiation protection, polymer composites, medicine, etc. Based on this, we propose a novel method to produce boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) by a two-step method. The structure and morphology of the prepared BNNSs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, XRD, FTIR, etc. The results showed that the prepared BNNSs had high crystallinity and the stripping efficiency of h-BN as well as the performance and yield of BNNSs had been improved, and the cost and environmental pollution of BNNS preparation had been reduced accordingly.

Methods of hexagonal boron nitride exfoliation and its functionalization: covalent and non-covalent approaches

The exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNSs) from bulk hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) materials has received intense interest owing to their fascinating physical, chemical, and biological properties. Numerous exfoliation techniques offer scalable approaches for harvesting single-layer or few-layer h-BNNSs. Their structure is very comparable to graphite, and they have numerous significant applications owing to their superb thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical performance. Exfoliation from bulk stacked h-BN is the most cost-effective way to obtain large quantities of few layer h-BN. Herein, numerous methods have been discussed to achieve the exfoliation of h-BN, each with advantages and disadvantages. Herein, we describe the existing exfoliation methods used to fabricate single-layer materials. Besides exfoliation methods, various functionalization methods, such as covalent, non-covalent, and Lewis acid-base approaches, including physical and chemical methods, are extensively described for the preparation of several h-BNNS derivatives. Moreover, the unique and potent characteristics of functionalized h-BNNSs, like enhanced solubility in water, improved thermal conductivity, stability, and excellent biocompatibility, lead to certain extensive applications in the areas of biomedical science, electronics, novel polymeric composites, and UV photodetectors, and these are also highlighted.

Comparative antibacterial activity of 2D materials coated on porous-titania

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a well-established technique for the treatment of titanium-based materials. The formed titania-PEO surface can improve the osseointegration properties of titanium implants. Nevertheless, it can not address bacterial infection problems associated with bone implants. Recently, 2-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene oxide (GO), MXene, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have received considerable attention for surface modifications showing their antibacterial properties. In this paper, a comparative study on the effect of partial deposition of these three materials over PEO titania substrates on the antibacterial efficiency and bioactivity is presented. Their partial deposition through drop-casting instead of continuous film coating is propsed to simultaneously address both antibacterial and osseointegration abilities. Our results demonstrate the dose-dependent nature of the deposited antibacterial agent on the PEO substrate. GO-PEO and MXene-PEO samples showed the highest antibacterial activity with 70 (±2) % and 97 (±0.5) % inactivation of S. aureus colonies in the low concentration group, respectively. Furthermore, only samples in the higher concentration group were effective against E. coli bacteria with 18 (±2) % and 17 (±4) % decrease in numbers of colonies for hBN-PEO and GO-PEO samples, respectively. Moreover, all antibacterial samples demonstrated acceptable bioactivity and good biocompatibility, making them a considerable candidates for the next generation of antibacterial titanium implants.

Impact of Bi Doping into Boron Nitride Nanosheets on Electronic and Optical Properties Using Theoretical Calculations and Experiments

In the present work, boron nitride (BN) nanosheets were prepared through bulk BN liquid phase exfoliation while various wt. ratios (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10) of bismuth (Bi) were incorporated as dopant using hydrothermal technique. Our findings exhibit that the optical investigation showed absorption spectra in near UV region. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Bi doping has led to various modifications in the electronic structures of BN nanosheet by inducing new localized gap states around the Fermi level. It was found that bandgap energy decrease with the increase of Bi dopant concentrations. Therefore, in analysis of the calculated absorption spectra, a redshift has been observed in the absorption edges, which is consistent with the experimental observation. Additionally, host and Bi-doped BN nanosheets were assessed for their catalytic and antibacterial potential. Catalytic activity of doped free and doped BN nanosheets was evaluated by assessing their performance in dye reduction/degradation process. Bactericidal activity of Bi-doped BN nanosheets resulted in enhanced efficiency measured at 0-33.8% and 43.4-60% against S. aureus and 0-38.8% and 50.5-85.8% against E. coli, respectively. Furthermore, In silico molecular docking predictions were in good agreement with in-vitro bactericidal activity. Bi-doped BN nanosheets showed good binding score against DHFR of E. coli (- 11.971 kcal/mol) and S. aureus (- 8.526 kcal/mol) while binding score for DNA gyrase from E. coli (- 6.782 kcal/mol) and S. aureus (- 7.819 kcal/mol) suggested these selected enzymes as possible target.

Algae-mediated route to biogenic cuprous oxide nanoparticles and spindle-like CaCO3: a comparative study, facile synthesis, and biological properties

Biocompatible syntheses of Cu2O nanoparticles are relatively low compared to some other reported metal oxides due to their low stability and requiring more carefully controlled synthetic conditions. In the present study, the efficiency of three brown algae (Cystoseira myrica, Sargassum latifolium and Padina australis) extracts collected from the Persian Gulf was evaluated in the biosynthesis of Cu2O nanoparticles. A fast and simplified synthesis of Cu2O nanoparticles with average size between 12 and 26 nm was successfully achieved through an eco-friendly method using the aqueous extracts of Sargassum latifolium and Cystoseira myrica. Whereas, under the same reaction conditions using Padina australis extract no Cu2O nanoparticles were produced, and unexpectedly, the results approved the formation of spindle shaped CaCO3 with average sizes of 1-2 μm in length and 300-500 nm in width. Structure, morphology and composition of the as-prepared products were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, TEM and FESEM analysis. This work confirms that the biomolecules present in algae have the ability to affect particle size, morphology, composition, and physicochemical properties of the synthesized particles. The Cu2O nanoparticles prepared in this study were stable and exhibited efficient antibacterial and anticancer activity. This biosynthesis technique can be valuable in environmental, biotechnological, pharmaceutical and medical applications.

Photocatalytic and bactericidal properties and molecular docking analysis of TiO2 nanoparticles conjugated with Zr for environmental remediation

Despite implementing several methodologies including a combination of physical, chemical and biological techniques, aquatic and microbial pollution remains a challenge to this day. Recently, nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention due to their extraordinary prospective for utilization toward environmental remediation. Among several probable candidates, TiO2 stands out due to its potential for use in multifaceted applications. One way to improve the catalytic and antimicrobial potential of TiO2 is to dope it with certain elements. In this study, Zr-doped TiO2 was synthesized through a sol-gel chemical method using various dopant concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8 wt%). Surface morphological, microstructural and elemental analysis was carried out using FESEM and HR-TEM along with EDS to confirm the formation of Zr-TiO2. XRD spectra showed a linear shift of the (101) anatase peak to lower diffraction angles (from 25.4° to 25.08°) with increasing Zr4+ concentration. Functional groups were examined via FTIR, an ample absorption band appearing between 400 and 700 cm-1 in the acquired spectrum was attributed to the vibration modes of the Ti-O-Ti linkage present within TiO2 nanoparticles, which denotes the formation of TiO2. Experimental results indicated that with increasing dopant concentrations, photocatalytic potential was enhanced significantly. In this respect, TiO2 doped with 8 wt% Zr (sample 0.08 : 1) exhibited outstanding performance by realizing 98% elimination of synthetic MB in 100 minutes. This is thought to be due to a decreased rate of electron-hole pair recombination that transpires upon doping. Therefore, it is proposed that Zr-doped TiO2 can be used as an effective photocatalyst material for various environmental and wastewater treatment applications. The good docking scores and binding confirmation of Zr-doped TiO2 suggested doped nanoparticles as a potential inhibitor against selected targets of both E. coli and S. aureus. Hence, enzyme inhibition studies of Zr-doped TiO2 NPs are suggested for further confirmation of these in silico predictions.
