Aqueous extract-mediated green synthesis of CuO nanoparticles: Potential anti-tuberculosis agents

The emergence of drug-resistant strains in tuberculosis treatment underscores the urgency for novel therapeutic approaches. This study investigates the anti-tuberculosis activity of green-synthesized copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) using garlic and astragalus extracts. The physicochemical characterization of the nanoparticles confirms successful synthesis, followed by assessment of their antibacterial properties and safety profile. Rats infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis are treated with nanocomposites derived from garlic extract at doses of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg body weight. Evaluation includes the analysis of Early secreted antigenic target of 6 kDa (ESAT-6) expression and confirmation of antibodies through molecular assays. Administration of garlic and nanocomposites demonstrates significant inhibitory effects on tuberculosis progression in rats, validated by safety assessments and antibacterial efficacy. Notably, the 100 mg/kg dosage exhibits pronounced mitigation of tuberculosis-induced oxidative stress and lung damage. In conclusion, the combined administration of garlic extracts and green-synthesized nanocomposites shows promising efficacy in reducing tuberculosis infection, highlighting a potential avenue for anti-tuberculosis interventions.

Synthesis of Cu and CuO nanoparticles from e-waste and evaluation of their antibacterial and photocatalytic properties

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) contain a plethora of valuable metals, considered an attractive secondary resource. In the current research, a hydrometallurgical process combined ammonia/ammonium chloride leaching and reduction (using L-ascorbic acid) to recover copper and its oxide (CuO) as nanosized particles from WPCBs was investigated. The results of leaching indicated that 96.7% of copper could be recovered at a temperature of 35 °C for a leaching duration of 2 h with ammonium chloride and ammonia concentration of 2 mol/L at a solid:liquid ratio of 1:10 g/cm3. The synthesized particles exhibit spherical and distorted sphere morphology with average particle size of 460 nm and 50 nm for Cu and CuO NPs, respectively. The antibacterial activity of Cu, CuO, and a (1:1) blend of both (Cu/CuO) has been examined against five different bacterial and fungal strains. The highest zone of inhibition was measured as 21.2 mm for Cu NPs toward Escherichia coli and 16.7 mm for Cu/CuO blend toward Bacillus cereus bacteria. The highest zone of inhibition was measured as 13 mm and 13.8 mm for Cu/CuO blend toward Fusarium proliferatum and Penicillium verrucosum fungi. Cu/CuO blend showed notable photocatalytic activity towards Rhodamine B dye under visible light irradiation with 96% degradation rate within 120 min. Using the process developed in this study, copper and its oxide as nanoparticles can be produced from WPCBs and used for multifunctional applications.

Facile Process for the Development of Antiviral Cotton Fabrics with Nano-Embossed Copper Oxide

Metallic or metal oxide-based nanoparticles have the potential to inactivate viruses. Among various metals, copper has shown edge over others. One of the rapidly evolving areas is to combine nanoscience for production of self-sanitizing antiviral surfaces. In this study, we designed antiviral-coated fabrics to combat the spread of viruses. Copper oxide nanoparticles were sonochemically synthesized and subsequently deposited using the dip-coat process to modify the surface of fabric. The morphology and structure of uncoated and coated fabrics were examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and elemental analysis. The findings show that small, agglomerated rugby ball structures made of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (16 ± 1.6 nm, according to the Scherrer equation) develop on the surface of fabric, resulting in nano-embossing and a hydrophobic (contact angle > 140°) surface. The CuO-coated fabric yielded the maximum zone of inhibition for antibacterial activity. The virucidal activity (against human adenovirus-B) of CuO nanoparticle-fabricated fabric against adenovirus shows decreased 99.99% according to the ISO 18184 testing standard. With the dip and dry approach, any textile industry can use the simple coating procedure without having to change its textile operations. This fabric can be widely used in the face mask, clothing, bedding, and aprons, and the coating remains efficient over more than 25 washes.

Toxicological assessment of Phormidium sp. derived copper oxide nanoparticles for its biomedical and environmental applications

Driven by the need to biosynthesized alternate biomedical agents to prevent and treat infection, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) have surfaced as a promising avenue. Cyanobacteria-derived synthesis of CuONPs is of substantive interest as it offers an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and biocompatible route. In the present study biosynthesized CuONPs were characterized and investigated regarding their toxicity. Morphological analysis using TEM, SEM and AFM showed the spherical particle size of 20.7 nm with 96% copper that confirmed the purity of CuONPs. Biogenic CuONPs with IC₅₀ value of 64.6 µg ml^-1 showed 90% scavenging of free radicals in superoxide radical scavenging assay. CuONPs showed enhanced anti-inflammatory activity by 86% of protein denaturation with IC₅₀ value of 89.9 µg ml^-1. Biogenic CuONPs exhibited significant toxicity against bacterial strains with lowest MIC value of 62.5 µg ml^-1 for B. cereus and fungal strain with a MIC value of 125 µg ml^-1 for C. albicans. In addition CuONPs demonstrated a high degree of synergistic interaction when combined with standard drugs. CuONPs exhibited significant cytotoxicity against non-small cell lung cancer with an IC₅₀ value of 100.8 µg ml^-1 for A549 and 88.3 µg ml^-1 for the H1299 cell line with apoptotic activities. Furthermore, biogenic CuONPs was evaluated for their photocatalytic degradation potential against methylene blue dye and were able to removed 94% dye in 90 min. Free radical scavenging analysis suggested that CuONPs assisted dye degradation was mainly induced by hydroxide radicals. Biogenic CuONPs appears as an eco-friendly and cost effective photocatalyst for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with synthetic dyes that poses threat to aquatic biota and human health. The present study highlighted the blend of biomedical and photocatalytic potential of Phormidium derived CuONPs as an attractive approach for future applications in nanomedicine and bioremediation.

Nano-antivirals: A comprehensive review

Nanoparticles can be used as inhibitory agents against various microorganisms, including bacteria, algae, archaea, fungi, and a huge class of viruses. The mechanism of action includes inhibiting the function of the cell membrane/stopping the synthesis of the cell membrane, disturbing the transduction of energy, producing toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), and inhibiting or reducing RNA and DNA production. Various nanomaterials, including different metallic, silicon, and carbon-based nanomaterials and nanoarchitectures, have been successfully used against different viruses. Recent research strongly agrees that these nanoarchitecture-based virucidal materials (nano-antivirals) have shown activity in the solid state. Therefore, they are very useful in the development of several products, such as fabric and high-touch surfaces. This review thoroughly and critically identifies recently developed nano-antivirals and their products, nano-antiviral deposition methods on various substrates, and possible mechanisms of action. By considering the commercial viability of nano-antivirals, recommendations are made to develop scalable and sustainable nano-antiviral products with contact-killing properties.

Antimicrobial Properties of CuO Particles Deposited on a Medical Mask

Medical face masks help to reduce the transmission of pathogens, however, the number of infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens continues to increase. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of an experimental medical mask layer coated with copper oxide using an environmentally friendly non-thermal physical vapour deposition approach. Pure CuO nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the middle layer of a face mask. The particles were distributed in different size clusters (starting from less than 100 nm dots going up to about 1 µm cluster-like structures). The CuO clusters did not form uniform films, which could negatively influence airflow during use of the mask. We investigated the antimicrobial properties of the experimental mask layer coated with CuO NPs using 17 clinical and zoonotic strains of gram-negative, gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria and yeasts, during direct and indirect contact with the mask surface. The effectiveness of the coated mask layer depended on the deposition duration of CuO. The optimal time for deposition was 30 min, which ensured a bactericidal effect for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including antimicrobial-resistant strains, using 150 W power. The CuO NPs had little or no effect on Candida spp. yeasts.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial and Antiproliferative Effects of CuO-TiO2-Chitosan-Escin Nanocomposites on Human Leukemic MOLT4 Cells

Nanocomposites comprised of CuO-TiO2-chitosan-escin, which has adjustable physicochemical properties, provide a solution for therapeutic selectivity in cancer treatment. By controlling the intrinsic signaling primarily through the mitochondrial signaling pathway, we desired nanocomposites with enhanced anticancer activity by containing CuO-TiO2-chitosan-escin. The metal oxides CuO and TiO2, the natural polymer chitosan, and a phytochemical compound escin were combined to form CuO-TiO2-chitosan-escin nanocomposites. The synthesized nanocomposites were confirmed and characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, TEM, and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. A human leukemia cell line (MOLT-4) was used to assess the efficacy and selectivity of nanocomposites. Based on a cytotoxicity study, CuO-TiO2-chitosan-escin nanocomposites had inhibition concentrations (IC50) of 13.68, 8.9, and 7.14 µg/mL against human T lymphoblast cells after 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation, respectively. Compared with untreated MOLT-4 cells, CuO-TiO2-chitosan-escin nanocomposite-treated cells significantly increased (p < 0.05) caspase-3, -8, and -9 and decreased the levels of antioxidant enzymes GR, SOD, and GSH. Furthermore, MDA for lipid peroxidase and ROS levels significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the treated cells than in the untreated cells. Remarkably, CuO-TiO2-chitosan-escin nanocomposite-mediated control of cell cycles were mainly achieved through the activation of caspase-3, -8, and -9.

Recent Advances in Functionalization of Cotton Fabrics with Nanotechnology

Nowadays, consumers understand that upgrading their traditional clothing can improve their lives. In a garment fabric, comfort and functional properties are the most important features that a wearer looks for. A variety of textile technologies are being developed to meet the needs of customers. In recent years, nanotechnology has become one of the most important areas of research. Nanotechnology's unique and useful characteristics have led to its rapid expansion in the textile industry. In the production of high-performance textiles, various finishing, coating, and manufacturing techniques are used to produce fibers or fabrics with nano sized (10-9) particles. Humans have been utilizing cotton for thousands of years, and it accounts for around 34% of all fiber production worldwide. The clothing industry, home textile industry, and healthcare industry all use it extensively. Nanotechnology can enhance cotton fabrics' properties, including antibacterial activity, self-cleaning, UV protection, etc. Research in the field of the functionalization of nanotechnology and their integration into cotton fabrics is presented in the present study.

Synthesis of CuO nanoparticles stabilized with gelatin for potential use in food packaging applications

In the present study, a method for the synthesis of gelatin-stabilized copper oxide nanoparticles was developed. Synthesis was carried out by direct chemical precipitation. Copper sulfate, chloride, and acetate were used as precursors for the copper oxide synthesis. Gelatin was used as a stabilizer. It was found that the formation of monophase copper oxide II only occurred when copper acetate was used as a precursor. Our results showed that particles of the smallest diameter are formed in an aqueous medium (18 ± 6 nm), and those of th largest diameter—in an isobutanol medium (370 ± 131 nm). According to the photon correlation spectroscopy data, copper oxide nanoparticles synthesized in an aqueous medium were highly stable and had a monomodal size distribution with an average hydrodynamic radius of 61 nm. The study of the pH effect on the colloidal stability of copper oxide nanoparticles showed that the sample was stable in the pH range of 6.8 to 11.98. A possible mechanism for the pH influence on the stability of copper oxide nanoparticles is described. The effect of the ionic strength of the solution on the stability of the CuO nanoparticles sol was also studied, and the results showed that Ca²⁺ ions had the greatest effect on the sample stability. IR spectroscopy showed that the interaction of CuO nanoparticles with gelatin occurred through the hydroxyl group. It was found that CuO nanoparticles stabilized with gelatin have a fungicidal activity at concentration equivalent 2.5 · 10⁻³ mol/L and as a material for food nanopackaging can provide an increase in the shelf life of products on the example of strawberries and tomatoes. We investigated the possibility of using methylcellulose films modified with CuO nanoparticles for packaging and storage of hard cheese “Holland”. The distribution of CuO nanoparticles in the methylcellulose film was uniform. We found that methylcellulose films modified with CuO nanoparticles inhibited the growth and development of QMAFAM, coliforms, yeast and mold in experimental cheese sa mples. Our research has shown that during the cheese storage in thermostat at 35 ± 1 °C for 7 days, CuO nanoparticles migrated to the product from the film. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the maximum change in the concentration of copper in the experimental samples was only 0.12 µg/mg, which is not a toxic concentration. In general, the small value of migration of CuO nanoparticles confirms the high stability of the developed preparation. Our results indicated that the CuO nanoparticles stabilized with gelatin have a high potential for use in food packaging – both as an independent nanofilm and as part of other packaging materials.

Recent advances in functionalization of nanotextiles: A strategy to combat harmful microorganisms and emerging pathogens in the 21st century

The textile industry can benefit from nanotechnology as new properties are conferred on functionalized nanotextiles beyond what a fabric can traditionally offer. These properties include extermination of microorganisms by nanotextiles to curtail their growth and dissemination in the environment and in healthcare facilities. The emergence and thriving of multi-drug resistance (MDR) phenomenon among microbes are threats at achieving good health and well-being (goal 3) of sustainable development goals (SDG) of UN. In addition, MDR strains emerge at a higher rate than the frequency of discovery and production of potent antimicrobial drugs. Therefore, there is need for innovative approach to tackle MDR. Among recent innovations is functionalization of textiles with metal nanoparticles to kill microorganisms. This paper explores strategies in nanotextile production to combat emerging diseases in the 21st century. We discussed different nanotextiles with proven antimicrobial activities, and their applications as air filters, sportswear, personal wears, nose masks, health care and medical fabrics. This compendium highlights frontiers of applications of antimicrobial nanotextiles that can extend multidisciplinary research endeavours towards achieving good health and well-being. Until now, there exists no review on exploitation of nanotextiles to combat MDR pathogens as included in this report.

Enhanced Plasmon Based Ag and Au Nanosystems and Their Improved Biomedical Impacts

Numerous specialists and academics have backed the improved physicochemical characteristics of metal substrate (Ag, Au) based composite nanoparticles for a number of applications, including pharmaceuticals, optoelectronics, and environmental impact. Insights of Ag and Au NPs-based nanomaterials will be discussed, as well as important production, physicochemical, and biotechnological characteristics. The plasmon capacities of Ag and Au NPs, along with their customisable form, scale, and surface modification could be described by specified geometries and constituent contents. It was revealed that interaction dynamics of Ag and Au implanted nanomaterials with dopants/defects ratios seem to be more effective in stimulating pathogens by interrupting biochemical reactions. As a result, we focus on defect science in Ag and Au-based nanoscale materials, taking into account surface morphology, ionic packing, and chemical phase assessment. This chapter will cover the important optical, geometrical, and physicochemical features of Ag and Au nanomaterials, and their pharmacological significance.

Polysaccharides and Metal Nanoparticles for Functional Textiles: A Review

Nanotechnology is a powerful tool for engineering functional materials that has the potential to transform textiles into high-performance, value-added products. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the development of functional textiles using metal nanoparticles (MNPs). The incorporation of MNPs in textiles allows for the obtention of multifunctional properties, such as ultraviolet (UV) protection, self-cleaning, and electrical conductivity, as well as antimicrobial, antistatic, antiwrinkle, and flame retardant properties, without compromising the inherent characteristics of the textile. Environmental sustainability is also one of the main motivations in development and innovation in the textile industry. Thus, the synthesis of MNPs using ecofriendly sources, such as polysaccharides, is of high importance. The main functions of polysaccharides in these processes are the reduction and stabilization of MNPs, as well as the adhesion of MNPs onto fabrics. This review covers the major research attempts to obtain textiles with different functional properties using polysaccharides and MNPs. The main polysaccharides reported include chitosan, alginate, starch, cyclodextrins, and cellulose, with silver, zinc, copper, and titanium being the most explored MNPs. The potential applications of these functionalized textiles are also reported, and they include healthcare (wound dressing, drug release), protection (antimicrobial activity, UV protection, flame retardant), and environmental remediation (catalysts).

Investigation of the Characteristics and Antibacterial Activity of Polymer-Modified Copper Oxide Nanoparticles

The proliferation of drug-resistant pathogens continues to increase, giving rise to serious public health concerns. Many researchers have formulated metal oxide nanoparticles for use as novel antibacterial agents. In the present study, copper oxide (CuO) was synthesized by simple hydrothermal synthesis, and doping was performed to introduce different polymers onto the NP surface for bacteriostasis optimization. The polymer-modified CuO NPs were analyzed further with XRD, FTIR, TEM, DLS and zeta potential to study their morphology, size, and the charge of the substrate. The results indicate that polymer-modified CuO NPs had a significantly higher bacteriostatic rate than unmodified CuO NPs. In particular, polydopamine (PDA)-modified CuO (CuO-PDA) NPs, which carry a weakly negative surface charge, exhibited excellent antibacterial effects, with a bacteriostatic rate of up to 85.8 ± 0.2% within 3 h. When compared to other polymer-modified CuO NPs, CuO-PDA NPs exhibited superior bacteriostatic activity due to their smaller size, surface charge, and favorable van der Waals interactions. This may be attributed to the fact that the CuO-PDA NPs had relatively lipophilic structures at pH 7.4, which increased their affinity for the lipopolysaccharide-containing outer membrane of the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli.
