Modification of Thin Film Composite Membrane by Chitosan-Silver Particles to Improve Desalination and Anti-Biofouling Performance. MEMBRANES 2022; 12:membranes12090851. [PMID: 36135870 PMCID: PMC9505310 DOI: 10.3390/membranes12090851] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/13/2022] [Revised: 08/24/2022] [Accepted: 08/27/2022] [Indexed: 05/26/2023]
Abstract
Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination is a technology that is commonly used to mitigate water scarcity problems; one of its disadvantages is the bio-fouling of the membranes used, which reduces its performance. In order to minimize this problem, this study prepared modified thin film composite (TFC) membranes by the incorporation of chitosan-silver particles (CS-Ag) of different molecular weights, and evaluated them in terms of their anti-biofouling and desalination performances. The CS-Ag were obtained using ionotropic gelation, and were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The modified membranes were synthetized by the incorporation of the CS-Ag using the interfacial polymerization method. The membranes (MCS-Ag) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle. Bactericidal tests by total cell count were performed using Bacillus halotolerans MCC1, and anti-adhesion properties were confirmed through biofilm cake layer thickness and total organic carbon (%). The desalination performance was defined by permeate flux, hydraulic resistance, salt rejection and salt permeance by using 2000 and 5000 mg L-1 of NaCl. The MCS-Ag-L presented superior permeate flux and salt rejection (63.3% and 1% higher, respectively), as well as higher bactericidal properties (76% less in total cell count) and anti-adhesion capacity (biofilm thickness layer 60% and total organic carbon 75% less, compared with the unmodified membrane). The highest hydraulic resistance value was for MCS-Ag-M. In conclusion, the molecular weight of CS-Ag significantly influences the desalination and the antimicrobial performances of the membranes; as the molecular weight decreases, the membranes' performances increase. This study shows a possible alternative for increasing membrane useful life in the desalination process.

Abstract
The main objective of the present study is to develop artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the adsorption efficiency of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on Cr(VI) removal. Polydisperse MWCNTs were synthesized at 750 °C on alumina supported Fe-Co-Mo catalyst using CVD (chemical vapor deposition)-assisted spray pyrolysis of Azadirachta indica (Neem) oil under inert Argon (Ar) atmosphere. Growth of MCWNTs with inner diameters between 9 and 14 nm was corroborated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and Raman spectral evidence assessments. The metal-ion adsorbent capacity (Cr-VI) of the as such prepared MWCNTs was examined for industrial purposes. Different parameters such as adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters were analyzed for the removal of metal ions with MWCNTs. The results of isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic study indicated that the process suited well with Langmuir isotherm, pseudo second-order kinetics, and followed endothermic reaction, respectively. The effects of parameters such as adsorbent dosage, concentration of chromium ion (Cr-VI), pH, and contact time were studied to optimize the maximum removal of Cr(VI). In order to optimize the process conditions using Artificial Neural Networks, Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to design the batch adsorption experiments, and the resulting datasets were used as the input for ANN. To predict the adsorption efficiency, various ANN architectures were examined using different training algorithms, number of neurons in the hidden layer, and the transfer function for the hidden and output layers. A neural network structure with Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) training algorithm, 14 hidden neurons, and tangent sigmoid transfer function at the hidden layer and logarithmic sigmoid transfer function at the output layer furnished the best level of prediction results. Comparing with experimental data, the optimal model capitulated mean square error (MSE),and correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.0324 and 0.99512, respectively. The results showed that ANN is well-organized in predicting the adsorption efficiency of MWCNTs for Cr(VI) metal ion removal process.

Abstract
We report a modified starch-poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film (MSPF) prepared by extrusion blowing. Polyurethane prepolymer (PUP), was modified to the starch to enhance the compatibility. Different contents of amylose was blended with PBAT for improving mechanical strength and oxygen-barrier properties of MSPF. The microstructures, crystallinity, mechanical properties, oxygen-barrier capacity of MSPF were thoroughly evaluated. The result showed that MSPF with high starch content and excellent performances was successfully prepared with the synergy of PUP modification, amylose introduction and extrusion blowing. The crystallinity, hydrophobicity, oxygen-barrier properties and mechanical properties of MSPF increased with the increasing amylose content. The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break of MSPF reached 10.6 MPa and 805.6 %, respectively, even at the high starch content of 50 %. The result demonstrated that MSPF having excellent mechanical properties and oxygen-barrier properties could be use in the biodegradable field such as packaging materials, agricultural films and garbage bags.

Abstract
Copolymers of chitosan and hydroxyetheyl methacrylate (HEMA) were successfully synthesized using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator, via in situ polymerization method, followed by efficacious preparation of their nanocomposites by incorporating calcium sulphate nanorods via solution blending process. Hydrophilicity studies confirmed that grafting of HEMA in the backbone of the hydrophobic chitosan chains induced the improvement in hydrophilicity of chitosan, while mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were also enhanced significantly up to 20%, due to availability of enlarged surface area and higher aspect ratio of CaSO4 nanorods. This was supported by FE-SEM and XRD analysis in terms of proper distribution of nanofiller through the copolymer matrix and corresponding rise in percentage crystallanity respectively. Results obtained from biodegradation studies proved the efficiency of CaSO4 nanofillers to improve biomechanical strength of chitosan nanocomposites, without affecting their normal degradation profile that renders the products to be applicable for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Nowadays one of the growing trends is to replace oil-based products with cellulose-based materials. Currently most cellulose esters require a huge excess of chemicals and have therefore, not been broadly used in the industry. Here, we show that decreasing the molar mass of cellulose by ozone hydrolysis provides cellulose functionalization with less chemical consumption. To reveal the differences in reactivity and chemical consumption, we showed esterification of both native cellulose and ozone treated hydrolyzed cellulose. Based on the results, the molar mass of the starting cellulose has a significant effect on the end product's degree of substitution and properties. Furthermore, molar mass controlled palmitate esters form mechanically strong, flexible and optically transparent films with excellent water barrier properties. We anticipate that molar mass controlled cellulose will provide a starting point for the greater use of cellulose based materials, in various application, such as films and composites.

Abstract
Biomimetic nanofibrous scaffolds derived from natural biopolymers for bone tissue engineering applications require good mechanical and biological performances including biomineralization. The present work proposes the utility of chitin whisker (CTWK) to enhance mechanical properties of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (CS/PVA) nanofibers and to offer osteoblast cell growth with hydroxyapatite (HA) mineralization. By using diacid as a solvent, electrospun CS/PVA nanofibrous membranes containing CTWK can be easily obtained. The dimension stability of nanofibrous CS/PVA/CTWK bionanocomposite is further controlled by exposing to glutaraldehyde vapor. The nanofibrous membranes obtained allow mineralization of HA in concentrated simulated body fluid resulting in an improvement of Young's modulus and tensile strength. The CTWK combined with HA in bionanocomposite is a key to promote osteoblast cell adhesion and proliferation. The present work, for the first time, demonstrates the use of CTWKs for bionanocomposite fibers of chitosan and its hydroxyapatite biomineralization with the function in osteoblast cell culture. These hydroxyapatite-hybridized CS/PVA/CTWK bionanocomposite fibers (CS/PVA/CTWK-HA) offer a great potential for bone tissue engineering applications.
