Facile fabrication of superhydrophobic paper with durability, chemical stability and self-cleaning by roll coating with modified nano-TiO2

Design of chitosan-based drug-loaded laminated materials with superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic properties for simultaneous effective hemostasis and antiadhesion

Hemostatic materials play a crucial role in trauma medicine. However, existing materials have poor hemostatic efficacy and a tendency to adhere to the wound surface, limiting their clinical effectiveness. Herein, a drug-loaded, superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic laminated material (DSLM), consisting of a superhydrophobic inner layer with a micropore array, a superhydrophilic chitosan-based sponge layer loaded with hemostatic/antimicrobial drugs, and a superhydrophobic outer layer, was developed. Furthermore, the DSLM allows unidirectional flow of blood and exudates from the wound bed through the superhydrophobic inner layer while facilitating efficient drug delivery. In addition, it possesses excellent biocompatibility and antiadhesion properties, as confirmed by in vivo and in vitro experiments. Compared with traditional hemostatic materials, the DSLM remarkably increased the survival time by over threefold in the acute femoral transaction wound bleeding model, and simultaneously prevented secondary wound damage by reducing peeling force to one-eighth incomparison to pristine gauze. The DSLM holds promise as a versatile clinical biomaterial for prehospital acute trauma treatment, with its simple structure facilitating manufacturing and expanding applications in biomedicine.

Single-fibre coating and additive manufacturing of multifunctional papers

Paper-based materials with precisely designed wettabilities show great potential for fluid transport control, separation, and sensing. To tune the wettability of paper, paper sheets are usually modified after the paper manufacturing process. This limits the complexity of the local wettability design. We combined the wettability design of the individual fibres with subsequent paper sheet fabrication through either fibre deposition or fibre printing. Using silica-based cellulose fibre functionalization, the wettability of the paper sheets, containing only one specific fibre type, could be gradually tuned from highly hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic, resulting in water exclusion. The development of a silica-functionalized fibre library containing mesoporous or dense silica coatings, as well as silica with varying precursor compositions, further enabled the variation of the paper wettability and fluid flow. By combining this fibre library with the paper fabrication process by (i) fibre deposition or (ii) fibre printing, the paper wettability architecture and thus the local fibre composition were adjusted without any further processing steps. This enabled the fabrication of papers with wettability integration, such as a wettability pattern or a Janus paper design, containing wettability gradients along the paper sheet cross section. This asymmetric wettability along all three spatial dimensions enabled side-selective oil-water separation.

A review of self-cleaning photocatalytic surface: Effect of surface characteristics on photocatalytic activity for NO

Self-cleaning surface has attracted much attention in the field of photocatalytic degradation of NO due to its dirt pickup resistance and self-cleaning effect under the action of rainwater. In this review, the factors affecting NO degradation efficiency were analyzed in terms of photocatalyst characteristics and environmental conditions combined with the photocatalytic degradation mechanism. The feasibility of photocatalytic degradation of NO on superhydrophilic, superhydrophobic and superamphiphobic surfaces was discussed. Furthermore, the effect of special surface characteristics of self-cleaning on photocatalytic NO was highlighted and the improvement of the long-term effect using three self-cleaning surfaces on photocatalytic NO was evaluated and summarized. Finally, the conclusion and outlook were proposed related to the self-cleaning surface for photocatalytic degradation of NO. In future research, the comprehensive effects of the characteristics of photocatalytic materials, self-cleaning characteristics and environmental factors on the photocatalytic degradation of NO and the actual application effects of such self-cleaning photocatalytic surfaces should be further clarified in combination with the engineering. It is believed that this review can provide some theoretical basis and support for the development of self-cleaning surfaces in the field of photocatalytic degradation of NO.

Mussel-Inspired Durable TiO2/PDA-Based Superhydrophobic Paper with Excellent Self-Cleaning, High Chemical Stability, and Efficient Oil/Water Separation Properties

Oceanic oil spill and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters can cause significant threats to the ecological environment and human health. Herein, we design a durable TiO₂/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper for efficient oil/water separation. Bioinspired from mussel adhesive proteins, the mechanical durability of the as-prepared superhydrophobic paper is enhanced by the deposition of polydopamine (PDA) onto cellulosic fibers via self-polymerization of dopamine. The TiO₂/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper shows a high water contact angle of 168.2° and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, exhibiting excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. Furthermore, the as-prepared superhydrophobic paper possesses excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in corrosive solutions and solvents and boiling water and being subjected to the sandpaper abrasion test, respectively. More importantly, the separation efficiency of the TiO₂/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper for an oil/water mixture is 97.2%, and it maintains a separation efficiency above 94.3% even after 15 cyclic separation processes. Furthermore, the separation efficiency for water-in-oil emulsions is higher than 93.7% after 15 cyclic separation tests, showing its excellent recyclable stability for water-in-oil emulsions. Therefore, the rationally designed TiO₂/PDA-based superhydrophobic paper shows great potential in the practical applications of self-cleaning, antifouling, and oil/water separation.

Facile Preparation of Robust Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic TiO2-Decorated Polyvinyl Alcohol Sponge for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Oily wastewater and oil spills pose a threat to the environment and human health, and porous sponge materials are highly desired for oil/water separation. Herein, we design a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO₂-decorated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge material for efficient oil/water separation. The TiO₂-PVA sponge is obtained by firmly anchoring TiO₂ nanoparticles onto the skeleton surface of pristine PVA sponge via the cross-linking reactions between TiO₂ nanoparticles and H₃BO₃ and KH550, followed by the chemical modification of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane. The as-prepared TiO₂-PVA sponge shows a high water contact angle of 157° (a sliding angle of 5.5°) and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, showing excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. The TiO₂-PVA sponge exhibits excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of immersing it in the corrosive solutions and solvents, boiling it in water, and the sandpaper abrasion test. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO₂-PVA sponge possesses excellent absorption capacity of oils or organic solvents ranging from 4.3 to 13.6 times its own weight. More importantly, the as-prepared TiO₂-PVA sponge can separate carbon tetrachloride from the oil-water mixture with a separation efficiency of 97.8% with the aid of gravity and maintains a separation efficiency of 96.5% even after 15 cyclic oil/water separation processes. Therefore, the rationally designed superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO₂-PVA sponge shows great potential in practical applications of dealing with oily wastewater and oil spills.
