New reactions of betulin with sulfamic acid and ammonium sulfamate in the presence of solid catalysts

The molecular structure, vibrational spectra, solvation effect, non-covalent interactions investigations of psilocin

Psilocin, or 4-HO-DMT (or 3-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-1H-indol-4-ol), is a psychoactive alkaloid substance from the tryptamine family, isolated from Psilocybe mushrooms. This substance is being studied by various research groups because it has a clear therapeutic effect in certain dosages. In this work, the study of the structure and properties of psilocin was carried using theoretical methods: the effects of polar solvents (acetonitrile, dimethylsulfoxide, water, and tetrahydrofuran) on the structural parameters, spectroscopic properties (Raman, IR, and UV-Vis), frontier molecular orbital (FMO), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface, and nonlinear optical parameters (NLO). Theoretical calculations were performed at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level by the density functional theory (DFT) method. IEFPCM was used to account for solvent effects. The types and nature of non-covalent interactions (NCI) between psilocin and solvent molecules were determined using Atoms in Molecules (AIM), the reduced density gradient method (RDG), the electron localization function (ELF), and the localization orbital locator (LOL). Experimental and calculated FT-IR, FT-Raman, and UV-Vis spectra were compared and found to be in good agreement.

Synthesis and Cytotoxicity Evaluation of Betulin Cycloolefin Derivatives by Ruthenium-Catalyzed Ring-Closing Metathesis

The combination of ring-closing metathesis with betulin enables the design and synthesis of novel biomolecules representing a library of triterpenoid derivatives for potential pharmacological research. In this work, cyclic olefin betulin derivatives were attempted to be prepared by the combination of ring-closing metathesis with betulin. Dicyclohexyl carbodiimide coupling reaction allowed the transformation of betulin into two types of linear olefin derivatives that have different methylene spacer lengths between the olefin and ester groups. Subsequently, betulin-based cycloolefins were synthesized by ring-closing metathesis using Grubbs first-generation catalyst. The influence of different parameters including solvents, temperature, catalysts, and catalyst loading on ring-closing metathesis was investigated. Cytotoxicity results indicated that these betulin-based olefin derivatives, derived from renewable bioresources, have potential applications in the biomedical field.

Sulfation of Birch Wood Microcrystalline Cellulose with Sulfamic Acid Using Ion-Exchange Resins as Catalysts

Cellulose sulfates are important biologically active substances with a wide range of useful properties. The development of new methods for the production of cellulose sulfates is an urgent task. In this work, we investigated ion-exchange resins as catalysts for the sulfation of cellulose with sulfamic acid. It has been shown that water-insoluble sulfated reaction products are formed in high yield in the presence of anion exchangers, while water-soluble products are formed in the presence of cation exchangers. The most effective catalyst is Amberlite IR 120. According to gel permeation chromatography, it was shown that the samples sulfated in the presence of the catalysts KU-2-8, Purolit s390 plus, and AN-31 SO₄^2- underwent the greatest degradation. The molecular weight destribution profiles of these samples are noticeably shifted to the left towards low-molecular-weight compounds with an increase in fractions in the regions Mw ~2.100 g/mol and ~3.500 g/mol, indicating the growth of microcrystalline cellulose depolymerization products. The introduction of a sulfate group into the cellulose molecule is confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy by the appearance of absorption bands at 1245-1252 cm^-1 and 800-809 cm^-1, which correspond to the vibrations of the sulfate group. According to X-ray diffraction data, amorphization of the crystalline structure of cellulose is observed during sulfation. Thermal analysis has shown that with an increase in the content of sulfate groups in cellulose derivatives, thermal stability decreases.

Enhancing the Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 for the Degradation of Congo Red Dye by Adjusting the Ultrasonication Regime Applied in Its Synthesis Procedure

Recently, the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel synthesis procedure of mesoporous titania (TiO2) photocatalysts caught the researcher’s attention, due to the physicochemical properties enhancement of the resulting titania nanomaterials. Thus, by varying different synthesis parameters particular characteristics could be obtained. In the present study, the ultrasound pulse on/off ratio has been considered and the effect of the envisaged parameter on the textural, morphological, and optical features of titania nanomaterial has been investigated. Therefore, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2-sorption measurements, SEM imaging, and UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopy (UVDR) have been used. And further, the photocatalytic activity of the prepared TiO2 materials was evaluated by the features developed about the applied ultrasound pulse on/off ratio as 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, 1/3 and 2/2. It was found that the ultrasound pulse on/off ratio considered in the synthesis procedure of titania leads to TiO2 materials with different textural (SBET = 98–156 m2/g), morphological, and optical (Eg = 3.1–3.2 eV) characteristics. For this reason, TiO2 nanomaterials prepared were found to exhibit suitable features for photocatalytic applications. Thus, the TiO2 4.1 sample prepared at 4/1 ultrasound pulse on/off ratio revealed the highest photodegradation efficiency of Congo Red dye (98.28%) as the results of photocatalytic tests show. More than that, a possible reaction mechanism of the CR photodegradation process through the contribution of reactive oxygen species (·HO, ·O2−), holes (h+), and electrons (e−) of developed titania photocatalyst was proposed.

Effect of Formic Acid on the Outdiffusion of Ti Interstitials at TiO2 Surfaces: A DFT+U Investigation

Ti interstitials play a key role in the surface chemistry of TiO₂. However, because of their elusive behavior, proof of their participation in catalytic processes is difficult to obtain. Here, we used DFT+U calculations to investigate the interaction between formic acid (FA) and excess Ti atoms on the rutile-TiO₂(110) and anatase-TiO₂(101) surfaces. The excess Ti atoms favor FA dissociation, while decreasing the relative stability of the bidentate bridging coordination over the monodentate one. FA species interact significantly with the Ti interstitials, favoring their outdiffusion. Eventually, Ti atoms can emerge at the surface forming chelate species, which are more stable than monodentate FA species in the case of rutile, and are even energetically favored in the case of anatase. The presence of Ti adatoms that can directly participate to surface processes should then be considered when formic acid and possibly carboxylate-bearing species are adsorbed onto TiO₂ particles.

Design of γ-Alumina-Supported Phosphotungstic Acid-Palladium Bifunctional Catalyst for Catalytic Liquid-Phase Citral Hydrogenation

This study primarily addresses the development of dynamic, selective and economical metal–acid (bifunctional) catalysts for one-pot menthol production by citral hydrogenation. Specifically, various metals such as Pd, Pt, Ni, Cs and Sn were doped over alumina support. Additionally, bifunctional composite catalysts were also prepared with the impregnation of heteropoly acids and Pd precursors over alumina support. Analytical techniques (e.g., BET, PXRD, FT-IR, pyridine adsorption and amine titration methods) were applied for characterization of the most efficient and selective catalysts (e.g., Al2O3 and PTA-Cat-I). Similarly, most of the essential operational variables (e.g., loading rate of metal precursor, type of heteropoly acid, temperature, gas pressure and reaction time) were examined during this study. The experimental data shows that the bifunctional catalyst (PTA-Cat-I) produced 45% menthol at full citral substrate conversion (r = 0.038 mmoles.min−1) in liquid-phase citral hydrogenation (at optimized operating conditions: 70 °C, 0.5 MPa and 8 h). However, the heteropoly acid-supported bifunctional catalysts (e.g., PTA-Cat-I, PMA-Cat-I, SMA-Cat-I and STA-Cat-I) resulted in cracking and the dehydration of isopulegol/menthol by the generation of side products (e.g., 4-isopropyl-1-methyl, cyclohex-1-ane/ene); therefore, menthol yield was extensively diminished. On the other hand, non-acidic catalysts (e.g., Cat-I, Cat-II, Cat-III, Cat-IV and Cat-V) readily promoted hydrogenation reactions. The optimum menthol yield occurred due to the presence of strong Lewis and weak Bronsted acid sites. Mass transfer and reaction rate were substantially diminished due to acidity strength, heteropoly acid type and blockage of pores by the applied bifunctional catalysts.

Mango Seed-Derived Hybrid Composites and Sodium Alginate Beads for the Efficient Uptake of 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol from Simulated Wastewater

In this study, mango seed shell (MS)-based hybrid composite and composite beads (FeCl3-NaBH4/MS and Na-Alginate/MS) were designed. Batch and column experimental analyses were performed for the uptake of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) from wastewater. The physicochemical characteristics of both composites were also examined. From the batch adsorption experiments, the best adsorption capacities of 28.77 mg/g and 27.42 mg/g were observed in basic media (pH 9–10) at 308 K for FeCl3-NaBH4/MS and 333 K for Na-Alginate/MS with 25 mg/L of 2,4,6-TCP concentration for 120 min. The rate of reaction was satisfactorily followed by the pseudo-second-order kinetics. Equilibrium models revealed that the mechanism of reaction followed the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic study also indicated that the nature of the reaction was exothermic and spontaneous with both adsorbents. Desorption experiments were also carried out to investigate the reliability and reusability of the composites. Furthermore, the efficiency of the adsorbents was checked in the presence of different electrolytes and heavy metals. From the batch experimental study, the FeCl3-NaBH4/MS composite proved to be the best adsorbent for the removal of the 2,4,6-TCP pollutant, hence it is further selected for fixed-bed column experimentation. The column study data were analyzed using the BDST and Thomas models and the as-selected FeCl3-NaBH4/MS hybrid composites showed satisfactory results for the fixed-bed adsorption of the 2,4,6-TPC contaminants.

Ozone Formation during Photocatalytic Oxidation of Nitric Oxides under UV Irradiation with the Use of Commercial TiO2 Photocatalytic Powders

The application of photocatalytic materials has been intensively researched in recent decades. The process of nitric oxide (NO) oxidation during photocatalysis has been observed to result in the formation of nitric dioxide (NO₂). This is a significant factor of the photocatalysis process, as NO₂ is more toxic than NO. However, it has been reported that ozone (O₃) is also formed during the photocatalytic reaction. This study analyzed the formation and oxidationof O₃ during the photocatalytic oxidation of NO under ultraviolet irradiation using commercial photocatalytic powders: AEROXIDE^® TiO₂ P25 by Evonik, KRONOClean^® 7050 by KRONOS^®, and KRONOClean^® 7000 by KRONOS^®. An NO concentration of 100 ppb was assumed in laboratory tests based on the average nitric oxide concentrations recorded by the monitoring station in Warsaw. A mix flow-type reactor was applied in the study, and the appropriateness of its application was verified using a numerical model. The developed model assumed an empty reactor without a photocatalytic material, as well as a reactor with a photocatalytic material at its bottom to verify the gas flow in the chamber. The analysis of the air purification performance of photocatalytic powders indicated a significant reduction of NO and NO_x and typical NO₂ formation. However, no significant formation of O₃ was observed. This observation was verified by the oxidation of pure ozone in the process of photocatalysis. The results indicated the oxidation of ozone concentration during the photocatalytic reaction, but self-decomposition of a significant amount of the gas.

Hollow CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 Heterojunction Boost Photocatalytic Oxidation Activity for Organic Pollutants

P-n heterojunction-structured CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 hollow spheres with a diameter of 250 nm were synthesized using a template-free solvothermal method, and time-dependent morphological studies were carried out to investigate the hollow formation mechanism. The CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 with a molar ratio of 1:2 (Cu:Mg) had the highest degradation efficiency with the model organic dye Acid Orange 7, with a degradation rate of 91.96% over 60 min. The synthesized CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, Mott–Schottky, and EIS. Due to the synthesis of the p-n heterojunction, CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 has efficient photogenerated carriers, and the hollow structure has a higher specific surface area and stronger adsorption capacity, which is significantly better than that of CuFe2O4 and MgFe2O4 in terms of photocatalytic performance. The outstanding performance shows that the p-n heterostructure of CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 has potential for application in wastewater degradation.

Sulfation of Wheat Straw Soda Lignin with Sulfamic Acid over Solid Catalysts

Soda lignin is a by-product of the soda process for producing cellulose from grassy raw materials. Since a method for the industrial processing of lignin of this type is still lacking, several research teams have been working on solving this problem. We first propose a modification of soda lignin with sulfamic acid over solid catalysts. As solid catalysts for lignin sulfation, modified carbon catalysts (with acid sites) and titanium and aluminum oxides have been used. In the elemental analysis, it is shown that the maximum sulfur content (16.5 wt%) was obtained with the Sibunit-4® catalyst oxidized at 400 °C. The incorporation of a sulfate group has been proven by the elemental analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution has been examined by gel permeation chromatography. It has been demonstrated that the solid catalysts used in the sulfation process causes hydrolysis reactions and reduces the molecular weight and polydispersity index. It has been established by the thermal analysis that sulfated lignin is thermally stabile at temperatures of up to 200 °C. According to the atomic force microscopy data, the surface of the investigated film consists of particles with an average size of 50 nm. The characteristics of the initial and sulfated β-O-4 lignin model compounds have been calculated and recorded using the density functional theory.

Decomposition of Naphthalene by Dielectric Barrier Discharge in Conjunction with a Catalyst at Atmospheric Pressure

In this study, coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma, in conjunction with a metal oxide catalyst, was used to degrade naphthalene. The characteristics of plasma discharge were studied by measuring voltage and current waveforms and the Lissajous figure. The effects of different parameters of the process on naphthalene decomposition in air were investigated. XRD, BET, and SEM data were used to investigate the nature, specific surface area, and surface morphology of the catalyst. The results show that the mineralization of naphthalene reached 82.2% when the initial naphthalene concentration was 21 ppm and the total gas flow rate was 1 L/min in the DBD reactor filled with Al2O3. The mineralization of naphthalene first increased and then became stable with the increase in treatment time and discharge power. The TiO2 catalyst has more apparent advantages than the two other studied catalysts in terms of the removal efficiency and mineralization of naphthalene due to this catalyst’s large specific surface area, porous structure, and photocatalytic properties. In addition, the introduction of a small amount of water vapor can promote the mineralization and CO2 selectivity of naphthalene. With further increases in the water vapor, Fe2O3 has a negative effect on the naphthalene oxidation due to its small pore size. The TiO2 catalyst can overcome the adverse effects of water molecule attachment due to its photocatalytic properties.
