Rhizospheric soil chromium toxicity and its remediation using plant hyperaccumulators

The hyper-accumulation of chromium in its hexavalent form is treated as a hazardous soil pollutant at industrial and mining sites. Excessive accumulation of Cr6+ in soil threatens the environmental health and safety of living organisms. Out of two stable forms of chromium, Cr6+ is highly responsible for ecotoxicity. The expression of the high toxicity of Cr6+ at low concentrations in the soil environment indicates its lethality. It is usually released into the soil during various socio-economic activities. Sustainable remediation of Cr6+ contaminated soil is of utmost need and can be carried out by employing suitable plant hyperaccumulators. Alongside the plant's ability to sequester toxic metals like Cr6+, the rhizospheric soil parameters play a significant role in this technique and are mostly overlooked. Here we review the application of a cost-effective and eco-friendly remediation technology at hyperaccumulators rhizosphere to minimize the Cr6+ led soil toxicity. The use of selected plant species along with effective rhizospheric activities has been suggested as a technique to reduce Cr6+ toxicity on soil and its associated biota. This soil rectification approach may prove to be sustainable and advantageous over other possible techniques. Further, it may open up new solutions for soil Cr6+ management at polluted sites.

Pseudomonas fluorescens imparts cadmium stress tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana via induction of AtPCR2 gene expression

BACKGROUND

Cadmium is a non-essential, third largest heavy metal contaminant with long retention time that poses environmental hazards. It emanating majorly from industrial processes and phosphate fertilizers. Cadmium is effortlessly assimilated by plants and leads to yield loss. Henceforth, identification of mechanisms to attenuate the heavy metal toxicity in crops is beneficial for enhanced yields.

RESULTS

Beneficial soil bacteria have been known to combat both biotic and abiotic stress, thereby promoting plant growth. Amongst them, Pseudomonas fluorescens has been shown to enhance abiotic stress resistance in umpteen crops for instance maize and groundnut. Here, we investigated the role of P. fluorescens in conferring cadmium stress resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana. In silico analysis of PCR2 gene and promoter revealed the role, in cadmium stress resistance of A. thaliana. Real-time expression analysis employing qRT-PCR ratified the upregulation of AtPCR2 transcript under cadmium stress up to 6 folds. Total leaf (50%), biomass (23%), chlorophyll content (chlorophyll-a and b 40%, and 36 %) silique number (50%), and other growth parameters significantly improved on bacterial treatment of the 2mM Cd-stressed plants.

CONCLUSION

Moreover, generated 35s-promoter driven AtPCR2 over-expressing transgenic lines that exhibited resistance to cadmium and other heavy metal stress. Taken together, a crucial interplay of P. fluorscens mediated enhanced expression of AtPCR2 significantly induced cadmium stress resistance in Arabidopsis plants.

Research Progress of Soil Microorganisms in Response to Heavy Metals in Rice

Soil heavy-metal pollution leads to excessive heavy metals in rice and other food crops, which has caused serious impacts on the ecological environment and on human health. In recent years, environmental friendly treatment methods that reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil by soil microorganisms improving the tolerance of heavy metals in rice and reducing the transfer of heavy metals from the roots to the above-ground parts of rice have attracted much attention. This paper reviews the role and mechanism of soil microorganisms in alleviating heavy-metal stress in rice at home and abroad in recent years. At present, microorganisms tolerant to heavy metals mainly include bacteria and fungi, and their mechanisms include the adsorption of heavy metals by microorganisms, the secretion of growth-promoting substances (growth hormone, ACC deaminase, IAA), changing the physical and chemical properties of the soil and the composition of the microbial community, changing the transport mode of heavy metals in soil, the improvement of the antioxidant capacity of rice, etc. Hence, soil microorganisms have good application value and prospects in rice and other crops. However, the vast majority of current research focuses on a single strain, the screening principles of strains are limited, the pathogenicities of the strains have not been evaluated, and there are still few field experiments under natural conditions. In the future, we should strengthen the action of soil microorganisms on rice in response to the above problems in heavy metals, to better promote the microbial remediation technology.
