Abstract
Microbial processes can influence the complex geochemical behaviour of the toxic metalloid antimony (Sb) in mining environments. The present study is aimed to evaluate the influence of microbial communities on the mobility of Sb from solid phases to water in different compartments and redox conditions of a mining site in southwest (SW) Spain. Samples of surface materials presenting high Sb concentrations, from two weathered mining waste dumps, and an aquatic sediment were incubated in slurries comparing oxic and anoxic conditions. The initial microbial communities of the three materials strongly differed. Incubations induced an increase of microbial biomass and an evolution of the microbial communities' structures and compositions, which diverged in different redox conditions. The presence of active bacteria always influenced the mobility of Sb, except in the neutral pH waste incubated in oxic conditions. The effect of active microbial activities in oxic conditions was dependent on the material: Sb oxic release was biologically amplified with the acidic waste, but attenuated with the sediment. Different bacterial genera involved in Sb, Fe and S oxidation or reduction were present and/or grew during incubation of each material. The results highlighted the wide diversity of microbial communities and metabolisms at the small geographic scale of a mining site and their strong implication in Sb mobility.

Abstract
The increasing public expectations for good air quality have necessitated the development of biodeodorization technology. Among different malodorous pollutants, H2S has attracted extensive attention and diverse biodesulfurization technology has been developed for efficient H2S removal. In this study, a novel heterotrophic Pseudomonas strain, PSP1, was isolated from biogas slurry and its biodesulfurization ability was investigated. Culture conditions of 30 °C and 200 rpm were determined as the optimal for both cell growth and thiosulfate conversion. Under such conditions, the highest OD600 value was observed as 6.74 and 50 mM thiosulfate within 10 h. PSP1 was found to convert thiosulfate to sulfane which could be decomposed into elemental sulfur and therefore achieved desulfurization. However, this process was relatively weak as more than 60% thiosulfate was converted into soluble tetrathionate. The whole genome sequencing and functional annotation identified the genes in PSP1 associated with sulfur metabolism and the RT-qPCR analysis quantified the expression level of corresponding genes. The expression level of tsdA, which was responsible for tetrathionate production, was around 60 folds higher than genes for sulfane production (e.g. TST1, cysI). Further research would focus on the enhancement of sulfane production pathway through metabolic engineering tools.

Abstract
The biodesulfurization of sulfide wastewater for elemental sulfur recovery by isolated Halothiobacillus neapolitanus in an internal airlift loop reactor (IALR) was investigated. The flocculant producer Pseudomonas sp. strain N1-2 was used to deposit the produced elemental sulfur during biodesulfurization. The functional group analysis indicated that biofloculation was closely associated with NH and CO. The biodesulfurization system performed well under moderate water quality fluctuations (1.29-3.88 kg·m-3·d-1 COD; 1.54-3.08 kg·m-3·d-1·S2-) as it maintained stable S2- removal and sulfur flocculation rates. Meanwhile, the qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the transcriptional level of cbbL decreased in the presence of organic carbon, while the expressions of sqr, sat, and cytochrome C3 increased under higher sulfide stress. Moreover, the relative proportions of Halothiobacillus was strengthened via microbial intervention of the LJN1-3 strain. The S2- removal efficiency and elemental sulfur production was further improved by 32.5% and 28.2%, respectively, in an IALR.

Abstract
During anaerobic respiration, the bacteria Geobacter sulfurreducens can transfer electrons to extracellular electron accepters through its pilus. G. sulfurreducens pili have been reported to have metallic-like conductivity that is similar to doped organic semiconductors. To study the characteristics and origin of conductive pilin proteins found in the pilus structure, their genetic, structural, and phylogenetic properties were analyzed. The genetic relationships, and conserved structures and sequences that were obtained were used to predict the evolution of the pilins. Homologous genes that encode conductive pilin were found using PilFind and Cluster. Sequence characteristics and protein tertiary structures were analyzed with MAFFT and QUARK, respectively. The origin of conductive pilins was explored by building a phylogenetic tree. Truncation is a characteristic of conductive pilin. The structures of truncated pilins and their accompanying proteins were found to be similar to the N-terminal and C-terminal ends of full-length pilins respectively. The emergence of the truncated pilins can probably be ascribed to the evolutionary pressure of their extracellular electron transporting function. Genes encoding truncated pilins and proteins similar to the C-terminal of full-length pilins, which contain a group of consecutive anti-parallel beta-sheets, are adjacent in bacterial genomes. According to the genetic, structure, and phylogenetic analyses performed in this study, we inferred that the truncated pilins and their accompanying proteins probably evolved from full-length pilins by gene fission through duplication, degeneration, and separation. These findings provide new insights about the molecular mechanisms involved in long-range electron transport along the conductive pili of Geobacter species.
