Comparative Analysis of Viscoelastic Properties of Open Graded Friction Course under Dynamic and Static Loads

The viscoelastic properties of open graded friction course (OGFC) are closely related to anti-permanent deformation ability, noise reduction ability and durability. To study the viscoelastic parameters of OGFC under dynamic and static loads and to establish the functional relationship between them, uniaxial compression creep tests and dynamic modulus tests were performed to obtain the creep compliance and the dynamic modulus of OGFC. In addition, the Burgers model, modified Burgers model, second-order extensive Maxwell model, Scott-Blair model and modified Sigmoid model were employed to quantitatively analyze the dynamic and static viscoelastic properties of OGFC. Subsequently, the relaxation modulus of OGFC was deduced by the viscoelastic theory. Then, the dynamic modulus of OGFC was calculated according to the deduced relaxation modulus. Based on the calculated values and the measured values of dynamic modulus, the functional relationship of viscoelastic parameters of OGFC under dynamic and static loads was established. The results show that the increase in test temperature has adverse effects on the viscoelastic indexes of OGFC, such as creep compliance, relaxation modulus, and dynamic modulus; the dynamic modulus derived from static creep compliance has a good linear correlation with that obtained by dynamic modulus tests, but the correlation of the phase angle is poor.

Research on Improving the Durability of Bridge Pavement Using a High-Modulus Asphalt Mixture

In order to improve the durability of the asphalt pavement on a cement concrete bridge, this study investigated the effect of the modulus of the asphalt mixture at the bottom layer on the mechanical response of bridge pavement, along with a type of emerging bridge pavement structure. In addition, the design method and pavement performance of a high-modulus asphalt mixture were investigated using laboratory and field tests, and the life expectancy of the deck pavement structure was predicted based on the rutting deformation. The results showed that the application of a high-modulus asphalt mixture as the bottom asphalt layer decreased the stress level of the pavement structure. The new high-modulus asphalt mixture displayed excellent comprehensive performance, i.e., the dynamic stability reached 9632 times/mm and the fatigue life reached 1.65 million cycles. Based on the rutting depth prediction, using high-modulus mixtures for the bridge pavement prolonged the service life from the original 5 years to 10 years, which significantly enhanced the durability of the pavement structure. These research results could be of potential interest for practical applications in the construction industry.

Sensitivity of the Flow Number to Mix Factors of Hot-Mix Asphalt

In the design of pavement infrastructure, the flow number is used to determine the suitability of a hot-mix asphalt mixture (HMA) to resist permanent deformation when used in flexible pavement. This study investigates the sensitivity of the flow numbers to the mix factors of eleven categories of HMAs used in flexible pavements. A total of 105 specimens were studied for these eleven categories of HMAs. For each category of asphalt mixture, the variations in flow number for different contractors, binder types, effective binder contents, air voids, voids in mineral aggregates, voids filled with asphalt, and asphalt contents were assessed statistically. The results show that the flow numbers for different types of HMA used in Colorado vary from 47 to 2272. The same mix may have statistically different flow numbers, regardless of the contractor. The flow number increases with increasing effective binder content, air voids, voids in mineral aggregates, voids filled with asphalt, and asphalt content in the study range of these parameters.
