Application of manganese oxide nanoparticles synthesized via green route for improved performance of water-based drilling fluids

Optimization of Water Based Drilling Fluid Properties with the SiO2/g-C3N4 Hybrid

Drilling fluids are an essential component of drilling operations in the oil and gas industry. Nanotechnology is being used to develop advanced drilling fluid additives. This study looked at the viability of synthesizing SiO2/g-C3N4 hybrid extending the Stober process followed by its addition in different concentrations to water-based drilling fluids and studying impact on the rheological and fluid loss properties of the fluids. The synthesized hybrid was analyzed using XRD, SEM, TGA, and FTIR. Subsequently, it was used to develop the water-based drilling mud formulations and subjected to measurements in accordance with API standard practices. The studies were carried out at various SiO2/g-C3N4 nanoparticle concentrations under before hot rolling (BHR) and after hot rolling (AHR) conditions. The outcomes demonstrated that the rheological and fluid loss properties were enhanced by the addition of SiO2/g-C3N4 nanoparticles, as it worked in synergy with other additives. Additionally, it was discovered that the nanoparticles improved the drilling fluid thermal stability. The experimental findings indicate a significant influence of SiO2/g-C3N4 nanoparticles on base fluid properties including rheology and fluid loss as the most remarkable, especially at higher temperatures. The significant improvements in yield point and 10 s gel strength were 55 and 42.8% under BHR and 216 and 140% under AHR conditions, respectively. Permeability plugging test (PPT) fluid loss was reduced by 69.6 and 87.2% under BHR and AHR conditions, respectively, when 0.5 lb/bbl nanoparticles were used in formulations. As a result, SiO2/g-C3N4 nanomaterial has the potential to be used as drilling fluid additive in water-based drilling fluids.

Experimental Investigation of Using Manganese Monoxide as a Hydrogen Sulfide Scavenger for Aqueous Drilling Fluids

One of the most serious safety and health concerns during drilling oil and gas wells is the potential release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to the surface, exposing workers to high risks. Serious corrosion-related damage to handling equipment is also inevitable in the presence of H2S. Various H2S scavengers have been utilized, but each has its pros and cons; hence, research is continuing to develop an optimum and feasible scavenger. Since manganese monoxide (MnO) is a reactive metal oxide with high oxidation and absorption capabilities, it may have the potential to effectively scavenge H2S during drilling operations when included in drilling mud formulations. Consequently, the key aim of this work is to investigate the H2S scavenging performance of the aqueous drilling fluid containing MnO. This work studied the impact of MnO addition on the drilling mud's alkalinity, rheological behavior, filtration performance, and corrosion tendency. The experiments were also conducted for mud without a scavenger and a fluid containing the SourScav commercial scavenger, which serves as a benchmarking reference. The findings demonstrated that MnO performed exceptionally well for H2S scavenging where it boosted the aqueous mud's scavenging capacity from 84.3 to 426.2 mg of H2S/L of mud, showing more than 400% improvement relative to the base mud. Additionally, this scavenging performance is about 2.1 times higher than that of the commercial scavenger. As opposed to SourScav, MnO maintained the mud's pH at a safe level above 10. The addition of either MnO or SourScav did not weaken the mud rheology and provided practically satisfactory rheological parameters. Both SourScav and MnO marginally increased the formed filter-cake thickness from 2.9 to 3.9 mm with a slight increment in the filtrated volume but still within the acceptable limits. The corrosion test indicated the noncorrosive characteristics (i.e., the corrosion rate was nearly zero) of MnO and the commercial scavenger. This study illustrates the promising utilization of MnO as a cost-effective H2S scavenger, enhancing the efficiency and safety of drilling operations.

A critical review on the biosynthesis, properties, applications and future outlook of green MnO2 nanoparticles

MnO2 nanoparticles have played a vital role in biomedical, catalysis, electrochemical and energy storage fields, but requiring toxic chemicals in the fabrication intercepts their applications. There is an increasing demand for biosynthesis of MnO2 nanoparticles using green sources such as plant species in accordance with the purposes of environmental mitigation and production cost reduction. Here, we review recent advancements on the use of natural compounds such as polyphenols, reducing sugars, quercetins, etc. Extracted directly from low-cost and available plants for biogenic synthesis of MnO2 nanoparticles. Role of these phytochemicals and formation mechanism of bio-medicated MnO2 nanoparticles are shed light on. MnO2 nanoparticles own small particle size, high crystallinity, diverse morphology, high surface area and stability. Thanks to higher biocompatibility, bio-mediated synthesized MnO2 nanoparticles exhibited better antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activity than chemically synthesized ones. In terms of wastewater treatment and energy storage, they also served as efficient adsorbents and catalyst. Moreover, several aspects of limitation and future outlook of bio-mediated MnO2 nanoparticles in the fields are analyzed. It is expected that the present work not only expands systematic understandings of synthesis methods, properties and applications MnO2 nanoparticles but also pave the way for the nanotechnology revolution in combination with green chemistry and sustainable development.

Effect of MnxOy Nanoparticles Stabilized with Methionine on Germination of Barley Seeds (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The aim of this research was to study the effect of Mn_xO_y nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine on the morphofunctional characteristics of the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crop. Mn_xO_y nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine were synthesized using potassium permanganate and L-methionine. We established that Mn_xO_y nanoparticles have a diameter of 15 to 30 nm. According to quantum chemical modeling and IR spectroscopy, it is shown that the interaction of Mn_xO_y nanoparticles with L-methionine occurs through the amino group. It is found that Mn_xO_y nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine have positive effects on the roots and seedling length, as well as the seed germination energy. The effect of Mn_xO_y nanoparticles on Hordeum vulgare L. seeds is nonlinear. At a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL, there was a statistically significant increase in the length of seedlings by 68% compared to the control group. We found that the root lengths of samples treated with Mn_xO_y nanoparticle sols with a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL were 62.8%, 32.7%, and 158.9% higher compared to samples treated with L-methionine, KMnO₄, and the control sample, respectively. We have shown that at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL, the germination energy of seeds increases by 50.0% compared to the control sample, by 10.0% compared to the samples treated with L-methionine, and by 13.8% compared to the samples treated with KMnO₄.

A comprehensive review of nanoparticles: Effect on water-based drilling fluids and wellbore stability

Wellbore stability in shale is a recurring crisis during oil and gas well drilling. The adsorption of water and ions from drilling fluid by shale, which causes clay swelling, is the primary cause of wellbore instability. Nanomaterials have been a subject of interest in recent years to be an effective shale inhibitor in drilling fluid, intending to minimize clay swelling. This article presents a comprehensive review of the current progress of nanoparticle role in water-based drilling fluid with regards to wellbore stability, reviewing the experimental methods, the effect of nanoparticles in drilling fluid, the mechanism of shale stability and the outlook for future research. This paper employed a systematic review methodology to highlight the progress of nanoparticle water-based drilling fluids in recent years. Previous studies indicated the current trend for drilling fluid additives was nanoparticles modified with surfactants and polymers, which minimize colloidal stability issues and enhance shale stability. A review of experimental methods showed that the pressure transmission test benefits shale stability assessment under reservoir conditions. Parametric analysis of nanoparticles showed that parameters such as concentration and size directly affected the shale stability even in high salinity solution. However, there is a lack of studies on nanoparticle types, with silica nanoparticles being the most popular among researchers. Nanoparticles enhance shale stability via physical plugging, chemical inhibition, and electrostatic interactions between surface charges. To better comprehend the influence of nanoparticles on shale stabilization, it is necessary to evaluate a wider range of nanoparticle types using the proper experimental techniques.
