Doping Engineering of Conductive Polymers and Their Application in Physical Sensors for Healthcare Monitoring

Physical sensors have emerged as a promising technology for real-time healthcare monitoring, which tracks various physical signals from the human body. Accurate acquisition of these physical signals from biological tissue requires excellent electrical conductivity and long-term durability of the sensors under complex mechanical deformation. Conductive polymers, combining the advantages of conventional polymers and organic conductors, are considered ideal conductive materials for healthcare physical sensors due to their intrinsic conductive network, tunable mechanical properties, and easy processing. Doping engineering has been proposed as an effective approach to enhance the sensitivity, lower the detection limit, and widen the operational range of sensors based on conductive polymers. This approach enables the introduction of dopants into conductive polymers to adjust and control the microstructure and energy levels of conductive polymers, thereby optimizing their mechanical and conductivity properties. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of doping engineering methods to improve the physical properties of conductive polymers and highlights their applications in the field of healthcare physical sensors, including temperature sensors, strain sensors, stress sensors, and electrophysiological sensing. Additionally, the challenges and opportunities associated with conductive polymer-based physical sensors in healthcare monitoring are discussed.

Recent Advances in Patterning Strategies for Full-Color Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Metal halide perovskites have emerged as promising light-emitting materials for next-generation displays owing to their remarkable material characteristics including broad color tunability, pure color emission with remarkably narrow bandwidths, high quantum yield, and solution processability. Despite recent advances have pushed the luminance efficiency of monochromic perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) to their theoretical limits, their current fabrication using the spin-coating process poses limitations for fabrication of full-color displays. To integrate PeLEDs into full-color display panels, it is crucial to pattern red-green-blue (RGB) perovskite pixels, while mitigating issues such as cross-contamination and reductions in luminous efficiency. Herein, we present state-of-the-art patterning technologies for the development of full-color PeLEDs. First, we highlight recent advances in the development of efficient PeLEDs. Second, we discuss various patterning techniques of MPHs (i.e., photolithography, inkjet printing, electron beam lithography and laser-assisted lithography, electrohydrodynamic jet printing, thermal evaporation, and transfer printing) for fabrication of RGB pixelated displays. These patterning techniques can be classified into two distinct approaches: in situ crystallization patterning using perovskite precursors and patterning of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals. This review highlights advancements and limitations in patterning techniques for PeLEDs, paving the way for integrating PeLEDs into full-color panels.

Properties and Applications of Self-Healing Polymeric Materials: A Review

Self-healing polymeric materials, engineered to autonomously self-restore damages from external stimuli, are at the forefront of sustainable materials research. Their ability to maintain product quality and functionality and prolong product life plays a crucial role in mitigating the environmental burden of plastic waste. Historically, initial research on the development of self-healing materials has focused on extrinsic self-healing systems characterized by the integration of embedded healing agents. These studies have primarily focused on optimizing the release of healing agents and ensuring rapid self-healing capabilities. In contrast, recent advancements have shifted the focus towards intrinsic self-healing systems that utilize their inherent reactivity and interactions within the matrix. These systems offer the advantage of repeated self-healing over the same damaged zone, which is attributed to reversible chemical reactions and supramolecular interactions. This review offers a comprehensive perspective on extrinsic and intrinsic self-healing approaches and elucidates their unique properties and characteristics. Furthermore, various self-healing mechanisms are surveyed, and insights from cutting-edge studies are integrated.

Progress and prospects in flexible tactile sensors

Flexible tactile sensors have the advantages of large deformation detection, high fault tolerance, and excellent conformability, which enable conformal integration onto the complex surface of human skin for long-term bio-signal monitoring. The breakthrough of flexible tactile sensors rather than conventional tactile sensors greatly expanded application scenarios. Flexible tactile sensors are applied in fields including not only intelligent wearable devices for gaming but also electronic skins, disease diagnosis devices, health monitoring devices, intelligent neck pillows, and intelligent massage devices in the medical field; intelligent bracelets and metaverse gloves in the consumer field; as well as even brain-computer interfaces. Therefore, it is necessary to provide an overview of the current technological level and future development of flexible tactile sensors to ease and expedite their deployment and to make the critical transition from the laboratory to the market. This paper discusses the materials and preparation technologies of flexible tactile sensors, summarizing various applications in human signal monitoring, robotic tactile sensing, and human-machine interaction. Finally, the current challenges on flexible tactile sensors are also briefly discussed, providing some prospects for future directions.

Biocompatible and Oxidation-Resistant Ti3 C2 Tx MXene with Halogen-Free Surface Terminations

Surface chemistry influences not only physicochemical properties but also safety and applications of MXene nanomaterials. Fluorinated Ti3 C2 Tx MXene, synthesized using conventional HF-based etchants, raises concerns regarding harmful effects on electronics and toxicity to living organisms. In this study, well-delaminated halogen-free Ti3 C2 Tx flakes are synthesized using NaOH-based etching solution. The transversal surface plasmon mode of halogen-free Ti3 C2 Tx MXene (833 nm) confirmed red-shift compared to conventional Ti3 C2 Tx (752 nm), and the halogen-free Ti3 C2 Tx MXene has a different density of state by the high proportion of -O and -OH terminations. The synthesized halogen-free Ti3 C2 Tx exhibits a lower water contact angle (34.5°) and work function (3.6 eV) than those of fluorinated Ti3 C2 Tx (49.8° and 4.14 eV, respectively). The synthesized halogen-free Ti3 C2 Tx exhibits high biocompatibility with the living cells, as evidenced by no noticeable cytotoxicity, even at very high concentrations (2000 µg mL⁻1 ), at which fluorinated Ti3 C2 Tx caused ≈50% reduction in cell viability upon its oxidation. Additionally, the oxidation stability of halogen-free Ti3 C2 Tx is enhanced unexpectedly, which cumulatively provides a good rationale for pursuing the halogen-free routes for synthesizing MXene materials for their uses in biomedical and therapeutic applications.

Emerging Functional Polymer Composites for Tactile Sensing

In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the development of high-performance flexible tactile sensors, pursuing the next generation of highly intelligent electronics with diverse potential applications in self-powered wearable sensors, human-machine interactions, electronic skin, and soft robotics. Among the most promising materials that have emerged in this context are functional polymer composites (FPCs), which exhibit exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, enabling them to be excellent candidates for tactile sensors. Herein, this review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in FPCs-based tactile sensors, including the fundamental principle, the necessary property parameter, the unique device structure, and the fabrication process of different types of tactile sensors. Examples of FPCs are elaborated with a focus on miniaturization, self-healing, self-cleaning, integration, biodegradation, and neural control. Furthermore, the applications of FPC-based tactile sensors in tactile perception, human-machine interaction, and healthcare are further described. Finally, the existing limitations and technical challenges for FPCs-based tactile sensors are briefly discussed, offering potential avenues for the development of electronic products.

High-Quality Microprintable and Stretchable Conductors for High-Performance 5G Wireless Communication

With the advent of 5G wireless and Internet of Things technologies, flexible and stretchable printed circuit boards (PCBs) should be designed to address all the specifications necessary to receive signal transmissions, maintaining the signal integrity, and providing electrical connections. Here, we propose a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)/silver nanowire (AgNW) hybrid conductor and high-quality microprinting technology for fabricating flexible and stretchable PCBs in high-performance 5G wireless communication. A simple and low-cost reverse offset printing technique using a commercial adhesive hand-roller was adapted to ensure high-resolution and excellent pattern quality. The AgNP/AgNW micropatterns were fabricated in various line widths, from 5 μm to 5 mm. They exhibited excellent pattern qualities, such as fine line spacing, clear edge definition and outstanding pattern uniformity. After annealing via intense pulsed light irradiation, they showed outstanding electrical resistivity (15.7 μΩ cm). Moreover, they could withstand stretching up to a strain of 90% with a small change in resistance. As a demonstration of their practical application, the AgNP/AgNW micropatterns were used to fabricate 5G communication antennas that exhibited excellent wireless signal processing at operating frequencies in the C-band (4-8 GHz). Finally, a wearable sensor fabricated with these AgNP/AgNW micropatterns could successfully detected fine finger movements in real time with excellent sensitivity.

Shape Memory Alloy-Based Wearables: A Review, and Conceptual Frameworks on HCI and HRI in Industry 4.0

Ever since its discovery, the applications of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) can be found across a range of application domains, from structural design to medical technology. This is based upon the unique and inherent characteristics such as thermal Shape Memory Effect (SME) and Superelasticity (or Pseudoelasticity). While thermal SME is used for shape morphing applications wherein temperature change can govern the shape and dimension of the SMA, Superelasticity allows the alloy to withstand a comparatively very high magnitude of loads without undergoing plastic deformation at higher temperatures. These unique properties in wearables have revolutionized the field, and from fabrics to exoskeletons, SMA has found its place in robotics and cobotics. This review article focuses on the most recent research work in the field of SMA-based smart wearables paired with robotic applications for human-robot interaction. The literature is categorized based on SMA property incorporated and on actuator or sensor-based concept. Further, use-cases or conceptual frameworks for SMA fiber in fabric for 'Smart Jacket' and SMA springs in the shoe soles for 'Smart Shoes' are proposed. The conceptual frameworks are built upon existing technologies; however, their utility in a smart factory concept is emphasized, and algorithms to achieve the same are proposed. The integration of the two concepts with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is discussed, specifically regarding minimizing hazards for the worker/user in Industry 5.0. The article aims to propel a discussion regarding the multi-faceted applications of SMAs in human-robot interaction and Industry 5.0. Furthermore, the challenges and the limitations of the smart alloy and the technological barriers restricting the growth of SMA applications in the field of smart wearables are observed and elaborated.
