Principle Parameters and Environmental Impacts that Affect the Performance of Wind Turbine: An Overview

Optimal sizing and power losses reduction of photovoltaic systems using PSO and LCL filters

The integration of renewable energy systems into electricity grids is a solution for strengthening electricity distribution networks (SEDNs). Renewable energies such as solar photovoltaics are suitable for reinforcing a low-voltage line by offering an electrical energy storage system. However, the integration of photovoltaic systems can lead to problems of harmonic distortion due to the presence of direct current or non-linear feedback in networks from other sources. Therefore, connection standards exist to ensure the quality of the energy before injection at a point of common coupling (PCC). In this work, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to control a boost converter and to evaluate the power losses and the harmonic distortion rate. The test on the IEEE 14 bus standard makes it possible to determine the allocation or integration nodes for other sources such as biomass, wind or hydrogen generators, in order to limit the impact of harmonic disturbances (LIHs). The evaluation of the harmonic distortion rate, the power losses as well as the determination of the system size is done using an objective function defined based on the integration and optimization constraints of the system. The proposed model performs better since the grid current and voltage are stabilized in phase after the photovoltaic source is injected.

Development of a nano-size off-grid energy system using renewables and IoT technologies at the Meteoria visitor center: A Finnish case study

The increased utilization of non-renewable energy during the last century has influenced the climate, with increased carbon dioxide emissions and elevated temperature as a result. Thus, the need to develop and demonstrate new sustainable solutions regarding both energy supply and consumption, but also energy system optimization, is obvious. This case study presents the nano-size off-grid energy system at the Meteoria visitor center in Ostrobothnia, Finland, and the real-time measuring techniques that have been installed to follow up the energy production and consumption. The Meteoria consists of several buildings, which are open to the public from April to October. The case site is operated by energy derived from wind power, solar power, and a diesel generator (as a backup), with batteries for energy storage. The Internet of Things (IoT) has been retrofitted to the existing energy system to enable energy measurements and follow various electrical parameters in real-time. In addition, a graphical visualization platform open to the public has been developed. In this study, the completeness of data sampling and the IoT system was checked, and the results show high availability of data. Furthermore, various errors/limitations regarding the IoT system were identified. The energy supply/demand at the Meteoria in 2021 was monitored and the challenges regarding the existing energy system in a cold climate zone are discussed as well as the potential role of the Meteoria to function as a living lab.

Multiobjective Optimization of Composite Wind Turbine Blade

When designing a wind turbine, the main objective is to generate maximum effective power with the lowest possible production costs. The power of a wind turbine depends primarily on the aerodynamic properties of its blades. Moreover, the cost of making a blade for a wind turbine, and therefore also for the entire wind turbine, depends on the materials used for its production. Therefore, wind turbine blades are the most studied element of a wind turbine. By selecting the optimal material and geometric properties of the wind turbine blade, it is possible to reduce the costs of making the entire wind turbine. These rationales led the authors to investigate composite wind turbine blades. A two-criteria optimization task was formulated, which allowed for the simultaneous consideration of two criteria: minimizing the mass and minimizing the vertical deflection of the wind turbine blade. Geometric properties of the blade, influencing the considered criteria, were assumed as decision variables. The weighted sum method was used. The results obtained allowed us to determine the optimal geometric and material properties of a wind turbine blade.

Wind Characteristics and Wind Energy Potential in Andean Towns in Northern Peru between 2016 and 2020: A Case Study of the City of Chachapoyas

Currently, climate change and population growth have a significant impact on human beings. Furthermore, these factors are generating a great need for energy to sustain present-day pace of life. For this reason, this research aims to determine the wind potential of the city of Chachapoyas, through the study of wind direction and speed using a wind rose. Data were obtained from the Metrological Station located on the University Campus of the National University Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza (UNTRM) for developing this diagram. The mentioned station had 15% of missing data, therefore a quality control of the data and multiple imputations was carried out to fill in any missing data. The results obtained show that the winds in this area are mostly weak (from 0 to 3 m/s) with an East-Northeast (ENE) and Northeast (NE) direction for both the studied period and for each year of the period. It has also been determined that there is a difference between the wet and dry seasons in terms of wind frequency. Finally, we conclude that, in the city of Chachapoyas, it is possible to generate wind energy by using low-power vertical axis wind turbines.
